Drake is black so the convo is a little different. Black people are spread out throughout the globe. We would have to have a convo about whether or not black ppl throughout the diaspora can partake in the subcultures within black culture. Plus Drake has put a lot of artists on & put a lot of bread in their pockets. Culture vultures only take. They don't contribute to the culture

I'm still baffled as to why they think Bruno Mars is taking something from them. They are acting like he's white and has no ethnicity. It doesn't matter if he was, he makes all kinds of music. What are they doing other than complaining about something that is not owed to them? *drops mic* like the energy that is put into this is giving him more publicity. They never end a discussion name dropping local or smaller or even big artists of the culutre only complain to complain. There was a UK artist not so long ago on one of their platforms, they only mentioned her twitter handle like they normally do with the whole panel, but that was a moment to highlight her as an artist and her music.

How are black artist not supported enough when they are dominating the music industry and have done so for a while now. Just look at the stats from 2017. Despite black people being ~14% of the population, black artists represent: 70% of the top 10 songs currently on the Billboard Hot 100. 50% of the songs on the Billboard 2017 Year-End charts. 50% of the top 10 Forbes Highest-Paid Entertainers of 2017. 38% of Billboard's Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Artists. 32% of the most Grammy-awarded albums ever (at least 6 awards in one night). 70% of the top 10 most Grammy-awarded females ever. 40% of the top 10 most Grammy-awarded males ever.

At the end of the day, the base of the argument was that these folks want rewards and recognition from white organizations and establishments and saying its “not fair” because non POC are getting noticed for. If Bruno Mars is being lifted up, it’s not him, it’s the system which you claim you hate, yet, seeking recognition from. What would be the suggestion for Bruno Mars to do in order to express himself musically. What genre of music should BM contribute to? Or do you want to EXCLUDE him from being a creative?

So much weight on Bruno. Y’all want to be in Bruno’s pockets and in his face about what he is or is not doing for the community. But what is black people that we consider black enough doing for us? Bruno Mars has a black band, black back up singers/ dancers, producers...etc. His talent is allowing these people to live their dreams. If yall dont consider him black enough, then he shouldn’t be made to show his receipts for his philanthropic work. I agree with some of what yall said, but the overall feel of this discussion sounds like y’all aren’t even mad at Bruno, nor do yall truly believe he’s an appropriator, but just feeling the bite of the industry and taking it out on the wrong person. Had Bruno not won an award he would not have been talked about.

you didnt watch the whole conversation or original video did you? they already said SEVERAL times this situation is important because it reflects society's view of blackness at large. its bigger than just bruno. they also discussed why it is problematic to use black people in the background as probs to legitamize Bruno's perceived blackness which is literally what bruno does. im happy they are able to make more money. but ultimately bruno would be NOTHING without that band. and I know for a fact they don't get paid nearly as much has he does and work just has much/hard as him. it is patronizing to say that is "allowing them to live their dreams". because they deserve more than just being probs that are allowed to be used. but those men would never have the same track to fame as Bruno because they are unambiguous dark skin black men and women and thats the point. judging from your profile photo im going to be as blunt as possible. if you and bruno had the exactly same level of talent, you would not get the chance to produce your work to the world in the same fashion and magnitude that he has because he's a non threathening light skinned person and you are NOT. why cant you see that this issue affect you too? if you dont believe me produce a piece of art and publish it with your face associated with it and then publish it again with a white person or light skinned persons face and you will see which one people will gravitate to more.

Sooo..... Bruno Mars. The man who samples beats, makes dope hits, and wins awards for them. The man who will honestly and willingly talk and express how all of his inspirations are black people and artist. Is appropriating the black culture even though he does nothing but shows homage for an acceptance speech instead of saying it was all him and his own talents. I don’t understand why this topic is even serious. He appreciates and shows love for the music and the artist who inspired him to make the music he does. It’s not his fault that listeners prefer their black music from non-black artist. He was put in a system (like most systems) that was set against black people, so don’t black him for things he can’t control. He studied the genre of music he wanted to present and he presented it well and as a NON-Black artist he does a damn good job at it in my opinion.

This whole argument about appropriation is a good one. However, I think picking Bruno Mars as the person to use as an example is wrong. The album of the year category basically came down to Bruno, Kendrick, & Jay-Z. That is a singer vs. two rappers. Woke vs. Groove. It's about preference. I love R&B & New Jack Swing music and I am happy that Bruno Mars is helping to keep my favourite genre's alive. I think we should be praising him rather than trying to tear him down. I also feel that if Bruno Mars grew up listening to Soul music why shouldn't he be able to sing and perform it? If he was bad at it no one would care but because he is good and the world has taken notice then it means he is stealing from us. I don't agree! Our problem is not with Bruno it is with the music industry! I hope Bruno continues to sing R&B music because I enjoy it! Miley Cyrus clearly tried to steal our style and our music and once things stopped working for her, she denounced her so-called blackness like it was a bad cold that she just got over. SMH! That is who you bring up as an example. and you stick with her. Sam Smith, Adele, & Robin Thicke shouldn't be blamed because they have fallen in love with our music. Blame the industry and bring more of the music back so they have no choice but to acknowledge it! In the 90's R&B music was everywhere! You want the conversation to change then today's artists need to make a sacrifice and change the music back to what it was and watch how the game takes notice. No one is making money off music sales anyway these days. Why not take a gamble and bring real R&B and New Jack Swing back?

+Angelisa Hassan You don't even know if my feelings on this topic has changed or not. In the last couple of days, ive had a great discussion about Bruno and in some sentiment, my feelings have changed, not entirely though. I don't believe in the segregation of musical genres based on race. So elimanting Bruno or any non-black artist from R&B/Hip hop is just as bad. But recognize who is being promoted first and why, especially how our instutions are set up historically. I do believe that there's a discrepancy on how the world precieves black people and black culture. And who amongst races are going to quickly earn the most by playing the same kind of music. So these "cry babies" do have a reason on why their complaining. Its just on a matter of delivering the news and solving the problem which they don't know how to do.

The sooner we stop giving a damn about the Grammy's, Oscars and Emmy's the better off we'll be. The biggest problem I have with us "trying to get recognition" from these existing entities is, we're looking for their approval on music that was created by us. Black folk have created all existing forms of popular music that comes out of the United States. Country, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Hip Hop, Pop, Rock and Roll, all of them came from black folk. When we recognize that it's more important to receive the Soul Train Music Award vs the Grammy or any award from our institutions, the better off we'll be. As long as we continue to look for their recognition the more pathetic we look. When "I Believe I Can Fly" did not win for song of the year in 1996, I have not watched a music award show since then...22 years. We're talking about artist appropriating, fu-- that, at least Bruno give props! F--- these institutions!!! We have to do better...stop patronizing the award shows.

Although I don't agree that he is an appropriator I think your comment is a little of what they were hinting to. They were basically saying that the simple fact that you would hear his songs on a mainstream popular hip hop station versus someone like a Jazmine Sullivan is based on how record labels and the media like black music or soul from non-black artist. With that said, I think calling him an appropriator is very much a reach since he shows appreciation.

@@NaNA68424 what does him being non-black have to do with anything? He struggled just like anyone who’s ever made it. He was dropped by Motown records. Record companies didn’t pick him up because they thought he wouldn’t appeal to the masses because of the way he looked (multiracial). They wanted him to do Spanish sounding music because of his last name being Hernandez. Just like record labels didn’t believe in Kanye, Jay-Z etc. These artist break through from their hard work and talent and that’s it. If he can get played on radio for doing black music it’s just cuz he’s really that talented.

@@ERizzo5 For decades there have been discussions on the topic of blue eyed soul. It's the idea that people want rnb music but packaged in a different body.. If you ever watched the movie "Dream Girls", they touch on this. This does mean that Bruno or even White artist don't struggle at all, but the struggle will never be to the extent that Black artists struggle in R&B music, because Bruno's racial ambiguity still provides him privileges in comparison to his black counterparts. This is not to say he isn't talented, but we can't ignore that race will always be a factor.

The comments made by seren were clearly biased. When she said she’d bake a cake if bruno died I already knew everything that came out of her mouth after that was going to be hateful. She didn’t really have any facts to support her argument and accusations either. Bruno mars is a filipino man who grew up listening to black artist. He was inspired by them and he wanted to make music like them because thats the sound he loves. I don’t know all the facts about him being sued for allegedly stealing black artist from earlier generations music, but from what i’ve seen, bruno has never claimed to have been the originator of the sound he uses. I have also never seen or heard of him disrespecting black culture. On the grapevine they say white people only want to hear black music from non black artist, which is not completely true. If you ever go to any of these popular black hip hop and R&B artists shows you’ll see that the crowds are full of or have a lot white faces screaming these black artists lyrics. Are you upset with bruno or are you upset with the consumers and the people in control of these award shows ?

It is actually simple guys. Bruno and other non-black artist are used because they're talented enough to generate a lot of money from the formula of using black artistry. It is more beneficial to white supremacy to use our music and package it with a non-black person. Its to the detriment of actual black artist whom are more talented and could be elevated, yet are overlooked and don't recieve the same accolades or wealth. An example of the agenda for clarity : Beyonce wanted to perform a country song from her last album at the Country Awards and was SHUNNED and shut out as well as being racially attacked. It is a fact that Black ppl are the originators of the country genre. However, we are shut out now as the outsiders of something we created. The same is happening in hip hop. Black ppl wanna be so inclusive with what little we still have and now you have the Post Malones clowning the genre yet STILL making money from it and then the recent white artist blatantly disrespecting a legend like Tupac in the media. We give away all that we have so willingly and wonder why we're in the position we're in. Ask your local nail salon, carry outs and beauty supply store owners whether you can get put onto their Chinese manufacturers and see what response you get. Every1 protects their own except black people. Yall can't see the forest for the trees smh.

Nakib Has It's obvious that you're making a LOT of assumptions based on your own prejudices and presumptions. 1. I am a Bruno fan. 2. I'm not that big of a Beyonce fan so you actually know more lyrics than me lmao. 3. My son's paternal grandmother is filipino and we've visited Manila twice and I've been learning a tagalog dialect for a few years now. FIRST OF ALL, if you would like to talk history. Lets start with the indigenous filipinos for example, the Aetas, as 1 particular group and many other mountain tribes. THEY ARE OF BLACK ORIGIN! The spaniards raped and pillaged the Phillipines as they did in many other regions. Right now those indigenous people are considered the outcast. While the culture and phenotyoe of the rapist has become what's adopted in normal society. I draw the correlation between that scenario and what happens if black ppl are not careful with our artistry. We will be the outcast in something that was birthed from our blood, bodies, minds and creativity. IMO this isn't about Bruno personally, I think he's talented. However he is definitely being used and elevated within a white supremacist structure that has always been engrained in American culture. If you don't identify as a Black American or of immediate African descent or identity, then I don't expect you to understand the concern. Enjoy your Bruno Mars and Post Malone playlist and carry on.

To answer the questions to why black people aren't profiting of our cultures. The reason is because we not only DON'T own the record labels that create these artistry we also DON'T own channels of music distribution as a whole. If there was more ownership of music from our culture we would be able to be more selective. Secondly there is no accountability in our community ie everyone forgets that TI was the one that brought Iggy azelea to the culture to appropriate. We get on to her but he gets a pass. We hand out passes but nobody wants to take responsibility when the Miley Cyrus's of this world choose to later revoke their pass once they've made their money! No everyone should get called out from the appropriators to the one that gave passes in the first place, I'm fair with roasting everyone!

I have to say that if I was Bruno I wouldn’t want to turn up to be attacked either. It feels like a case of the car tyre going down so you kick the cat. As for Seren she made such an obnoxious statement, so wrong on any level, said to anyone, at anytime!!!!, going viral as a result of that, is sickening to me. She couldn’t turn up to take the heat for what she said that angered so many, why would Bruno want to throw his precious time on that. It is a great subject to discuss and there are more intelligent ways of having these conversations than making hurtful statements about baking a cake to celebrate anyones death. I want to understand and I want to be part of the change, however I can’t see someone like Seren being a a good part of that ever, I want to listen to all who want to speak but not someone who sounds jealous and nose out of joint at someone who always pays it and forward and works so hard. No person got to choose where or when they were born, nor who their parents are. Fashion can’t be stolen. It’s not a national dress or uniform, it’s what we like and a form of flattering if you think about it. Bruno had dreams as a kid, like us all and he’s getting to achieve those dreams through hard work and dedication, not because he wants to hurt anyone in fact I think it’s quite the opposite. I’ve never seen anything that would intentionally hurt someone when it comes to Bruno and the mistakes he’s made he is open about and prefers to leave them in the past and learn from them.

He also never forgets to give credit where credit is due. What more would you want from him? I personally think this is just out of jealousy coz a non-black artist is having more success with black music more than black artists, themselves. It's not Bruno's fault he's talented. It's the industry's fault for not recognizing more black talent. Like I said, they're picking on the wrong person here.

Also, we cover a very broad range of topics, from Libya to Kaepernick, every single week. This was made a topic after it was being discussed on social media and none of us expected this episode to get this reaction. So the more insightful question is--- why is it that out of ALL our serious discussions, people made THIS one viral? M. B. Joe Prada I’m black from TX so I grew up with lots of kids like you. I was always confused at how the other POCs so easily and authentically maneuvered black culture but I didn’t know much of anything about theirs. It’s only now when my Hispanic or Asian peers embrace their culture more that I can start to see where our cultural differences lie. I guess in 2018 it’s required that you stay true to the culture linked to your identity and not your surroundings, so you’d have to stay in your Mexican American lane. Totally different climate from back in the day. Appreciation and sharing is still ok but don’t think exhibiting the characteristic or customs of a culture not linked to your racial or ethnic identity is out of bounds.

See here lies the problem telling someone who considers themselves Hip Hop and that's not a race but a culture of America which yes it was created in the streets of NY by underprivileged black youth. Created to speak up for the underprivileged kids of the hood, ghetto, slums, whatever it may be. we seem to forget that hip hop true hip hop at its core was created to give a voice to the powerless.

M. B. Joe Prada well you asked and I gave you an answer. There’s an emerging Hispanic hip hop scene here in TX. Basically hip hop/rap beats (screw in this case) in Spanish. Try that but with a Bay Area twist. Hip hop in its historic or current form isn’t the only way to give a voice to the voiceless. Bruno gets in trouble because he doesn’t add anything to the genres he mimics. If you are a Mexican American that sounds/looks like a black person I don’t think it’ll fly in 2018 or beyond. They even gave Eminem a hard time and he’s still not black folks favorite (but very respected) so what makes you think you won’t get heat?

If you want to play this game, you will end up at the bottom because you don't seem to follow your logic to it's natural conclusion. Don't you see that integration requires appropriation?

We don't appreciate our own talents but prefer a talentless person for example like Karruche because of her looks. Alot of great and trained actors are not getting work. We as black folks love popularity instead of talents. Bruno is extremely talented and seems more appreciative of our culture unlike Justin, Pink, Miley, Kardashians etc

"I Will Always Love You" is a song originally written and recorded in 1973 by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton She re-recorded the song in 1982. She's a blond haired blue eyes white woman. Whitney Houston recorded her version of the song in 1992. Her single spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. It also holds the record for being the best-selling single by a woman in music history. It eclipced the version of the original writer and perfomer even though Whitney was a black lady and the original was a southern white lady. People don't care about people's color when it comes to music. If the music is good then it's good. "Hound Dog" was written by two white guys, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Recorded originally by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton on August 13, 1952, in Los Angeles. Bruno has written songs for lots of black people.

It's an echo chamber. I saw "Hot 97" an I expected to at least see Ebro, but it's basically part 3 of the Grapevine panel chat. In fact this is even worse because at least on the Grapevine panel there was some opposite opinions to spark a discussion.

Bruno Mars didn't steal your couch. He came to your house and saw your couch and really liked it, so he went out and got one exactly like it. And everyone came to HIS house and said "what a great couch!" And now you're mad because his style isn't original. Well it isn't. But.... if he told everyone that he loved your couch and that's why he got one like it... Then.... Should we not blame the ones who put all the praise on him? Instead of the one who appreciates your style so much that he wants to imitate it? I feel like the focus is wrong. If you don't feel that Bruno Mars deserved an award for his music, then start with the fact that he didn't give the award to himself. Quit aiming at a possible ally and focus on the actual problem - the ones who love him while ignoring our culture.

Cultural Appropriation? Damn....life must be good for someone to take offense to this "imagined" offense. We ALL take from other sources, whether apparent or not. It's not stealing unless you can prove it in court.

Did this girl really say that the only reason why she likes his hair is because she’s seen it already?? For hair that naturally grows out of his head curly?? Are you serious?? And to be honest, what hasn’t been taken for inspiration or copied to a small extent?? Bruno isn’t even a bad guy, music culture won’t ever be exclusive to one people.

This is what's wrong with the black movement. This isn't a discussion but a circle of "victims". Most of these points don't stand. What about Kendrick Lamar winning 4 grammys, including rap album of the year. How come we don't hear about that?
