They don’t make love story movie like this any more. Fell in love with UC Berkeley because of this movie and Simon Garfunkel music.

I’d hope not. It’s not a love story at all 😅

@@jamesgarrett3766 well that’s part of the beautiful ambiguity of the story. You can view it as a love story or a non-love story, and both interpretations have a lot of merit, considering the many layers to the writing.

@@12classics39 although I want to agree with your point. I just can’t see how it is a love story. He takes her on one date, treats her horrendously, then she finds he’s been with her mother moves to Berkeley then he just follows her there. My interpretation would be that them running away together is just them rebelling against the system of marrying almost immediately pre sexual revolution, as opposed to them genuinely being in love. Great book/ film and I am open to your interpretations
@benfisher13769 ай бұрын
@jamesgarrett3766 I agree. Him taking her to the strip joint was just part if his rebellious insticts to his borgoius environment. He immediately regrets this and apologises. Later they have a talk and he explains his feelings since graduation, and she seems to understand. I think from then on they kind of see eachother as an escape route. He can't let her go because he's scared, she's the only person who seems to be on his wavelength, and he hers. She says she doesn't want to see him at the college, but still comes back to him, until her dad discovers the affair, and reverts back to the "suitable" guy. But she still wants, or thinks she does, to escape the stifling middle class life.

Some 30 years ago I saw The Graduate near by in a grind house theatre, on The University Av. After the show walked to The Mediterranean and had a cup of coffee at that very same table. Oh man was I thrilled! Saw the movie the first time back in 1969, in Helsinki, Finland.

I was a student at Berkeley during the early 70s and remember Moe's Books on Telegraph Avenue with great fondness. The same for Larry Blake's and Cody's. I can still taste those great French dip sandwiches and those salads with great dressing in the Rathskeller between classes and protests. Man, those were the days! Free love was in the air along with the pungent odor of marijuana. ✌

RE: Bus location and UC/Caffe Med: no, its not. More than likely its probably equivalent to a street in SF like O'Farrell or Geary that would be running East-West. You could take a stab and say its going through Union Square. I have a flier from a Ford Mustang Group that has all the filming errors of either The Graduate or maybe even Bullitt (e.g. the shots of Hoffman/Alfa on the Bay Bridge ARE NOT going towards Berkeley/East Bay).
