I attended a Peter, Paul and Mary concert in Sydney, Australia in 1964. I waited around afterwards in case I could get a glimpse of my favourite folk group. Peter came out and was mingling with fans so I was able to get his autograph, but because fans were surrounding him, they didn’t notice Mary sneak out and quickly move toward a waiting taxi. I rushed over to her and asked for her autograph. She declined saying she had a bad cold and just wanted to get back to her hotel. I was devastated and it must have shown on my face because she hesitated and then bent down and kissed me on my left cheek. I was gobsmacked . . . Mary Travers kissed my cheek . . . I was on cloud nine. Here I was, an impressionable 13 year old getting something better than an autograph . . . a kiss from Mary Travers. I’m decades older than I was then, but I’ve never forgotten that treasured experience. I also never imagined then, that I’d hear my grandchildren singing Peter, Paul and Mary songs . . . another wonderful experience.

Back in 1998, I also remember going to my regular hair salon in Bethel, CT and I was getting my hair cut and then this very large woman (Mary was not petite in any sense of the word… she stood about 5’10”) sat down in the next station. When I was young, I taped all of PP&M's songs so that I could work up fourth harmonies to become Peter, Paul, Mary and Bill, a fantasy and, as with men boys my age, an imagined love affair with Mary. 20 years later as an art gallery director in Wales I rented a car and picked up Mary from a town in the Welsh valleys where she's been performing as a solo act (a club in which Tom Jones also used to perform) and drove her to London. Her one stipulation was that we not sing (really the thing I most wanted us to do together, sigh). In London, we visited the Tate Gallery to see some art. As I was looking at one painting and she another on a different wall, she drifted closer to me until she rested her chin on my head and we stood there pressed together looking at separate paintings for a long time. Until that moment I hadn't realized how tall she was (or how to let go of our not being able to sing together). Thank you for showing her grave.
