Appropriation vs Appreciation is the key. In Bruno Mars' case I'd definitely consider it appreciation rather than appropriation for the simple fact that he acknowledges the origin of his music and he continuous to pay homage to it while doing so. He's not trying to make it seem like he came up with this style of music and is very forthcoming about where and who his inspirations are.

I don't believe that Bruno Mars is a cultural appropriator because he gives the credit to black culture. Cultural appropriation, in my opinion, is when the Kardashians are seen as beautiful by getting black features surgically but thinking that black women are ugly for their natural black features.
@dalell3808

Features can not be owned by a race... Sweety features are not part of ur culture and they could never be that's just stooopid... The cultural appropriation they did is the hairstyles, the lifestyle, the clothes and claiming them as theirs not the features.

@dal ell Exactly, I find it hilarious how Black women complain about the Kardashians "benefiting" off of black women features, yet most of them wear the hair of another woman’s hair on their head.

We do support them, its the Big Machine behind non black artist that promote them more. Tank the singer and Stepheine Mills talks about this very subject in detail. I know this to be a reality when I check out the music section at Target. Justin Timberlake's album is heavily displayed, while other black R&B newly released albums have one spot on the shelf.

They only picked on Bruno Mars because he ain’t going to do shit. He don’t care what anyone thinks! he already admits to being inspired by the black culture so it ain’t nothing new. It’s been like this for years even people we’re so worried about Eminem too. We as society make them popular and it’s not like their music is garbage. its always been🔥🔥🔥. Post Malone and all those other mumble rappers are culture vultures. It’s funny how people pick the most humblest people to argue about. Bruno Mars is far from culture vulture. He worked his ass off and I love every damn song that man comes out with and I’m going to keep supporting his music. Regardless if he is black or not. Good Music is Good Music 🙌🏾💕👌🏾😁

Agreed. Besides, people like Bruno Mars because he’s bringing back that funk music that was popular back with Morris Day and the Time and such. Is any other young black artist doing funk music right now? And like you, I’m still gonna listen to Bruno Mars. Wanna see his ass in concert! Just as I still support Eminem as he’s one of the few mainstream rappers, of my generation, that knows how to talk about something other than a big ass jiggling in the club. I will even support Justin Timberlake as I am a fan of his music. Hell, I grew up listening to his ass. FutureSex LoveSounds is still a bomb ass album that I can listen too from beginning to end.

I think Cultural Appropriation falls more under the realm of making fun of or disrespecting the culture. The rappers who are disrespecting our rappers who have passed on and saying they are "better" than them? THAT is appropriation. Bruno Mars is helping to REVIVE a part of our culture that was abandoned and nearly forgotten. What he is doing is CULTURAL REVITALIZATION! Maybe we should thank him for that, not condemn him for it! My oldest daughter once made the point that culture is made to be shared, and as many people that can pay homage to us and make us remember those parts of our culture that we seemingly forgot or wanted to put to rest... we should thank them for making us remember!

Bruno is the differentiation between appropriation and appreciation. He constantly acknowledges his inspiration and has always expressed a deep appreciation for funk r&b and hip hop. He managed to combine that appreciation with raw talent and turn it into a craft that's not appropriation

I think specifically in Brunos case, its appreciation. This is authentic to him, and he acknowledges the past and history. People like Elvis just took from us, and acted like they created it. No acknowledgement of black culture in Elvis and Beach boys and the Justins. Just my opinion

remember when Miley was acting trashy and "black" using black people and giving the wrong image of hip hop just because she wanted to be in the news everyday,but now is not interesting anymore so she is white American country sweetheart again.. remember when Justin Timberlake humiliated Janet and trashed Prince? what Bruno did ? unlike Justin Timberlake and some white folks he doesn't take credit of everything that prince and Michael did once.. he said that this album was a tribute to his childhood (Mariah, Michael, baby face and in living color) they're right about the color issue but Bruno is working since he has 4 and he is where he is without a super model squad, without beefs and shitting on others careers. leave that guy do his coke and his music.. you're trashing him since he slayed the grammys.. everybody was complaining a few years ago about how underrated Bruno was, don't do to Bruno what they did to Michael.. he is talented and that's it. what about Eminem ? Amy Winehouse? (I love these two good music) Drake? Justin Timberlake? Ariana Grande ? Sam Smith? Mary J Blige put an amazing album out but some folks just support Adele. I really understand the point but Bruno Mars is the least problematic person in the industry.

I don't consider what he does appropriation. He isn't quiet about his influences and he is very respectful of the culture, or at least seems that way. We need to figure out the difference between an artist being influenced by a culture and outright stealing it. There's a difference between him and someone like a Miley Cyrus who put down hip hop when she was done using it to sell records, or like a Justin Timberlake who will clearly take from black culture yet will disrespect it at the same time

Bruno Mars has always been giving props to black music. If you listen to him talk about his childhood and how he got to where he is now you will hear him mention a lot of black artists. Bruno has been doing hip hop/Rnb/doo wop for a long time it's what his music is about so I honestly think that the only thing he did wrong was promote Cardi B

The only issue I have with what Seren said was that she was putting a lot of the responsibility on Bruno, and while I agree he is complicit because it’s his music, i feel like he is more a symptom than the actual problem. Black music is becoming white-friendly, and record labels are embracing this movement because it taps into a whole-new, huge market. There are so many talented, black independent artists who aren’t getting nearly enough recognition. I think black people should be putting just as much energy, if not more energy, into supporting black artists as we put into abhorring appropriating artists.

Villainlyfe Inc. A lot of the current black artist are to vulgar and disrectful. I have kids. Usher had a song talking about ghetto D. Chris Brown sing about sex, drugs, acohol, and strippers (these hoes ain't loyal). Bruno mars music is more digestible to the ears.
@naomilikayi5927

The promoted black artists are the ones that are vulgar. This is what the record companies/radio stations want you to think about all black artists so they can push the masses towards racial ambiguous artists like Bruno. There's plenty of black artists who can be sensual without vulgar and a lot of them are independent or not heavily promoted.
@johnP0908

I don't think he's a symptom, look at the way people wear, they style is returning from the previous decades, now look at Bruno Mars and The Weekend's music for example(I know The Weekend's an Ethiopian, but that's beside the point.), they literally sounded like they were from the 80's and 90's era. nostalgia was also a probable key player why their music was likable compared to other artists.

The face of Asian culture is Asian. The face of white culture is white. The face of Mexican (yeah I no it's not a race) culture is Mexican. But when blacks desire the face of black culture to be black we "hatin" . I call bullshit. No this doesn't take away from any race of person's talent but it seems like what's culturally for each group is for themselves but what's culturally for black is for everyone. But that's what black people get for being so damn inclusive and elevating other before themselves. 🐸🍵

No Bruno is different. When people like the kardashians borrow from our culture they bullshit it and act like there the ones who started the trend when people have been doing it for years before them, unlike Bruno who actually acknowledges that there were people who had been doing this type of music before him and pays homage the right way.

The term “cultural appropriation” is waaay too overused nowadays. Bruno Mars is NOT culturally appropriating. When people use this term for every little thing, it takes away from the real meaning of it. Then when someone really IS appropriating a culture, no one will take it seriously anymore.

POINT, BLACK, PERIOD... Black people are TIRED of being overlooked for what we CREATE and BRING TO THE TABLE..We're TIRED of being taken advantage of.. We're TIRED of being MOCKED, DEGRADED, and Looked DOWN upon for some things in our culture yet.. the Kardashians and Danielle Brigolies becoming praised and getting RICH off of our creativity and brilliance. Charles Williams said it BEST on this thread..." Ppl want their black culture from non black people" and we need to realize this and REACT to THIS... The media plays a huge part in how things are perceived and accepted. These 2 artists are considered safe for crossing over into many racial cultures. They are also 2 very talented individuals.

@JamieBleu
@JamieBleu 6 жыл бұрын
Salsa is black dance and music that came with slavery in Latin America . Much of traditional hispanic/native music and dance have been wiped out of Latin America when they purposely mixed with white people in order to "better the race" but the power of black music is so crazy that it transcends time. It doesn't die. It simply gets stolen by the dominant society and then black people create something new and the cycle continues.

Well said. Its a shame becuz everyone wants to be us. They want bigger lips, bigger butts, darker skin and kinky hair. My friends and i have been saying this for years. The music industry loves R & B however they dont want "us" to sing it they want Elvis, Justin Timberlake etc Matthew Knowles mayed a bold statements about Beyonce's success basing her success on her light skinned. Sad but so true. We ostracized our own people by the color of their skin. This not only goes on in music but sports as well. We no longer hear behind every successful black man is a black woman. Anytime a white woman can impersonate a black person, teach African studies and asssume a black IDENTITY then we have serious issues in 2018. Racism amongst our people still exist.

People need to stop complaining about Bruno and buy their faves records so THEY can be on top of the charts. The thing with people is they have this "there can only be ONE mentality" so instead of supporting female rappers like Remy Ma, Cupcakke, and even Azelia Banks (who's problematic but talented) they chose to say "Nicki is the only queen so f*ck the rest" thus Nicki is the ONLY representative for female and now Cardi is as well (both light skinned). They continue this patter trying to sabotage Ashanti, Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole, etc because "Beyonce is allowed to be the only queen". YOU are hurting these talented people and then turn around and complain about how "only light skinned women make it" or "non black people are replacing us". Maybe support young black starlets like China Anne McClain and Skaii Jackson instead of checking for people the Kardashians all the time.

I also find it strange that all of these black Mumble rappers and R&B singers that put out the same sounding music don't get called out but when a white or non black person puts out the same music it's a problem. That baking a cake comment was so fucked up and tacky. I've never heard Bruno Mars use the n-word or slander black women in the way these rappers do today and he has definitely always paid his respect. I love his music. I don't give a care what race he is. You can tell in his music who influenced him and he says it all the time. Nobody said anything about Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. Debarge. Why bring this up? I don't understand it. Blacks need to go back to use your intellect by using intelligent words. What I mean by that is stop talking about having money sex cars and any other materialistic things. Talk about how to better your community. Talk about realistic things in life that others can relate to. Just a thought.

Just a few things... 1. Are we still not understanding the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation??? I don't care who you are and what race you are in the music world, were all influenced by someone else. That influence is called appreciation... Not appropriation. Especially when you mention your influences without hesitation. 2. Why are we calling everyone of a lighter hue racially ambiguous??? Just stop it!!! Being mixed doesn't make you automatically racially ambiguous. Being light skinned doesn't and has never made you racially ambiguous. If you're a lighter skinned black person and your features are clearly that of a black person, you're just a lighter skinned black person. Your not racially ambiguous at all UNLESS you can pass for another race without question. If you're of another race and someone simply doesn't know your race, it still doesn't make you racially ambiguous. 3. If you're going to consider yourself culturally awake "woke", you should probably not be sleep walking your way through this life. You'll only sound ignorant and uninformed. So why is that chick willing to celebrate someone's demise? The disrespect is real, yet I'm betting she wants her opinion respected. Go figure. Love you Ti!!! You look Marvelous!!! Let me go place my orders before you shut it down and run out! 😍😁😁

He does benefit from his light skin and being racially ambiguous but that doesn't mean he cant do it. It means that blacks need to step up in music and labels need to include black people and make an effort to promote good black artist and not these horrible rappers and R&B faux singers.

Sam LSD No. I talk like a grown up... An elder who knows better. Some people waste their time on unnecessary madness. As a musician, I know we all have been molded and influenced by someone else's style. That will never be cultural appropriation. And if you don't own a dictionary like we did back in the day, you can easily look up the definition of ambiguity online. People today use the term racially ambiguous to loosely in my opinion. Furthermore, speaking with intelligence and an opinion has nothing to do with race. Check yourself!

Bruno Mars is not black at all. I love him, and he definitely shows his appreciation for black culture and I absolutely love his music. However, that being said, her saying he was racially ambiguous wasn't because he isn't fully black because he isn't black at all. He is a mixture of ethnicities which is why he could be considered racially ambiguous. His name is Peter Gene Hernandez, he is Puerto Rican, Filipino, Ashkenazi, and a little bit of Spanish. That is why she is calling him racially ambiguous, not just because he is light skinned.

Tamarrah Cherry while I partially agree with you I stated I was tired of the overuse of the term in general. I stand by that. Furthermore, you have two parents. You can only be part of two. Different nationalities can be part of your heritage but you personally can only be part of your father and your mother. For instance, my son is black, he's married to a young lady who is Panamanian and black; (her Mom is Panamanian and her Dad is black. ) My grandchildren are black. Period. Although my relatives are Bahamian, they wouldn't be Panamanian, Bahamian, Black and Spanish. Spanish is a language, not an ethnicity. Regardless of their names. They are just black. It's not the fact that he does not give credit, the real take away is that Bruno Mars and non black/ racially ambiguous artists are being used as the face of black music. It is the erasure, they would not give a black bruno mars a chance whether if he did not curse or use vulgar language, that is the difference. So we are supporting our own erasure, that is the issue. Black people should not have to work twice as hard to stay relevant in our own genre of music. We need to stop letting these people in to take over, because they are being used against us.

Also, w/ the awards deal, isn't it already known that award shows prefer ambiguous artists, so should we blame the artist or the award show? I know it's not fair, but why aren't predominantly black award shows promoting such artists? I think we're shifting blame and sending hate to the wrong one(s).

Bruno Mars always pays homage to black culture and music which a lot if not most black artist have forgotten... now they're mad....if there wasn't artist like Bruno this generation wouldn't know what great r&b was...nor who were most of the artist of that time....and that's sad....

Black ppl are looked down at the most, but everybody be quick af to appropriate our shit. Just let hiphop and r&b die. We are the culture. R&b, soul, hip-hop, rock n roll, and jazz RIP. We need to reinvent ourselves once again for the millionth time...

Bruno Mars respects the culture and credits a lot of the greats so it's not culture Appropriation. He's not claiming or acting like he started shit and he also doesn't do our genre one day and then disrespects the next unlike many white artist black people still support.

1)Ti deserves to be apart of Grapevine, actually in fact she deserves to have her own tv show. 2) I give up on this generations rap music. 3) I'm so close to giving up on R&B as well, but I have hopes that SZA will make a change, although I desperately miss Brandy, Erykah Badu, India Arie, etc. I just miss the old neo soul type of R&B. 4) XXXTentacion, if you don't shut your mumbling ass up, I will call the Migos and tell them to jump your ass again. You are not better than Tupac and you will never be.

Yep...Welp lol Black people may have CREATED Ragtime, Jazz, Blues, Rock (Rosetta Tharpe ,Chuck Berry) , R&B..etc. But black people have NEVER OWNED their music. Either because it was stolen or Black people sold out. Nothing wrong with us SHARING our culture with outsiders, but we don't really OWN our culture. Because of this, when we share it, we get nothing in return........Maybe we should create a new genre of music, except this time there needs to be Boundaries, We should have full Control and Respect the Culture.

these "rappers" are really saying they are bigger and dont wanna be compared to Tupac, Biggie and NWA????? i dont even listen to much of tupac/biggie/ NWA and I STILL KNOW how Pioneering they were! But also, I think Bruno Mars is part Afro-Boricua and I know Hip/hop was created in NYC by black americans and Boricua ppl, then later spread to other cities with big black and latino communities and now every region has their own style. ( compare Chicago's Twista to NYC Biggie) Watch the documentary - From Mambo to Hip-hop- explains this cultural musical mixing. Anyways just my thoughts on this issue with today's "rappers" who dont know anything about anything lol -___-

Sheso Madeline exactly many Latin American musical genres like salsa, merengue, cumbias, son jarochos , bomba, changui, rumba bachata, are heavily west African and Native American influence. That's why it's so natural for USA Latinos to assimilated to black American genres. What u think ?

For years, until recently I assumed Bruno was black. Allot Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans are black in race, but have a Spanish culture. What about Bruno isn't black? thick lips, wide nose, brown skin & thick black hair. He isn't dark skinned with coily hair, but neither is Obama & Beyonce. But they're still considered black. I don't think he can appropriate being black when he like Amara Le Negra are clearly black.

Girl, other racea have thick lips e.g. BROWN people, have you met Filipinos cause alot of thwm have those features, heck most are darker than alot of black people of african descent. Girl, you're definitely crazy By your damn ass logic then everybody who has brown skin, thick lips and wide nose is black. Therefore, Mindy Kaling is black.

coco chanel That makes no sense, you are influenced by your grandparents directly or through your parents. This man has never denied his heritage. Is he not supposed to embrace the heritage of all four of his grandparents? If not which ones does he get to embrace and which ones does he need to turn his back on? If this is solely about his blackness being American, last time I checked Puerto Rico was still in the US.

I love that the Grapevine is having this discussion. I am not against Bruno Mars but I find it disturbing as a black person. There is a LONG history in this country of building things off the backs and hard work of black people and not giving then the power or respect in that field. The world is literally telling us all the time in many ways/industries we love all that you do and have made but we don’t love YOUR BLACK ass. That’s in music, fashion, hairstyles, physical features. Everything. There is a insidious movement that is contributing to the erasure of black people. When you look at traditionally white areas you rarely see non white or others being able to have high levels of success because they keep their shit tight. That’s Hollywood, ballet, country music, and whatever other areas they don’t let black folks into! But nope. Not black folks we say because u pay homage it’s ok and let everyone in to overtake everything we’ve built. That’s not working for me. Sorry.
