So, as was shown by "Hugh Boone", a very unrealistic and prominent facial feature might be as well a disguise, and upon removing it, the real face becomes a disguise on its own. Now we know how Luke Atmey was able to fit his nose under the mask without poking a hole in it. The nose was fake, and as an Ace Detective he was, Luke was wearing a disguise all this time to fool everyone around. Truly a genius.

This requires a very good memory. During the very first chapter of Investigation, remember a strange woman paid a visit to Sholmes regarding her missing husband? She also disclosed his occupation: prison warden. From this point onwards, clues are increasingly subtle.
