The Grappler (Len Denton) discusses drinking with Andre the Giant and how he was like to wrestle in Mid South ➤ TitleMatchNetwo...
Back in 1981, Andre the Giant and Dusty Rhodes were defeated by The Grappler and Super Destoyer at the New Orleans Superdome. The Grappler was only 21 years old at the time when he was featured in this major match with Andre.
Find out what the Grappler says Andre the Giant would drink before and after his matches! Len has a fascinating perspective because he was also Andre's driver when the Giant would come into work Texas and Louisiana. Andre and Denton would have many matches together over the years while working the territories.

How did he bulk up enough to be able to compete and be taken seriously? Very curious since early 80's steroids weren't very available yet.

Len Denton is one of the most underrated and under valued pro wrestlers of the 70s and early 80s. Great worker, good on the Mic

I loved The Grapplers. I think I was around 13 or 14 yrs old in 1982/1983 the 1st time I got to see Len Denton & Hercules Hernandez as The Grapplers & Don Carson was their manager. I used to watch them when they wrestled in Tully Blanchard's dad's southwest Texas Wrestling territory & in The Von Errich's Dallas Texas territory. Man...I miss the 70s & 80s wrestling territory days!!! I grew up in Gordon Alabama...about 20 miles south of Dothan Alabama & watched Ron & Robert Fuller's territory...Southeastern Championship Wrestling territory. WRESTLING WILL NEVER BE THAT GOOD AGAIN!!! Much love from Mobile Alabama

When you are in a bar and Andre comes up to you and says, "Boss, DRINK!!!", you DRINK. Even if you don't consume alcohol, you DRINK. And then you say, "Thank you, boss". Any time I hear an old wrestler talk about Andre, the first thing I want to hear are the stories about his drinking.

Poor Andre...couldn't dial a rotary phone with his fingers. Jake the Snake said that Andre couldn't always use a regular toilet, particularly in Japan, and so he would piss and shit in the bathtub and turn the shower on to get rid of it. One of his friends said that Andre really wanted to go see a Broadway show, any show, but knew the seats would never fit him and that he'd cause so much attention it would be unfair to the performers.

I just LOVE these road stories...!!! I could honestly listen to these guys all day long. I think there should be a dedicated KZbin channel for ALL the legends. Dubbed something like "Legends Road Stories" or the opposite "Road Story Legends". I dunno something along those lines i can't believe there isn't something like that out there. I think it would generate a MASSIVE following. And something that should be looked into. It gives these guys an outlet and a way of talking about there careers and the like.

Funny thing is Black Bart told this exact story about Andre looking for Len Denton to go out and drink and somehow found Len at his house one night and lifted Len up in his bed before dumping him out of it trying to wake Len up so he would go out drinking with Andre.

The Grappler was a force when he hit Mid-South the first time. I have always wondered what Mid-South would have looked like if he had not wanted to leave while he was on top. Watts thought he was crazy because of the amount of money he was rolling in in those days.

I’d like to know who made the decision for Len to work under a mask. I’d also like to know who made the Grappler’s masks and did he ever find it claustrophobic wearing it.
