This video was far more interesting than I was prepared for. These look like Pink Salmon? I hold Salmon Sacred in my life. They must be treated with respect, because if they ever disappear it will be the end of us. Seining has always been a mystery to me. I watched from a distance but never got the gist of it. Tristan!!! You can move when you have to!!! Holy smokes my man! You knew what had to be done, why and when! You are amazing! Your Mom is no less incredible, you two work well together, I have not had the opportunity to see that. Len when chaos appeared to be running the show, you stepped out and brought calm and encouragement, all Matt needed was a Lariat and a six gun! 😁 I really appreciate you giving an insight to this method of harvesting fish. I do not feel quite as negative about it as I did. I'm still not sure Salmon should be so heavily used but so far some runs are okay. Coho (silvers?) And Springs (Kings?) Seem to be the worst abused species. That is why I don't like Guide Boats, for them it is all about masculinity and Male Pattern Baldness! In other words "I may not be much of a man, but with a few thousand dollars I can compensate. That is why I do not fish salmon in freshwater. They do not eat and they have strength for one spawning run. Anyway I digress. This video helped me see better

What is the long pole that you hit the water with prior to pulling in salmon net?
@EISAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip. It is called a plunger. The noise and bubbles that are forced into the water help push the fish back into the net so they don't swim out past the end.
@lonnielengkeek72 жыл бұрын
Are the fish supposed to go through the block up there when they're in the net
@EISAlaska2 жыл бұрын
Nope, not typically. It couldn't be helped in this case, they were late season fish at a hatchery opener, so they had what are called "hook jaws" which salmon develop late into their life cycle. As it implies the salmon have gnarly jaws and teeth that snag up on the web and get dragged up into the block.
@Tinyshooterbill4 жыл бұрын
What is the purpose of the plunger in the water while you are pulling in the nets?

The noise and bubbles spook the fish and keep them from running out the net. The skiffman also plunges when the net is held open.

so, are the fish that go throuh the block like they did still viable or does it mash em up and make them wasted?
@EISAlaska5 ай бұрын
The reality for this flare opener was all that fish was past it's expiration date. They took to long getting the brood stock and doing cost recovery and by the time they opened the hatchery the fish we beyond marketable. It is primarily a roe fishery at that point anyways. We still got paid and it was a sweet little bonus for us.

@allenschwinn96994 жыл бұрын
What's the purpose of the cup on the pole?
@EISAlaska4 жыл бұрын
It's called a plunger. As you force it into the water it makes a popping noise and also pushes air bubbles into the water. The fish see and hear it turn around and swim back into the net.
@allenschwinn96994 жыл бұрын
@@EISAlaska you were using it to force the fish to another part of the net. Gotcha. Thanks for responding. Love your channel.

So are these going for filets like you see in a super market? Or are they going to be processed and turned into fake crab\animal food?
@EISAlaska4 жыл бұрын
Hey Patty. These would go to fillet markets if they were harvested earlier. By the time this area was opened the fish were in poor shape. Most likely the majority ended up at the fish meal plant. The roe is used also if it is still good.

Good catch and I enjoyed watching your videos. I hope to see how this fishnet works in the bottom and how it trapped the fish? When this pandemic is done, I would like to go back to Philippines and apply your long line fishing for halibut but of smaller version. I have noticed different style of long line fishing in the Phils. and it's so frustrating especially they do it manually and so messy. Thanks for video and I subscribed and keep watching it.
@somruppun4 жыл бұрын
I think I figured it out after watching your seining videos how the fish is being trapped except the process how to gather those bottom rings and was placed on a big steel hook being lifted separately on the side of the boat.
