I've learned 100x more about script, narrative, characters and conflict with your videos than I've learned in 3 years of film school. This channel should be an obligatory part of every film school's program!

This is a huge slap on my face. And more. I'm having serious doubts for myself thinking as to how other writers can just write almost without any hindrance in their process. Great to know the real problem has been my attitude towards it and if I can just focus I might actually finish something and finally be proud to say "I did this". Thank you. :)

Yeah I've noticed this as well. It's important to finish your work and learn from the many and inevitable mistakes you'll make rather than focusing on being perfect the first time. Helpful video and keep up with the writing man:)

Another great video, Tyler! I think that a lot of writers also listen to people like the Coen Bros. and Tarantino that say that they just start writing and figure out the story structure as they go - BUT, and it's a big one, and even Tarantino has said it himself about his writing, they work in genres that are pretty laid out, so they are following a road map, whether conscious or not. I think the bigger issue with a lot of start and stops is that the writers haven't spent enough time figuring out their story, and think that they can just jump in and the story will come to them. As they say, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail...

I've noticed this applies to all things creative. Example would be, you're a game developer but have 0 finished games and your folder is full of unfinished projects. Same with writers, you get into a few pages, you review it and you go "jesus, it's so shit, it's cringeworthy" and then you move on to the next one. Ad inifitum...

Damn!!! I feel attacked! Lmao. But great advice!! I have finished 2 feature length scripts and am hard at work on my third but I have like 5 other features that are in various stages of completion! Lol. I plan to go all the way with this third one and then hopefully start going back and finishing the other five 1 by 1. Thanks for the inspiration!

I'm good at finishing the first draft of a script, but I'm terrible at re-writing. I can push through until "The End" of a 100 page draft, but then when it's "finished", the prospect of rewriting it -- especially doing a page 1 rewrite -- is so intimidating that I always just move on to my next idea and write a first draft of that instead. So I kind of the have the problem Tyler describes in this video, but I also kind of don't. I almost never abandon a screenplay once I start writing it, despite constantly being tempted by that shiny new ideas that seem easier than the current one, but then once I'm done, I'm too lazy to put in the work of fixing the first draft and doing a second.

I just thought of a NEW story idea It's that a person wants to write a screenplay, but he can't, because he's afraid of what it might turn out to. But again, that's not a lot of pages.

Whats your opinion on noticing something isnt good and instead of hoping to a new idea you completely reconstruct your original idea with the same premise but different structure? Your recent videos on arcs got me thinking and it really opened my eyes so instead of hoping to this brand new idea I rewrote my original idea to fit a structure and it makes a lot more sense. Its basically like I gave up on the original idea but instead of a new premise its just a restructure of the old one.

You know, I kinda solve this problem by working on 2 scripts, when I get tired or bored, I jump into the other and that keeps me spinning the wheel without ever getting stuck. But I have another problem, the "greener" on the title is my issue. I write crappy comics for teenagers, but they're not attractive to me, and the stories that I would like to write are not interesting for anyone else. So, what does that mean? Is my grass greener if the public thinks so, or if I do? I think my stories are not likeable because the subtext is never clear, I just write a sequence of events structured in a story way, but the subtext are very vague or non-existent. Do you have any advice for me? :/

Why not write something you care about
@BlairMuellerArt
@BlairMuellerArt 5 жыл бұрын
Make the subtext more clear. Don't worry about whether other people will like it, you will never please everyone. Just write something you care about, as best as you can, and go from there. Right now, unless you're getting paid to write something, only worry about pleasing yourself with the finished script. If you like it, I guarantee someone else will. Just write something you love and are proud of.

Why would anyone want to write a script at all if they cared about criticisms too much? Movies in general are a huge sink hole of unpublished material, better to try getting your work where it gets to people and if it’s not going to anyway (same as if it would regardless of it’s merit) than why not do it how you like? Happy mediums if you want to be successful.

For anyone who gets stuck early on, or in the middle of their story, one way to make progress might be this; Try writing an internal monologue for each of your characters. It might spark on idea that gets you back on track.

You know what I'm stuck with, I think my present story is so good that I need to 'save it' for when I'm a better writer and write my less good stories for learning. Is this ok?
@BlairMuellerArt
@BlairMuellerArt 5 жыл бұрын
I've done this before too. When I was just getting serious about writing, I had several ideas that were so "big" I knew my skill level wouldn't do it justice, so I opted for less "big" ideas and wrote them. I have so many ideas that it was very easy to just write other ones. I've written over a dozen scripts, a couple novels, a few short stage plays (even produced a couple of them), a rock opera, a musical (both not quite finished)... and yet, I still have some of those big ideas sitting there. It's been about 10 years, but now I feel like I'm actually skilled enough as a writer to tackle some of those bigger concepts without feeling like I'm not good enough to write them. But everything Tyler is saying here is spot on.... just write till the end and you will learn so much more than dropping a project and moving on to something else just because you get stuck. We all learn at our own pace. I know that had I tried to write this one particular story 10 years ago I would have been discouraged that it wasn't good and probably never finished it, but even still, now, I'd be totally fine to go back to it and start over. A lot of the time, I think the reason people get stuck 20-30 pages in is because the start writing too soon without doing any outlining, or beat board, or really knowing who their characters are, the theme, the "hero's journey" etc.. and they just start writing with no clue where the story is going or what it's really about underneath... character drives story, and if you don't know your characters very well, it makes it hard for them to drive the story. Writing the script is the last thing I do when a new idea comes... it comes between the research, study, outlining, beat board, character development, structure, etc, and editing. But after doing all that work, writing the actual script is so much easier. I could spent 4+ months planning a script, and only 5-7 days writing the actual 110 pages of script. Then it comes down to editing and rewrites.
