Welcome back to Reserved Investments! In this video, let's discuss the ongoing carnage occurring in the graded video game market. The recent results from Heritage Auction's November 2022 Video Game Signature Auction are upon us. Unfortunately for speculators playing in this market, prices are still falling...when will it end?

Anyone that been collecting video games 10+ Years, and not doing it as a investment, but as passion for the hobby. To play, keep, and preserve in GOOD condition. I hope Anyone going into buying Video Games, as way of Investing like a Stock Market. Hope they all go Bankrupt. I also feel same way about Resellers. I am okay with "FINDERs Fee" but not when its buy every copy in store, because this game you can flip/charge on ebay x2.

Somebody recently bought the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo switch first print for $10,000 at Heritage auctions but it was a 10.0. The true first print for The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild on the Wii U hasn't sold for $10,000 that I can recall. People are overpaying for these graded video games and it's insane!

When you have comic book and sport card collectors come into the market and try to apply the same rules to video games, it is not going to work. Pokemon, Zelda, Mario are some of the most printed games for any console and there is old collectors who still have sealed cases of 6 sitting around and jumped on the opportunity to unload them on the market. Now the market is saturated with those titles on every selling platform including Heritage.

People keep saying the collectibles market is crashing. I keep saying it's not crashing, it was just a massive market correction that happened. The inflated prices caused by the pandemic could not be sustained and would inevitably come back down. So the prices came back to "normal." However, I agree with them one thing, the graded games market has definitely crashed. It sucks to laugh at it, but the sales manipulation was so obvious that it's hard to feel bad for the people that are, in a manner of speaking, stuck with some of these games. Prices should increase in the future for these, but at a slow moderate pace like a true collectible should...

I personally appreciate when you add some emotion to your videos because it adds personality and shows that you're serious about a topic. I know some people in my college that have lost a lot of money in the collectibles trade with graded video games, and specifically marvel trading cards. When they really should be saving up to pay off debt and won't admit to themselves they have lost and end up never selling the item. And it hurts to see that loss of trust from a trade that I really do love.

This is a bit off topic but it's crazy how the "Investing" culture is in my college. If you talk about investing, even with the finance and business majors, all they talk about is how great crypto, nfts, trading cards, gold, and other collectibles are the greatest investment ever. And you mention the stock market or real estate and they all laugh saying "That investment is too slow". It's crazy lol

@@humblecartoons3483 Just goes to show, that teaching common sense ist the most important .... and the hardest to do. Crypto is a complete hogwash. When the times get tough, speculative play money is the last thing on people's priority list. So in times like now and the foreseeable future, these markets will keep bleeding liquidity. Because speculation is a past time, that people have neither the money nor the inclination for, when the essentials are uncertian. We see it in crypto, we see it in collectibles. A finance and business major seems not to be worth much these days if basic stuff like that doesn't register.

The video games market isn’t crashing. It’s merely reverting back to its pre-pandemic market state and that the trends are implying there was a high probability of market manipulation shenanigans during the WATA/HA associations. Also the WATA trends are not correlational to video game collecting in general, and they are certainly not reflective of the Pal/European markets.

Even the prices after the fall are pretty ridiculous. If you told people you paid $15,000 for a $50 game because it was in brand new packaging, they’d put you away. I also get a little nervous when a 66 CC dollar is worth 4-6x a 64 CC dollar. It’s pretty hard to call them “rare” when you can buy one any time you want. I wonder then, is this investing or feeding the ego by having the highest grade? What’s better for my children, having six of them or having the one? Yet the one 66 will usually outperform an equal dollar investment in a lower grade of mint state.

Uhh…as someone educated in finance, the Fed is quite necessary. Usually people who tend to disagree don’t have the knowledge needed to understand. @NOLA-vv3sz

@@ReservedInvestments Well, there are a ton of others who are also "educated in finance" who would disagree on the necessity of the Fed. Many who would disagree are smarter than you or I, and many who agree with you are smarter than you or I. So, I am not sure saying you were educated in finance means very much or makes your opinion better than theirs, mine, or anyone else's. Jim Kramer was educated in finance as well. So, were many of the presidents of failed banks, shuttered brokerages, and closed businesses. However, I do agree it is definitely necessary for liquidity. But that is not what the Fed does most of the time. If it were nothing more than a liquidity backstop, that would be one thing. But, the comment section is probably not the most opportune place to have that long a discussion. I found the apparent faith in the Fed to be the funny part though.

@@ReservedInvestments And incidentally, I agree with your takes on the collectible markets. Faith in government agency or its absolute necessity is just something that always gives me a chuckle. I can't help it. And yes, I know the Fed is technically a private entity. But, let's be fair, it is essentially a banking arm of our government. Either way, the Fed comment was not really to take the piss out of you particularly. If the Fed functioned properly, I would probably even agree with you on its overall necessity.

I think they'll be somewhat of a recovery, but only because people think they're buying on the dip. Not realizing that even the prices they've paid are overpriced. Things will stabilize in the long run once all the unsophisticated speculators get burned and exit the market. That said, going through the recent auction I do think some of the lesser known games sold for less than what they should and have a good chance of generating return when that buyer goes on to resell it.

@unstoppableExodia

Shawn is 100% right about The graded video game market. WATA and heritage auctions played a high risk/high reward game by manipulating the market the way they did. They made a lot money in the short term but once their grift was exposed the hype they’d been building died. Interest rates going up didn’t help matters much either. If they had not meddled and let it grow organically over time headed games might be selling for more than they currently are because potential buyers would have more confidence in the market. Conversely for some one with a net worth of tens or hundreds of millions who also happens to be very passionate about video games now is probably a great time to buy graded games if the market will recover and they’re absolutely convinced they ll be worth significantly more in the future but can afford to take the hit if they don’t. Only a time traveler who has future knowledge knows exactly if and how that particular market will recover. I think it definitely will but the unknowns are when the market has hit rock bottom, when will the recovery begin and at what sort of average rate will prices go up over time? I think it will take years for the bad taste to leave the mouths of collectors who fancied themselves as investors who got burned by the hype. I think what will eventually draw new buyers in is the certainty that demand for graded games is organic and the growth in prices is commensurate with the growth in interest in the market. Graded games going from 30k to a million over a couple of years should have always seemed suspicious.

The big tomfoolery about graded video games is that they form a market, that has no real fundamentals. Because actual video game collectors don't collect video games, just so that they get to look nice on a shelf. They actually like to play these games in their original settings, tickling the nostalgic funny bone, that drives these markets. People enthusiastic about video games, wanting to play these games ... imagine that! Most actual video game collectors just roll their eyes when they see these absurd prices for massive print run games, like Zelda and Mario. Games which are not rare at all and are almost trivial to collect. This entire graded video game market is 98% make believe and has amost no overlap with actual collectors. It's a dumb chase after the price tag and nothing else.

Don’t own any games but it’s hard to distinguish market drops when everything dropped. Coinbase stock for example dropped from $280+ to $40 today in this same time frame (April 2021 to today). Some of the sharpest analyst said it was a buy at $200+…Many billion dollars companies are down 60-70-80% from all time highs. Should people quit investing? Sucks for the guy that paid $50k but I’m sure they are participating in todays prices as well so things may average out. It’s not a collectors job to time markets.

Name another pop culture collecting category that in some cases is down over 100%? I’ll wait. You think this is just a ‘normal’ drop?

@@ReservedInvestments I’ve never known any investment to drop over 100% I thought that was the max. But the topsun charizard had a much worse drop. Also, a Luka Donic rookie card took a $1 million hit last week from the previous sale. I don’t think people spending $50k on games are “hurting” like you say.

@@collectibleinvestorIG Yeah, what would I know. I mean I just offer consulting services and have people come to me telling me with their stories. Dude, no offense, your comments and reasoning are laughable...just because you like video games does not mean video games are a good or even prudent 'investment.' Do your own research...

Like they say, "life is hard and even harder if you're stupid." Who are the idiots still buying these games at the LOWER prices? I am not sad for people who bought into hype like this....not at all. All I want to do is laugh. I have no tolerance for truly dumb people.

Just finished viewing the 1-hour long special collaboration between you and GetTheGregGames 🤌🏻 So many great takeaways. The part of the convo when the two of you discussed the differences between investing “then” and now was probably most thought provoking, in my opinion. My generation is beyond guilty of operating in these markets driven by emotion and stubbornness. Shame, too, as it’s beyond evident that people are losing big because they chose not to educate themselves first. Not that I didn’t play a small part myself (because I did), but on a much smaller scale. The emotional self enjoys having comics regardless how much the value declines while the financial self while unburdened still questions the thought process of my decision making process. It’s a constant battle 😅 Anyway, thank you for the fantastic and Truthful insight as always!
