I cannot work while this is playing. When Dr. Howlett begins speaking, reading these wonderful epitaphs and inscriptions, I can't turn away. Thank you for all your work in showing that my ancestors were not idiots and fools living a hand to mouth existence as contemporary history would have us believe. Lack of governance often produces a renaissance in art and literature and learning. Just as the Black Plague produced the Renaissance of the 14th Century, the absence of centralized government after the fall of Rome allowed people to pursue their own passions. Now, if I can only convince my fellow Americans...

Totally! That was the last thing I was expecting to see from that period! There are many kinds of sophisticated arts, and not are all visual. Some are verbal (and musical, dance, culinary, oragami) which tend to disappear soon after they're made. Historians have forgotten that old research axiom for a long time now: "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence." We hadn't found the evidence, but that is not evidence that a high civilization was not there.

Mona E. - I now understand the passion in your comments here and wish you had stated something of the source of your stance. Until today I knew nothing of the work of Wilson and Blackett despite my lifelong obsession with 'Arthur". I am now engaged in understanding more of their work and would like to know more of how you stand on this issue, please.

You may be rather disappointed to find that *Wilson & Blackett* are ploughing a lonely furrow. They won't show anyone their research but simply expect people to take their word. Their books are published by a vanity publisher (they own one). They have used an invented *_pre-Gaelic_* language, _Coelbren Y Beirdd,_ faked physical evidence and, despite the hype, *Alan Wilson* is not a well-respected historian while *_Baram_** Blackett,* _alias _*_Brian Terry_*_ inter alia,_ is at best a dilettante. They have offered no evidence for peer review, they simply say that they're right and that anyone who disagrees with them must therefore be wrong. They have also probably damaged good archæological sites that they refuse to identify to _real_ archæologists. The second of their _Kings Arthur_ is apparently pure invention while the other is actually two real *Welsh* Princes, *Anthun* and *Annun Du* , concatenated and renamed. Obviously there must be a global conspiracy against them. 😉 If you want to know more about both the legend and the possible reality of _Arthur_ read *Leslie Alcock’s* book *_Arthur’s Britain_* - but it must be his final edition. *Alcock* was a superb archæologist who fervently believed in an historical _Arthur._ The legend of _King Arthur_ is far more important than faking his historical existence. He _may_ be real and he _may_ not. beechwood44.wordpress.com/2007/08/27/wilson-and-blackett-for-beginners/ (this seemed to have vanished and the links to www.newcastle.gov.uk are now out-of-date but all of the pages are probably still available at the Wayback Machine) www.badarchaeology.com/controversies/looking-for-king-arthur/the-archaeology-of-arthur/ (this is current at 19/02/2020) There are many other I'Net pages about *Wilson & Blackett* but _proper_ open-minded archæologists' comments never, *_never_* support them. They are only supported by unqualified people who have been convinced by their claims of a _conspiracy_ against them. Shortly after posting this comment I edited it but the only thing I changed was the reference to _Coelbren Y Beirdd._ I actually knew that this was actually invented by *Edward Williams* but I had momentarily forgotten it. _Mea culpa._

I love this doc, and learning about this mysterious piece of history. Very well done, but look at the title. I was looking for a doc on the Romans taking over Britain (except Caledonia, right?). I mean their beginning, and some link to Arthurian legends. But this video is all about what happened after the Romans left, with occasional speculation about Arthur. It was a pleasant surprise for me though, because I do like to learn about the so-called dark ages. Titles are just a pet peeve for me.

Not a hostile invasion? Julius Caesar cut down a mile-wide swath across the sacred forests in order to devastate the Druids. He fought all the tribes and won, but thought one tribe would make trouble in the future. So he amputated both hands of every man in the tribe and sent them begging. The logistics of this are in his records. 5 minutes per man, chop and cauterize. On his return to Rome, he threw the rings down in the Senate and proclaimed, "I give you Britain." All this is recorded, but not a word about it here.

Arthur is not mentioned by Gildas or Bede, and Arthur’s story is not narrated by Nennius, Malmsbury (1st chronicle), and Huntingdon, and was mocked by Newburgh. Arthur’s story only arrived in 1135, when Crusaders and Templars arrived back from the First Crusade, and this story was narrated by Monmouth and Oxford. So who was King Arthur? The clue is that the Round Table was modelled on the Last Supper table (see book: Merlin Grail). So King Arthur and his twelve knights of the round table, are synonymous with King Jesus and his twelve disciples of the round last supper table. And the table itself was modelled upon the Jewish zodiac at Hamat Teverya on the Sea of Galilee, and its twelve constellations. In addition, many of the early manuscripts say that Arthurian legend was written by Josephus Flavius - which has caused a great deal of head-scratching. So what is the answer to all this? In reality, the Crusaders brought home the secular history of Jesus. But since this story was highly heretical, they formulated this story into Arthurian legend. The uncomfortable truth is that King Arthur was King Jesus. See book ‘The Grail Cypher’. www.amazon.co.uk/Grail-Cypher-secrets-Arthurian-revealed-ebook/dp/B0152BGX7A Ralph

I think in Britain, maybe it wasn't so much a dark age because the British never were all that big on the Romans being there. Sure, they had Roman towns and cities. But the British never did embrace the Roman way of life and culture, so when they left, it was more like "good riddance." Whereas in mainland Europe, like France and other places, the Roman society, cities, roads, infrastructure, government, etc. had been adopted and become the norm for centuries. So when it crumbled, it was like "oh no, what's happening! What do we do?" But again, in Britain, they were more like, "good, they're finally leaving. We never wanted them here to begin with."
@harryzero1566

Roman administration may have left Britain, but not necessarily all the 'Romans' When Rome expanded its empire it encorporated many of the populations into its legions. A legion raised in Spain would campaign in another territory, and the nationalities were also likely mixed up. When Rome decided we're leaving, many individuals probably decided they liked being where they were. Maybe many felt, they didn't fancy a long trip to the Mediterranean. Very few historians explain why the warlike Vikings never managed to subdue early pre Saxon Britain. Maybe it was because the ingrained post Roman militaristic psyche of the defenders made a aggressive dominance impossible to achieve. Some where between the Roman exit and a unifying King Alfred, a regional 'King Arthur' existed that became romanticised, as being noble and chivalrous. For example, legendary images of knights in shining plate armour like those jousting and in battle hundreds of years later conjure up maidens in distress scenarios. The reality probably being, not very different battle dress to the roman legions. Maybe these hardened stay behind 'warriors' did go forth rescuing maidens, after all the vikings were into whoreticulture and had a deflowering reputation of said maidens.

Oh dear! _King Arthur_ may have existed but even *Leslie Alcock,* a fine archaeologist, could find exactly no record in any archaeological source and the documentary sources are very non-specific except for those of the monk *Nennius* who probably had a political axe to grind (and his references are probably gleaned from the works of an earlier monk, *Gildas the Wise,* who _doesn't_ mention _Arthur_ ). No contemporary or early reference to the *Battle of Badon Hill* actually mentions any _Arthur_ though centuries later he was said to be one of the key warriors. *Alcock* believed in the legend of _King Arthur_ and was assiduous in trying to find evidence of his existence. After many years he changed his mind and simply believed that a successful warrior had been shanghaied to the legend. There were warrior _kings_ (princes, chiefs, etc.) in all parts of *England* and *Wales* and any of these might have inspired the legend but the truth is that the evidence of _Arthur_ 's existence is nowhere to be found. It's quite possible that such evidence may be found but most archaeologists and historians doubt it. It is simply that very few contemporary (or near) documentary sources exist and, at the time, most artefacts that weren't metal were made of biodegradable material that has simply rotted (that's why it's called *_The Dark Ages_* - there are very few written records). As for distinguishing between the *Welsh* and the *Britons* it's far too simplistic to say that they're simply the same. By that token you could say that the *Bretons* fall into the same category as their language, and in some cases even their DNA, are closely related. The actual truth is that there was no *Wales,* no *England,* no *Ireland,* no *Scotland* and no *France* _but_ the societies in all those areas were related - the languages all spoke at the time prove that. All of this can probably be found on Wikipedia. *Anthony Price* wrote an extremely entertaining espionage thriller called *_Our Man In Camelot_* which revolves about *Badon Hill* - it's well worth reading. 🍻 I quite understand that many find *Francis Pryor* difficult and some dislike him _but_ he is a respected and knowledgeable archaeologist. His contributions to 20th/21st century archaeology are highly respected. I'm quite certain that I posted this in reply to another post, probably by a *Wilson & Blackett* believer, but it seems that that post has been deleted while mine has been kept. I don't mind, I just want to keep things in perspective.

The cup is the New Testament symbol of the blood of Jesus, spilled to atone for the sins of mankind against God the Almighty Creator. The sword is a New Testament symbol of the Bible, and also of the Holy Spirit. The stone is the rock, which, in the New Testament, is a symbol of the Gospel (that our sin (imperfections) separated us from God, but through Christ's perfect life, which he sacrificed for us, we can be brought back to a right relationship with our Creator, by accepting Christ as God, our Lord and Savior). The Cross, of course, is the symbol of the Gospel as well, and of God's great love for mankind. The water, of course, is the water of life, living water, which is a symbol of Christ, giver of life eternal. The rose is not Christian per se, but was understood by Catholics to symbolize Mary, mother of Jesus, and sometimes even Jesus as an infant (again, not biblical, but part of Roman Catholic tradition). Nature symbolizes God, the Creator. Nature is stressed in the New Testament as proof of God, the Creator. This is precisely how those who wrote of these symbols would have understood them. We can see symbols through our own contexts, but to fully understand the meaning of symbols when used by others, it's important to understand the context of the others who used the symbols. Those symbols are all Christian symbols, Christianity is the context of those symbols, and that is how they would have been understood. King Arthur, like Lord of the Rings and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, all point to Christ and Christianity. To fully understand and appreciate them, we must understand this Christian context as their matrix.

For the myth of the water goddess (and Mary), leading to Arthur, think of Pressyne and Melusine. Here, you will find Avalon, and it is nowhere near Britain. I believe the myth came to you from Brittany or Normandy. "Raymond of Poitou came across Melusine in a forest of Coulombiers in Poitou in France, and proposed marriage. Just as her mother had done, she laid a condition: that he must never enter her chamber on a Saturday. He broke the promise and saw her in the form of a part-woman, part-serpent, but she forgave him. When, during a disagreement, he called her a "serpent" in front of his court, she assumed the form of a dragon, provided him with two magic rings, and flew off, never to return." The serpent is the ancient symbol of knowledge. This goddess has had many names, and Robespierre dedicated his Cult of the Supreme Being to Minerva, essentially the same goddess. The myth of the goddess of wisdom is ancient, and it can be traced back to Ishtar, if not before. Ishtar, and her owls, unlocks the door to it all. Never think of the pagan gods and goddesses as pure myth, but myths that were generated around ancient kings and queens going back to the 3rd millennium BC and before. Think of the R1b haplotype people that migrated west and replaced the ancient Europeans.

@Antifederalist Thank you. It's been a while since I researched this, as it has to do with the royals and nobles claim of being kin to a mermaid, which is based on some fact, along with myth. It goes back to the marriage of King Baldwin II to Morphia of Melitene . She was the daughter of an Armenian nobleman named Gabriel. They had a child, named Melisende, Queen of Jerusalem. There is a story about Cyprus related to this, tied to these families, and I believe that this is where the tale of Avalon originates, via Melisende's son, Amalric I, and his second wife, Isabella I of Jerusalem, which led to Melisende of Lusignan's birth. In other words, Avalon was Cyprus. The original Queen Melisende of Jerusalem, was known for a library, and knowledge, thus, the serpent.. Raymond of Poitiers, in the myth, was the Prince of Antioch from 1136 to 1149, during the time of this history. "Following the death of Prince Bohemund II of Antioch in 1130, the principality came under the regency first of King Baldwin II (1130-31), then King Fulk (1131-35), and finally Princess Alice (1135-36), Bohemond's widow. The reigning princess was Bohemond II's daughter, Constance (born 1127). Against the wishes of Alice, a marriage was arranged for Constance with Raymond, at the time staying in England, which he left only after the death of Henry I on 1 December 1135. "Upon hearing word that Raymond was going to pass through his lands in order to marry the princess of Antioch, King Roger II of Sicily ordered him arrested. By a series of subterfuges, Raymond passed through southern Italy and only arrived at Antioch after 19 April 1136. Patriarch Ralph of Domfront then convinced Alice that Raymond was there to marry her, whereupon she allowed him to enter Antioch (whose loyal garrison had refused him entry) and the patriarch married him to Constance. Alice then left the city, now under the control of Raymond and Ralph." I believe that Melusine of myth is Melisende. Alice of Antioch, was Queen Melisende's sister.

The Comet that hit Britain in A.D. 562 didn't help. The Welsh kept written records during this time and tell of King Arthur I fighting the Romans and King Arthur II fighting the Saxons, here and in Europe. King Arthur II died in A.D. 579 from wounds he received in battle...in America ! He ruled from Glamorgan (not Tintagel or Glastonbury) and claimed descent from The Holy Family who fled the Romans and arrived in the UK...
