Ah yes - back in me teen years. the 1950s, THIS was alternaate comedy! Seriously, it was rebellious in that it treated Authority as idiotic - which it mostly was, of course... and how we loved it.

It's great to see pictures including Michael Bentine. I think here was there for the first two series. I don't think there are any recordings of him in any episodes but there is cine footage of him as a Goon recording a radio show.

Too bad we can't get original comedy like this any more... but thankfully we have a lot of recordings of the Goons to enjoy over and over again.

Glenn Johnson Sheer goonish Heaven.I do all the voices of the Goons.Sad,really but there is an ulterior motive.I hope to produce my own Goon show using multi-tracking.It`s been a lifelong dream to do this now i have the technology plus the use of a steam driven recording unit.I experimented by connecting it to the kettle lead,feeding the audio output leads into the gas oven using electric jump leads.For safety reasons,i wore a plastic mack and a tin helmet.Worked a treat.Only trouble,no roof on the kitchen!!!You rotten swine! What makes you think i am a fan?Million thanks for all these wonderful,zany uploads,Al.

I say, you there, yes you sir, have you no shame? These wonder ear films are already illustrated in magnificent military detail in the imaginations of all who hear them and we don't need any schoolboy doodler or boy scout crayonner making postcard pictures, you filthy swine! Er, just a minute ... what's that y'say ... ah ... aeioughhhh ... I beg your pardon madam, it's these army surplus spectacles, y'know ... I mean no disrespect ... have compassion on an old soldier ... you wouldn't hit a nursing mother, would you?

We keep seeing a fourth Goon, and even a fifth. Who were these forgotten Goons?
@OldiesAl3 жыл бұрын
The fourth Goon was Michael Bentine who was only a member for the first 38 shows, the others in the photos are Prince Charles and in the photo with 5 people the 5th is actor Ian Carmichael.

Mike Hunt You're welcome. My guess has since been confirmed as right (save a plural) by: 1. www.thegoonshow.net/songs/bluebottle_blues.asp 2. A comment further down this page which I honestly didn't even notice was here.

Heh, a forerunner of Green Eggs and Ham? I do not like them Sam I Am. Used to love the Goon shows, but because I didn't start listening to them until the 1970s I missed the references to the current affairs of the time or the parodies of films etc.

what is the actual origin for the slang term bluebottler for police. Is there actually a cockney rhyme? or is it only based on the peter sellers character? Just wondering. British slang is often quite baffling to us Yanks. so please enlighten me. I searched all over the internet for origins and only came up with the goon show, which I never heard of until today.
@OldiesAl2 жыл бұрын
It is thought to have derived from Cockney rhyming slang bottle and glass for arse, so calling someone an arse, adding blue to determine the police uniform. The Goons (Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and for the first 2 series Michael Bentine) were a huge radio then tv series in the UK in the 50's, a forerunner for many of the comedy acts to follow including the Monty Python team
@yeet__2 жыл бұрын
@@OldiesAl could you please share the rhyme in its entirety? still a bit baffled. and do you know any british idiom relating to sports, derived from a player of football I believe, about hanging a shirt inside out on a clothesline? I heard someone mention it in an interview once and forgot to write it down. I am trying to collect some slang from the uk and elsewhere. Like setting a cat among the pigeons is from colonial days in India I've just read.
@OldiesAl2 жыл бұрын
@@yeet__ Bottle and glass is rhyming slang for arse as with many long phrases it's often shortened to bottle 'he's a bottle' derogatory for 'he's an arse'. Police have many derogatory nicknames fuzz, pigs, plod, filth, old Bill, so bluebottle denoting the blue uniform and an arse is fitting.
