My previous video about Sam • The Death Of Sam Kinis...
Excerpts from the final sermon taken from TheSwillMan KZbin channel • Sam Kinison - The Last...
Sam Kinison was a popular stand-up comedian from Yakima, Washington, mainly active in the 1980s and the early 1990s. He also had a few acting roles in film and television. His only recurring role was that of Hugh, the main character's alter ego in the short-lived sitcom "Charlie Hoover" (1991). The series only lasted 7 episodes. Kinison had previously worked as a Pentecostal preacher, and his comedy routine incorporated sudden tirades and distinctive screams in the style of charismatic preachers. Kinison was noted for a tendency to use black comedy, and to often satirize Christian evangelist scandals.
In 1956, Kinison was accidentally hit by a truck. He survived the accident, but suffered brain damage. His childhood was otherwise uneventful until 1964, when his parents divorced. Marie gained custody over Kinison, despite the boy's protestations. Kinison decided to follow in his father's footstep's, training to become a preacher.
From 1968 to 1969, Kinison attended the "Pinecrest Bible Training Center", an unaccredited bible school located in Salisbury Center, New York. From 1970 to 1977, Kinison was employed as a preacher. He reportedly used a typical "fire and brimstone" style in his sermons, punctuated with shouting. Like his father, Kinison earned a meager income and struggled with poverty.
Deciding to change his career path and become a comedian, Kinison moved to Houston, Texas. He found work at the Houston-based comedy club "Comedy Workshop" (1978-early 1990s).
In 1980, Kinison decided to move to Los Angeles. He wanted to be hired by the West Hollywood-located comedy club "The Comedy Store" (1972-), where young comedians received press exposure and had a shot of appearing in HBO's "Young Comedians" television specials.
Kinison was initially hired as a doorman by "The Comedy Store", but eventually started performing as a comedian again. While struggling to find work, Kinnison reportedly developed addictions to both cocaine and alcohol. He hired his brother Bill as his manager.
Kinison's big break came when he was chosen as one of 8 performers in the "The 9th Annual Young Comedians Special" (1985). Most of the featured performers failed to impress the critics of the day, but Kinison won praise for voicing the frustrations of a typical married man in his routine. Kinison was next featured as a guest on the talk show "Late Night with David Letterman", and was cast in a supporting role in the comedy film "Back to School".
Kinison was at the height of his popularity by 1989. He was cast in the role of an angel in an episode of then-popular sitcom "Married... with Children" (1987-1997). In 1990, he had a role in the horror anthology series "Tales from the Crypt" (1989-1996). In 1991, he had a co-starring role in the sitcom "Charlie Hoover" (1991). The series' premise was that Charlie was a depressed, middle-aged office worker who is confronted by his own alter ego, who convinces him to turn his life around.
Having divorced twice, on April 4, 1992 Kinison married his long-time girlfriend Malika Souiri. She worked as a dancer. Following the wedding, the couple vacationed in Hawaii for 5 days. They returned to Los Angeles on April 10, as Kinison had to prepare for a performance at the Riverside Resort Hotel and Casino of Laughlin, Nevada. Later that day, Kinison's Pontiac Trans Am was "struck head-on" by a pick-up truck. The driver of the other vehicle was an inebriated 17-year-old boy.
Kinnison was found dead at the scene, with his head having smashed his car's windshield. At the time of the accident, Kinnison was not wearing his seat belt. He was 38-years-old at the the time of his death. His wife was also injured at the accident, but was able to recovered at a hospital. The driver responsible for the death pled guilty to charges of "vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence". He was sentenced to a single year of probation and 300 hours of community service.
Kinison was buried in a family grave plot at Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1993, archival footage of him was used for the television special "A Tribute to Sam Kinison". Kinnison's brother Bill wrote a biography of him, called "Brother Sam: The Short, Spectacular Life of Sam Kinison". Despite a relatively short career, Kinnison has been fondly remembered. He has been cited as an influence by other comedians.

R.I.P. I had the privilege of seeing him on the stage with a group of Army buddies in 83' at The Comedy Corner in Colorado Springs, CO. It was before he was really famous. That night he was in the company of Roseanne Barr, Bobcat Golthwait, Louie Anderson, Tim Allen, Andrew Dice Clay, Sinbad and some others whose names escape me. Sam and Roseanne were standing near the rear door and I had some brief parting praise for them. Sam chatted briefly with me and asked if I enjoyed the show. The funniest time I ever had. That's still true and it's 2024! What luck for a $5 Cover charge and we sat stageside at a table!

I always remember Sam Kinison in the "Married With Children" Christmas episode, "It's A Bundyful Life," where he plays Al Bundy's guardian angel & tries to convince him that life is worth living. Instead, he ends up showing him that life for his wife & kids would be far better without him.

Scott, thanks for doing this video. Very well done. Many years later, still sending thoughts and prayers to his family. I saw Sam Kinison in a VERY small comedy club in Colorado Springs just before he hit BIG time. Everywhere in the club, there were notices that this guy was pretty raunchy and that no refunds would be given. There were flyers on the tables of the club. There were announcements a few times before he came on that he might be offensive to some. I thought it was pretty overboard, but when he came on stage.....WOW. So many people walked out in spite of the warnings. Oh well- my friend and I stayed, and we saw one heck of a show from him, along with an audience of about maybe 25-30 at that point. What a great memory. Rest in peace, Sam Kinison.

Day of death (again not including year...April 10) is the same as Stuart Sutcliffe's death (an original Beatle and Lennon's best friend) as well as April 10 being my birth date. I have Sam's final serman on cd as well as others. I was just thinking about making another trip to Tulsa to see him, aunt Florence (his mom), Kevin and Richard. Growing up we attended the church they had in East Peoria Illinois, we would often get into trouble because we would stay downstairs and play while the main service was going on and if we got to loud aunt Florence would come down and tell us we were all going to end up in the front row if we didin't quiet down lol.. I lived in Rockford IL. for most of my life and for the past 6 years in Peoria I just loved him so much. bk then he just got caught up in the world wind of music and the fame and so on and in many ways lost sight of who he was. Tbh who doesn't, so many musicians then lost their lives because of their lifestyle; the easy access to so many things. Deep down Sam as funny and brilliant he was at all he did, he still tried to keep God in his heart, it was sad he died in a car crash right after finding the love of his life. He was a gift to all who loved him, and his memory will still live on as always R.I.P Sam♥♥ Thank you Scott for another awesome video♥

Gone way to soon. I remember how shocked I was when he died. I’d never heard audio of his preaching before. Wow, I’m not religious by any means but his voice was very moving. So hard to believe he was so so young!!! He seemed older then his years.

Scott this was so cool. Never heard the audio of Sam preaching, that was really wild. A tragic end to his life. Loved how you brought the stone from the church to his grave. You're a class act! ❤️

Well you did it again, my friend. Now I'm going to have to go look up more information and other videos and performances,. etc. on Sam Kinison. Such a wonderful video here. Damn fine job. Haven't thought about this cat in a long time and never knew much about him either. Totally loved the Back to School bit he did! Didn't know who he was back then, but loved it all the same. Your presentation here is quite respectful and most stellar. Thank you for including his final sermon excerpts. Oh boy, makes a person think. Never knew the Tulsa link....or the info about his family being all preachers, etc. Anyway - what I'm getting at - because of your excellent video here, I want to go and learn more about Mr. Kinison, your subject matter here. I've gone on too long. Until the next one.....Take care.
