The Government Told Us To Come Here // Rockhounding Utah

This was an interesting location to visit for a number of reasons, you can find some quality chalcedony, the cinder cone is interesting to look at and maybe collect some cinders from and if you're into micro minerals, there appears to be some of those as well however I will need to go back to investigate those future.
Overall, this was a fantastic location to visit on a cool summer morning!

@@CurrentlyRockhounding Welcome to the south! I die in my workshop this time of year in se Texas. What has helped is getting a fan with a reservoir for water and ice. They are pretty inexpensive and make a huge difference.

This was a textbook perfect example of real life rockhounding in a new area; I quite enjoyed it. Get excited to explore a new area, maybe feel a little lost and partially disappointed because of what you aren't seeing much of, then find a couple things that bring hope, excitement, and energy to hike once again, find some fun things, and then feel satisfied overall that you made the trip and learned some new things. That journey to some like myself are what we rock nerds live for, lol. Great video; I hope you head back and crack into some new cool stuff! Take care

Welcome to the Rockies Region. Will definitely have different rockhounding experiences. Please remember waterways are different out here. A downpour from a thunderstorm miles away can soon turn a stream or wash into a torrent so always have a way to get out fast.

It’s been interesting watching you guys for a few years now. I think Sarah was a lot more camera shy in the earlier videos. It’s nice that you both have mics now. I never thought that you didn’t let her talk… she seems to be more introverted than you are and isn’t as chatty on camera. While we miss you in the PNW, it’s fun watching you explore new areas. There’s so much in southern Utah and the rocks there are older than in the PNW.

The dual wireless mics really helps a lot. I don't think Sara was ever camera shy, it was just difficult to record two people in the field without nice equipment. We will surely come back to the PNW in the future, albeit likely to be Oregon.

It's never a bad day when you have such a beautiful area to explore. Definitely an area to return to. Utah is an interesting state, have been there many times, my brother is there, although he is not the reason I like Utah. I do believe you two will enjoy it. You both have a calm approach to rockhounding, relaxing nothing in your face, if that makes any sense, plus you guys compliment each other. You're right next door to Arizona, which offers so much in rockhounding, personal opinion. Thanks enjoyed the video.

I’ve been to that location. Instead of going to the creek- if you continue up the hill on the paved road- it’s literally everywhere. I’ve pulled off the road and searched the hillside within 50 yards of the road and filled buckets. Beautiful colored agates. Hopefully you can go back and explore more!

Looks like you guys got a new camera, the footage looks amazing! Beautiful quality. One thing I’d suggest is putting the camera in point focus or center focus mode for the workshop shots so it doesn’t try and focus on rocks on the border as much. Or you could shoot manual focus. If you try some of the access roads south of there you will find some gorgeous agate / jasper shortly after crossing into the tree line. A few years ago I found a massive boulder of blue agate in the field before there. It was too big to dig that day so buried. Unfortunately I never went back to dig it up.

Our family actually took a little roadtrip to that exact location this spring and with young kids with us, it was the perfect spot to explore. We didn’t go any further up than where that piece of wood was and we found all kinds of fun stuff. My husband even found a piece of purple chalcedony that was actually pretty solid. I think what people look for in that area are the red, white, and blue agates and it looks like you found a couple of them. Nice!

Oh and I was also going to mention that the water level was about the same when we went which was end of March/first part of April. Maybe it gets flash floods there that makes the banks so high.

If you haven't used the usgs interactive map, I would highly recommend playing around with it. I think you would *really* enjoy playing with it, and looking at the different layers & what can be found in any particular area you point at. There is a ton of information that can be gleamed from just pointing & clicking at a random location on the map. It lists the stratigraphy, what formation is showing on the surface, what types of rocks you're most likely to find, etc. It's a little like Google maps, but for geologists and Rockhounds. I can send you a link to the interactive map portal if you have any trouble finding it. Happy hounding!

We have a hawk nesting in a tree, a tall tree in my neighbors yard, and when I’m out in my yard, it likes to swoop to scare me away, I didn’t realize there was a nest in the tree till my neighbor had mentioned it the other day

The stone Sarah is trying to get in focus at about 25:25 looks like what we call Cosmo agate because of the orbs. It's also semi translucent when cit thin. Purple agate has been found near the Cinder Hill.

Check out the stream and trail at Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery. Drop dead scenery and lots of pretty agates which are easy to spot in the water since most is blood red

You may have come across it, but the Utah rockhounding 3.0 map is a good resource with plenty of locations on it. You’ll want to cross check the locations though to make sure you aren’t on a claim or private property, but overall, it’s a good resource. The grasshoppers have been terrible this year, especially in the west desert where I live. Also, yes, we had a good snowfall this year, is there still snow on Brian Head?

I'm from Minnesota and I say looking for agates because our agates are nodules and pieces. If I were hunting for seam agate I think I would just say looking for agate. I never thought about this until now, that's weird😂

What you are finding in Utah is interesting, but it is kind of boring. Still, I had no idea that Washington had so much that you have exposed me to, and I lived there my entire life until four years ago. Arizona probably has a lot to offer. I am in NM now and am shocked at what I find here. I am guessing that Utah actually has a lot.

I would say Jared is quickly learning that Utah has a lot of junky, massive agate that is very widespread. I have found that my much better specimens by avoiding the known spots. Instead, I focus on finding similar layers nearby and walking washes. I have mostly hounded the San Rafael Swell, Hanksville, and Yellow Cat regions. I wouldn't be able to recommend anything in Jared's area since I am unfamiliar. I did the hike to the Wolverine Petrified Forest 2 weeks ago and loved that. I think it is fun watching Jared and Sara explore the area not knowing what to expect. I'm sure they will sniff out the honey holes in time.

@@Rockhound_Yeti I am quickly learning that large areas of southern Utah have agate and chalcedony all over which but most of it is not worth taking. That said, we did find a few nice things from this location which makes me happy. We went from living somewhere that I had intensively studied for years and knew like the back of my hand to an all-new place that is very different and there is a learning curve to that which is on display here, after all this is a reality channel that doesn't manufacture hype content or play it up for the camera and sometimes that means not finding the best things in the known universe.
