THE GRANDMASTER is available now on Digital, Blu-ray Disc and DVD.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, THE GRANDMASTER is an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the legendary Kung FU master, Ip Man who mentored Bruce Lee. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China’s last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts. Filmed in a range of stunning locations that include the snow-swept landscapes of Northeast China and the subtropical South, THE GRANDMASTER features virtuoso performances by some of the greatest stars of contemporary Asian cinema, including Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang.
Written and Directed by Wong Kar Wai. Starring Ziyi Zhang, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Hye-kyo Song, Cung Le, Chen Chang and Woo-Ping Yuen.

The snow was used beautifully to convey their respective styles and personality. Gong Er uses Baguazhang. She was a woman with resolve and determination, giving up her chances at romance for the rest of her life in pursuit of vengeance. Her character has a good symbolism of Yin and the gentleness (柔) in this scene. Much of her techniques involved redirection, usage of palm techniques, and circular maneuvers. Whenever she moves, her feet never kicked up any snow, showing how both her style and her personality is one of reservation and control. Ma San uses Xing Yi. He is a man who was prideful and avaricious, having taken on multiple opponents at once previously, and betraying his country for riches. His character is set up as the Yang and the hardness (刚). His techniques feature linear strikes and wide swings with his fists. His movement always kicked up a lot of snow, and this shows his impulsiveness and lack of control of himsmelf and his power. There is one exception, at the scene where they simultaneously struck each other. Gong Er's fall kicked up a lot of snow while Ma San barely disturbed the snow. The idea is that in the moment, their movement carried the opponent's force and hence the opponent's characteristic. I feel that it served well both as a metaphor for balance (there is yang in yin, and yin in yang), and possibly as a representation of their personality as well. Ma San must have had taken time and resolve to make the decision to side with the Japanese and stick to his decision even when confronted by his master, and it's hard to argue that Gong Er was not at all impulsive in deciding on revenge.

What is the story again behind the final move she makes with her hands onto his face...this is what her father had taught her, correct? On another note, I really loved the Chinese/Cantonese (?) language they spoke in this film, especially Max Zhang's character...there was such a distinct sound to it, a harsh yet deep and beautiful tone. Thank You!
@demonbaned
@demonbaned Жыл бұрын
@@junemoonchild69 Ma San was expelled by his master (aka Gong Er's father) earlier in the story when the master found out Ma San is working with the Japanese. In that fight, even though Ma San had no qualms inflicting lethal damage against his master, the master couldn't bear to do the same to Ma San, and instead used the same palms to the face technique to simply throw him out the house. The master also requested in his dying breath for Gong Er to not seek revenge but instead just to live her own life and be happy, and we know how well that went. I personally see this as a contrast between Gong Er and his father. One is more experienced with how things are in the world, has grown to be more merciful and humble, and less led by his emotion, and the other is more impulsive, hot-headed and prideful. They both use the same technique to end a fight, and on the same person to boot, but with very different intentions and achieving very different results. That said, each ends in its own tragedy: the father had suffered grave injury because of his hesitancy, while the daughter sought revenge at the cost of giving up her marriage and happiness.

Trivia: - The fighting style the woman (Gong Er, played by Zhang Ziyi) uses ("64 hands") is derived from Baguazhang ("8 trigrams palm"), part of the inspiration for a Hyuuga fighting style (also called "8 trigrams 64 palms" in its name) in the anime Naruto ;) It contains a lot of deft turns and hand changes, allowing the wielder to fully utilise all angles of attack/defense. (In Naruto, this is brought up to superpower levels.) - If I'm not wrong, the guy (Ma San, played by Max Zhang) uses a style derived from Xingyiquan ("shape & intent fist"), a style with military origins that emphasizes using full-body coordination to generate bursts of power, turning the wielder into a humanoid weapon. Usually, Baguazhang and Xingyi is practiced together as one school, as they complement each other very well. This is also reflected in the movie, as Gong Er's father (Gong Yutian) is also Ma San's master. Each of them inherited an aspect of their school's skill. The reason for this fight is that Ma San killed Master Gong (after the latter called him out for colluding with the Japanese, who were invading China), and now Gong Er comes to avenge her father.

I also saw him in the original TV series Green Hornet as Kato. I'm 60 yrs old., so I enjoyed this before it was popular. LOL.!! The Grandmaster is a very enjoyable movie., right up their with Ip Man. 😄 A lot of people always look at the punching and kicking aspect of martial arts and not the defensive techniques. 👍

Gong Er's last move was called "The Old Ape Hangs His Signet And Turns Around". Gong Baosen (Gong Er's father, Ma San's teacher) once asked Ma San what the essence of this move was. Ma San wasn't able to (or was not bothered to) give an answer. Gong Baosen told him the essence wasn't hanging the signet, but turning around, urging Ma San to stop colluding with the Japanese, turn around while he still can. Ma San did not like that, and they started a fight. Ma San was pushed out of the house by Gong Baosen with this move, but he was able to hurt Gong Baosen severely with his knee, which led to Gong Baosen's death. To avenge her father, Gong Er took a vow to never marry, never take any student. Then they fought at the train station in Shenyang, as the video shows us. She turned around when Ma San least expected it, then pushed him towards the train. She did not kill Ma San, but she proved that Ma San wasn't the rightful heir to Gong Baosen and their faction, casting him out as a traitor. In this way, her father was finally avenged.

The train starts at 1:19, and the fight ends at 3:24. So it is only a 125 seconds fight. This scene happened in 1931, WWII. At that time, the speed of diesel train was about 100km/h. Therefore the length of the train is 100/3.6*125=3472m. Considering the process of acceleration(avg speed actually lower than 100km/h), in addtion the slow motion(less than 125s), the length is not quite exaggerating.

This was a build up of 1 1/2 hours (spanning over 2 years instory) of her making her way though the desert with her people, towards going north to eventually reclaim the her family's entitlement after this fight. Such a strong build up. Great movie!

A master class in cinematography. Every frame of this film is a work of art. That said, I would have loved a little less slow motion and a little less tight shots. There is one scene towards the end where Gong Er is practicing Bagua and you catch a brief long shot of her at full speed in the snow and it's glorious.

In the movie the One, Jet Li's character plays two versions of himself from alternate universes who end up fighting each other. Each one uses a different martial art: Xing Yi Quan or Ba Gua Zhang, just like in this scene here. But as much as a liked the final fight in The One, this version of Xing Yi vs Bagua here to me is the best by far.

Honestly, she had the advantage here. Small, light, her martial art stresses speed, motion, and leverage. He's heavier, uses a martial art that relies on power which means he's losing a solid chunk of hitting strength being that they're fighting in snow and he can't get full traction.

@@viniciuspaiva3889 Well, he didn't really 'get it' as well as she did. He didn't understand that you had to come under your opponent for that last move. She did. He went for that same kill move that killed their master (her father) but she saw it coming and finished it. She never lost a fight.

Amazing movie, she sacrificed a lot to become an elite fighter and it’s why her father did not want to teach her and wanted her to become a doctor and enjoy having a family and a fulfilling life. In the end she died in pain, and alone but she brought honor to her fathers name. She obviously understood the secret to the move that he couldn’t figure out, it was only when she hit him that he understood it and submitted to her allowing her fathers reputation to be restored.
