Simply the greatest scene ever filmed in cinema history. This is one of those moments that could only be captured by the medium of film. You couldn't build this tension in a book or other storytelling method, it HAD to be shot on camera and presented this way for the scene to convey every emotion, every minute detail. The music, the wide shots, the closeups, everything comes together to create this binding moment that summarizes what the entire movie is trying to say. It's this moment that captures the full scope of the importance of film and the significance of the way it can be utilized to tell stories like no other medium can. That's why this is the greatest scene ever filmed, because it shows that cinema can do something that no other storytelling method can.
@festenzurius74542 жыл бұрын

Ever read a page turning book? I get what you said. This scene is awesome. However, reading a book is just as tense, and sometimes you have to put the book down, take a breath, pause.. Movies don’t allow that.. But as far as scenes go, you are spot on.
@grumpysorc37442 жыл бұрын
I agree that in such scenes cinema shows its uniqueness, but the words "greatest ever" devalue art. It's not a Guinness book. Don't get me wrong, I adore that standoff, its tension, eyes & hands close-up, everything you listed above, but there are many great movie scenes we can't compare with each other because of the different genres, meanings and emotions. I don't know... from Seven Samurai's flag hoisting to Barry Lyndon's card game seduction, from Potemkin's Odessa steps to Pulp Fiction's dance. Too different to compare.

Blondie always knew he couldn't work with Angel Eyes, or dare turn his back on him. Tuco, he could outwit. fun fact: Leone couldn’t get a prop skeleton to look the way he wanted it to look on film. He said he wish they could get a real skeleton, so set decorator Carlo Leva found out that a lady in Madrid had a real skeleton for hire. It was her mother's (who in life had been an actress) skeleton and before she died, she expressed the wish that her skeleton should be used in movies, so that her acting career could continue after death. I have watched this showdown so many times over the years that I think I've figured out the story even in between the stare-downs. Exactly at 6:54 Blondie looks over to Tuco and wittingly strikes a little 'smile' and a nod as if trying to reassure Tuco that he'll not shoot him, or in the least he's trying to convey that he's on Tuco's side. Angel Eyes notices this interaction and looks over to Tuco and back towards Blondie in suspicion. Tuco on the other hand, before Blondie struck that smile/nod at him even he looked tensed up trying to figure out who to shoot at (Angel Eyes or Blondie). But after Blondie gives that sign, you'll notice Tuco's expression suddenly changes from tensed to somewhat more comfortable and he seems more focused on Angel Eyes. Now Angel Eyes is still suspicious but not entirely sure if Blondie and Tuco have silently joined forces so he's becoming more tensed and constantly looking at both Blondie and Tuco. Now at 7:22 Angel Eyes takes one final good look at Tuco and that's when Tuco gives away the ruse. Tuco's eyes fixate on him and his eyebrows loosen upwards almost as if to say "Yeahhh you are toast now old friend!!". This is where Angel Eyes realizes he's marked for death and loses his cool entirely. That's why he goes to fire first knowing that the only chance he has at living is if he shoots first. The rest is... history.

There is more to it than that: At the beginning of the scene Angel Eyes gets the jump on Tuco and Blondie. Blondie needs to get the upper hand once again so he manipulates them all into a situation where he has all the advantage. He comes up with what seems like a fair game where the winner of this standoff gets the money. However, he is the only one who knows the location of the money and he can't be trusted to have written it down on the rock (which he never did). Therefore, Tuco and Angel Eyes can't risk shooting him and he knows it. Further than that, Blondie emptied Tuco's pistol and knows he's not a threat. Blondie is safe from harm and only needs to shoot Angel Eyes (who can only shoot Tuco) in order to be the only man left with a loaded gun, as opposed to someone who digs. Like you said, Tuco and Angel Eyes are staring back and forth, trying to figure out a way to win but from Blondie's perspective the game was rigged from the start.

I can’t even begin to describe the feelings I get when Angel Eyes throws the shovel and his theme plays at 00:59, followed by the looks they give him immediately afterwards! It’s pure cinematic magic and beauty at work! I love this movie!

This will always be one of the greatest scenes in film, in my opinion. The amount of information that's being conveyed without a single word, and with almost no movement, is amazing.

thats actually something i never really think about, ofcourse the music and cinematography is perfect but I never tend to think about the lack of dialogue
@smoldragon339 Жыл бұрын
@@wooarc And that's the brilliance of it. So much of the characters' thoughts are being communicated to each other (and the audience) through small eye movements and slight hand movements that you don't even notice that there's been no dialogue for several minutes.

depite being a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, for me the best actor was Eli Wallach (Tuco). he really stole the show, without him, the movie wouldn't have been the same.

What I love about films with such attention to detail is that you always notice something new when rewatching. It took me quite some to really see how great the characters' mindgames are. Blondie is the only one that knows that Tuco's gun is empty. Tuco is the only one paying equal attention to both duelists as he doesn't trust either. He readies for a shot, but Angel Eyes sees him and this scares Tuco since he doesn't know whom to shoot first. Angel Eyes considers Blondie the biggest threat, so he readies to shoot him first while keeping Tuco in check, but Blondie looks at him and he brings his hand back. Wanting to catch him by surprise, he shifts his eyes to Tuco. Realising that Angel is just waiting for an opening and isn't actually aiming for Tuco, Blondie feings interest in Tuco. He looks at him intensely and eventually Tuco fixes his eyes on Blondie as he is tricked into expecting his betrayal. The two stare at each other while Angel's attention is divided between Tuco and Blondie. He tries again to shoot Blondie while he's not looking his way, but Tuco grows more and more scared until he finally averts his gaze. Thinking that Tuco unexpectedly switched target and is going to shoot, Angel panics and draws. Tuco, who was already watching Angel, reacts immediately. As soon as he does, Blondie shoots. He didn't even need to avert his eyes from Tuco to hit. Because the whole time he was the only one who knew whom to shoot. And of course he used Tuco to his advantage like he always had.

This is a textbook example of a piece of writing advice Quinten Tarantino gave, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is where he learned it. You treat tension like a rubber band, and stretch it as far as humanly possible before it snaps. It's also an example of a philosophy of Sergio Leone, he believed the lead up to action is more interesting than the action itself.
