Steve Wynn: In 1984, I was working computer support for a manufacturer of the computer used by the Golden Nugget, managed (owned?) by Steve Wynn. I was in the poker room being shown the app their programmers wrote for pit boss use. Steve Wynn came out of the door to the offices and walked across the room to greet three men. Those men were big, dressed in obviously expensive but not typical business suits. They had pock marked faces, slicked back dark hair, and I looked at their hands, sure enough, pinky rings. Wynn greeted them with hugs and cheek kisses. I saw hundreds of businessmen greet each other in my career, but this was different. If you called central casting and asked them to send you three mobsters, it would look like those guys. I would give long odds what I saw was Wynn meeting mob associates.

We spend so much time trying to figure out if political figures are true believers or just pandering, but the effect is the same either way. Whether Trump is truly a racist or merely “playing one on TV”, he says and does things that encourage white supremacy (not to mention misogyny, Islamophobia, etc.). We can never tell for sure what’s in someone else’s heart (although privately I have an opinion), so let’s just quit speculating about it and focus on the effect.

I think an email to my red state representative and senators is necessary a couple times a year, even if only their mail reader reads it. I really don’t want them to think everyone in the state believes the poo that they do. I know my senators won’t stand up to trump if the country needs them to.
