Seeing the film Lawrence of Arabia in 1964, introduced me to the idea of ruthless determination to achieve his end for his Arab colleagues. That characteristic has carried me through the rest of my life! I was simply inspired. I have since, read all the books by and about him. Thank you for sharing. Next summer, I shall visit Clouds Hill and his grave!

I like to walk the track on through the ford just down the lane which is lovely for sailing pond yachts with the children and taking picnics. The lane through the ford goes on toward his cottage at clouds hill, a lovely walk in the footsteps of TEL. All very special. Thank you for posting.

Hello from Australia Rufus. Many thanks indeed for an absolutely BRILLIANT presentation on Lawrence of Arabia. I first learned about Lawrence on or about 1960, and took my very first girlfriend (A Yorkshire girl) on our first date to the cinema in Melbourne to see that great film Lawrence of Arabia. Many years down the track (I married a different girl) who was also fascinated with Lawrence. Following the birth of our children, our oldest son also became fascinated by Lawrence and no need to tell you; every 3 months or so; we'd watch the video of that film. In 1998, I visited the UK to catch up with relatives and a cousin's father who was a doctor at Oxford University; took me on a tour of that university. The one thing I needed to see was the Chapel in which Lawrence worshiped at Oxford. I took several photographs of the bronze bust of Lawrence in that Chapel and still have it with me to this day. I am sorry my time in England was limited to Three months but I had to get up to Scotland and Eire to visit relatives and other battle fields. I wish I had time to visit the grave of Lawrence and pay my respects. Many thanks for your video which is very appreciated.

There are so many theories surrounding TE L and I have said before, I smell a rat and I wonder if he was gay we'll never know. Remember Aquaba. It's all very close to home the Wareham effigy of Lawrence is wonderful.

There seems to be some evidence appearing now that Lawrence was aware of the likely outcome of the Arab alliance with the British, more certainly toward the end of the campaign. Britain and France's track record around this time did not hint at anything but the eventual land grab was nothing genuinely unexpected. As a relatively junior officer there was little he could have done with this information without setting himself up for court martial. This was an era when empires were considered the logical way of the world and even "white colonies" were just Cannon fodder for the mother country to use and abuse for the benefit of the home land involving them in a war which had little relevance to them. A lesson was learned from this and some, like my own only provided troops in the next war on the understanding that they remained under our own national command and we're not just there to top up the British forces.

Thank you very much for a very good video. There is one further site you could have included. At one time, I understand, it was intended that TEL should have a tomb in St Paul's. Obviously this idea was stopped by someone pretty high up. The tomb was to have an effigy of TEL in white marble laying in full Arab dress. The full size model for this effigy is now in the little chuch in Wareham and is a stunning sight. The church is on high ground to the left as you enter Wareham from the north. Also keep an eye out for TEL's 'favourite seat' in the bar of the Anglebury House Hotel. Thank you again for the video.

Had he not joined the army in WW1 or if WW1 never happened he would very probably have become an academic. That's hindsight; he sought anonymity in the 1920s and joined the RAF under a different name. If he hadn't been killed in a motorcycle accident he may well have become involved in WW2 in some capacity.

My father William Henry (Harry ) Finlayson joined the Royal Tank Corps (as it was then) in 1934. Clouds Hill was in a wooded area prone to forest fires. If a fire broke out troopers from the nearby Bovington camp would be sent to fight it. On such an occasion Harry was one of the fire party and had to go to Clouds Hill and ask Laurence if they could use the water from his 'swimming pool' - in practice a large water tank over the road which Laurence used to swim in. At the time Laurence was in the Tank Corps based at Bovington as an admin officer, a little unassuming man he described him as. Harry went on to see distinguished military service on the North West Frontier, France and North Africa. He was taken prisoner and spent four years in prison camps, including Auschwitz. He passed in 2013 aged 98. Last year I visited Clouds Hill and Bovington Tank Museum, a world class venue. I saw the David Lean film aged 10 and read Seven Pillars of Wisdom at 14, Laurence has been a lifelong interest. Thanks for producing this video and reminding us.

The road from Bovington Army Camp to the crossroads just past Lawrences house was 'straightened' as the Americans eeded to park up hundreds of different types of vehicles that would be taking part in the D Day invasion. The road was very bendy and windy, by straightening it they were able to park many more vehicles, and it was much safer for vehicles to travel along it.

I think ''rubbish'' is a bit harsh - Unproven, perhaps. Corporal Catchpole was not the only person to see the mysterious black car. I read in a more recent book that Catchpole was actually one of a group of five other servicemen who saw the car. Rather than calling all five at the inquiry to give statements, Catchpole was elected to be their spokesman. Catchpole committed suicide a few years later while still in the army, for no apparent reason. He was also described by an army friend as being ''scrupulously honest and truthful, and not prone to fantasy.''

The war was won by the armies,usually 7-8 times bigger than that of the Turkish, he just helped the British buy the Arabs with gold and silver so that they did not fight for the Turkish but against them, details of which are available in the British archives in Kew, there was a documentary on the BBC years ago in which they followed on his footsteps based on his war diaries and they concluded that the events he told in his diaries would have been impossible to achieve physically and that he made them up including his story that he was raped by the Turkish commander, as it was alleged that he was gay and he had an infatuation for Arab men, I am sure the BBC still have a copy of their documentary from 15-20 years ago and perhaps if there was enough interest, they might reshow it.but thank you for the video, it is always very moving to visit their final resting place regardless.

Great video, thanks. But, Lawrence was all in on the plan to carve up the Middle East. He openly admits this his writings. The movie has him openly opposing this move, but it's fiction to make the movie more tense and interesting. And, it does. Also, the fact that he never left the military shows his support.
@andrewlewis89852 жыл бұрын
You dont know what you are talking about. His plan wasnt to carve up the Mid East, he had a much better plan which was rejected. Being in the military by no means implies anything, lots of people served in the military were sympathetic to the Arabs. But if you knew anything about Lawrence, then you would know his motivations for re-enlisting.

David Lynch: You are absolutely wrong. I’ve read everything Lawrence wrote that has been made public, including his letters to his mother, friends, and politicians.
