As a music arranger I was commissioned to write an oveture for a theatre show which was a medley of film themes. It was a dream job! I obviously included this theme but also these question and answer trumpet cadenzas. Fortunately the 3 trumpets in the orchestra were good enough to do it justice. It is a true piece of virtuosity. A friend of mine, a professional trumpeter, did tell me who played this on the original recording. I'm about to chase him up and find out again as shamefully I've forgotten.

Eli Wallach did a fantastic job in that movie, absolutely fantastic. Eli Wallach was one of our best actors, no doubt about that. His delivery of the "shoot" dialogue you mention says much more than those words. The way Eli delivered that line echoed a philosophy America hadn't (and hasn't) had since WW II.
