Welcome to the CL Pet Ads where we will evaluate care shown in these ads and discuss with you the good and bad pet husbandry. We will bring up valuable points, what works for the pet, mention what could be improved and discuss a species needs. The focus in these videos will be about educating to encourage the viewer on learning more about the pet and to showcase #ThinkAdoptionFirst. Not everyone will bring their small companion to a shelter or rescue. Many choose to list still on Craigslist. There are hardly any rescues or foster homes for small pets like hamsters, so maybe you'd like to help out your small pet community after seeing this video? Who knows, maybe you'll make a different in the lives of pets and people.

Let's teach our kids responsibility by not informing ourselves about the pet we're getting, locking it up in a tiny cage without any enrichment and throwing it away the second it stops being entertaining. Sounds like a great idea!

@@jettheottb Rats are the sweetest little guys, I'm sure you have a great time with your fluffy new friends. Thank you for bringing up the topic of hairless hamsters! SO many people just don't know how much this genetic thing affects the poor hamster's life - females cannot lactate, they're prone to eye and skin problems, they struggle to regulate their own temperature, they require special care, and much more. The list of medical problems they come with is bigger than they are. Someone posted a picture of their rescue hairless hamster (poor thing was abandoned outside a pet shop) on a FB group I'm in, and at least 80 to 90% of comments were asking where they could get one. Tried my best to educate those who asked, but it gets tiring. Also, fun fact: live feeding vertibrate animals (animals with backbones) is illegal in the UK (only exception being if you have exhausted all other options and the animal still won't eat), as it causes tremendous stress to the animal being killed and may cause injury to the animal being fed. Kinda wish it was illegal everywhere, but hey ho.
@indigoeye3874
@indigoeye3874 3 жыл бұрын
In my country, live feeding is not allowed with the exception of some species of snakes that would sooner starve than eat a dead animal. However, even though it is a law, it is pretty much impossible to reinforce, because there is never any evidence (how do you know someone is killing the feeder animal before serving it when they are at home? and how do you prove it?). And there will unfortunately always be people who think of it as fun to watch a live mouse get toyed with by their pet.
@SerpentHermet
@SerpentHermet 3 жыл бұрын
I prefer not to feed my snake live rats. I believe this option should only be reserved for animals whom will accept nothing else. I only had to feed my ball python live once and then she would take thawed rats. Sometimes it's a necessary evil that must be done...

I’ve rescued 3 hamsters now from Craigslist and to see these babies burrow for the first time, drink freely from a bowl, carry a chew toy around… there’s nothing like it! It’s so satisfying to rescue a hamster from a bad situation and give them the best. You see a change in them immediately. Definitely worth it.

My family always had animals and I think my mother did what any parent should do if your kids want pets: She was the actual caretaker (and of course she loved them too). For example my budgie Billy was mine in name only and Willy my sisters. We loved them and because they were "ours" we felt responsible for them and took care of them to some extent, but my mother was the actual caretaker. We would feed them, play with them and sometimes even clean the cage (we were still very young, so most of the time my mother would do it), but we didn't HAVE to clean. It didn't feel like a chore and we never got "bored" of them, because we were never forced to take care of them, we did what we could and that was okay. We basically were taught that it's fun to take care of animals. I think that was the right way to do it. It was a very positive experience and the older we got the more responsibilty we could shoulder and we would do it willingly, we were even eager to do so.

the first hamsters we rescued were a couple of little dwarf hamsters, one winter white and a hybrid. the story we were told was that they were bought for two young boys, who soon tired of their pets, and eventually the mother got fed up of looking after them so she surrendered them. we think they were about a year old and they came to us in pitiful cages with little space or enrichment. they were really shy but warmed up to us soon, and became lovely friendly creatures. the hybrid had a tumor but they thankfully both lived well over a year with us. I miss them.

As a betta mom, the betta in the second ad absolutely broke my heart. It really does make a huge difference. I will admit, my very first betta fish (when I was a kid) was one of those in a vase. Then when I got interested again as an adult I thought 1 gallon was fine. But then I really immersed myself in researching them and have noticed such a huge change in the behavior of the bettas I've kept since implementing a 5 gallon bare minimum rule. Right now Bamba is in a 9 gallon and Sardonyx is in a 10. They both have sand substrate and live plants and are so much happier than bettas I've had in the past. I hope that betta went to somebody who knew what they were doing.

My girlfriend and I adopted pet rats this February, so our fluff balls are technically quarantine pets, but we still did a lot of research ( for about two months total) about food, hides, toys, etc before we eventually got them. And that information was not hard to find. A quick Google or KZbin search shows so many great places of information. We did go a bit overboard with our DIY cage in the end, but honestly our rats love it so it was worth it. I don't understand how people can just go buy an animal at whim and then not even provide them with any proper care. I'm glad that people like Munchie are doing doing things like this so hamsters and other small animals can get the care they deserve.

As someone who works at a certain well known petstore, I get to sell hamsters into these situations every single day. Blows my mind that when I say that they are nocturnal, that welfare organization recommend this size cage, and actually detail the minimum care, most people completely ignore me and get the tiny tales cage for their Syrian. "That's how we kept my hamster when I was a kid" is the normal responce. Really the only time I can deny the sale is if they openly admit to feeding them to a snake. I can actually deny the sale of a fish easier than the sale of a hamster.

The black hamster looks like Mr. Bellows my blackbear hamster I got at petsmart. I remember he had a multi color 3 story cage about 30inches tall he would run on his wheel and go to floor to floor. he would run around the bathroom to play with me freely for extra exercise ( with doors closed that is) . This was back in the early 2000's he lived a good 3 years and I do miss him a lot

Because of you and Victoria, I am making sure that in the future that I am adopting from rescues and seeing if I can potentially rescue a hamster that was in a bad home and give it a good home with me. I am actually working on a custom enclosure with my brother that will be approximately 2,200 square inches, and I cannot wait until it is complete! Thank you for all that you do!

I get so frustrated when people come to me with wounded hamsters and when I tell them to separate they wont. "but theyve been together X months", "the pet store said they would be lonely" ect. I know theres a lot of opinions on care, and someone being asked for advice wont always know all the details, but when its so clear and so important... People trust me enough to expect me to have the answer, then when its inconvenient they trust the pet store employee more. This is why I became a paleontologist and not a vet.

I took in my current hamster from someone whose children lost interest and he tried to take care but knew that the hamster needed more company and enrichment which he couldn't commit to. I have had him for about six months and he's lovely. I could tell the guy meant well based on the setup and from talking with him about the hamster and the temperament etc but he wasn't informed enough. I adore the little fella and we have bonded a lot and although they are only with us for a short time they teach us something new and they stay in our hearts. I adore keeping small animals and I want to one day keep mice but I need more time for research and a vastly different setup.

Snakes need to eat too, period. But the thing which saddens me is that the animals being raised for food are being treated like objects, not living beings. Like rats and other small rodents being kept in horrible living conditions without even a chew toy. I hope the standards for feeding animals will change someday and the people breeding them grow a heart u.u

I recently went to a Petsmart that was 30mins away to just look at some hamsters since I’m already housing two in my different bin cages and I have an apartment. The employee told me they lost a hamster for a month within the store and are putting it for normal sale tomorrow. I told them I would easily take it off their hands since the hamster could be injured or have breathing issues due to dust. They wouldn’t budge with me and told me to come in tomorrow for his release. It’s so sad to think that these hamsters could be hurt and just given to some family that doesn’t have the knowledge or capability of helping them. I’m so disappointed in what was said to me and what I saw for equipment. I just thought I would share this story since it really touched me and I haven’t been able to forget about that little guy.

All our hamsters are adopted and their situations have been infuriatingly bad, even tho all ex-owners looked carrying and concerned. Just....so ignorant. Our late boy was the most antisocial hamster I've seen, so scared and all but seeing him slowly trusting us and becoming more outgoing was the most rewarding thing ever. I tried so hard to not get attached because he was all the opposite of the hamster I wanted and he was already almost an year old so I knew we don't have much time together but oh my gosh he crowed into my heart and made his home there. He was the most gorgeous lovely little thing and I don't regret for a moment all the hardship we went through. Adopting is so rewarding but there are so so many and I can't take them all :/

Snake keeper here! The individuals represented in this video are the lowest of the low in our hobby. No responsible animal keeper sources hamsters as feeders because it is impossible to ethically and economically. Those of us who cared to research feeders for our snakes choose to use rats and or mice from fully domesticated feeder lines. They have the psychology to be able to thrive in their common economic bin racks.

Everything I've learned is as long as the bin cage is over 450 square inches it's a good enclosure. They don't even sell bigger than 120 qt that are clear everywhere. I feel like that first ad could have added much more bedding but I feel like that person did a really good job with that bin. I know, the bigger the better and the deeper the better but I promise you, I've been to EVERY store in a 30 mile radius that sells storage bins and the clear ones do not come that big here. Bin cages are meant to be cheaper options too.

This happens in the UK also, sometimes animals are offered for sale o these sites from so called breeders and not kept in good conditions. I adopt hamsters and provide the appropriate cage size set out by the RSPCA. One of my adoptions this year was two females Russian dwarfs brought back to the store as children had lost interest. They were kept in a tiny space with one very small wheel. One was blocking food from the other. I separated them as it was clear they were not getting on together I think if I hadn't adopted them when I did the smallest one may have died. It took a month for the smallest to gain the appropriate weight. I felt the pet store had not been monitoring them and caring for them appropriately.

"There are flea markets in Asia..." Unfortunately, I've seen that exact same thing at some American flea markets as well. Some of the regulations on small animal care and sales are very very lax and what they can get away with in the sense of animal cruelty is horrible, especially since there's very little way to track them if they do things like pay in cash. They just move onto another flea market if they get blacklisted. Just so you know, it's not just 'another country''s problem.

Pet stores need to stop hiring children that have ZERO experience in animals. They really should require a certification of some sort in basic animal care in order to work at these places. I have tried telling people that they should do better where cages, diets and care are concerned and like you, I get the "You don't know how I take care of my animals" and so on. I really advocate for people to adopt from a rescue or ethical breeder and that pet stores source their animals from rodent mills usually which is why they have issues a lot of the time. Those tiny cages and stuff need to be banned. I don't understand how anyone can think they are good or okay to place an animal in. It would be like someone trying to stick a human in a fish bowl.
