If you sat through this video, you might want to research something called "flow state". It's the mental state where you are typically most productive. It can take anywhere from five minutes to thirty minutes of working on a task to get "in flow", but only a ten second interruption to take you back out. Being able to get in and stay in flow is important for any task that requires concentration.

Writing really is a difficult task especially when you have stuff that is a distraction or an interruption to the process, I can say that I've definitely gotten distracted when writing scripts in the past. Trying to complete a large quantity of writing while at the same time trying to make that writing as good as possible is almost impossible if you've things that are distracting or interrupting you.

I kind of relate with you on this. Most of the time when I sit back to write I am always distracted either internally or externally.

Thank you! The people in my life don't understand this. Do not disturb on the phone all day. And noise cancelling headphones when necessary. People never get it. They act like people can casually focus and write well. If you want to write well you have to give it your utmost focus, concentration, and brain power.

Great video! Long term focus is a game of outsmarting your lazy, short-attention-spanned self.

One thing I do to eliminate distractions and zero in my thoughts is to listen to ambient music. I don't listen to my favorite songs because that'll pull me out of my work. Instead I listen to yoga music or sci-fi scores - anything that sets the emotional tone for my next scene. So with the headphones on and my phone on silent, it clears up a lot of distractions (plus the music gets my mood in sync with the scene).

@Tyler Mowery, It's like being O'Henry for me. Someone has to use the sofa to block my exit, like his editor did for him. Forcing myself to just sit down and write. That's my challenge. O'Henry was getting $400 to $500 a story when he wrote. That's how powerful distractions can be.

I need more exercises, I need characters that are purposefully generic but that makes the story go like a test.. but I can't pull it out, creating characters is veeery hard. New concepts are easy and big goals, but actually making a starting chapter is hard.

Tyler, You might find Cal Newport's blog and book interesting: calnewport.com/blog/ His articles on deliberate practice and how to improve focus are excellent and I'd highly recommend if you need help or motivation.

Speaking of focus, your video is informative, but dizzying. Please get a stand for you camera, I got nauseous watching. ;)
