The video begins with the statement, “The industrial economy, from agriculture to war, is by far the most violent the world has ever known”. I wholeheartedly agree with this point, and I think it is a perfect way to introduce Berry’s argument. To begin with, I agree that industrialization is incredibly destructive. Not only is large-scale industrialization harmful to the environment, it is also harmful to human health. The air pollution produced in large cities as a result of industry has been found to directly negatively affect human health. Additionally, pollution from cities also disrupts local environments causing harm to wildlife. This is seen across the world due to many forms of pollution. Air pollution can cause harmful weather phenomena such as smog and acid rain. Water pollution is also common in large cities. Water pollution harms local wildlife and increases risk of disease for those living within cities with contaminated water. When shifting perspective and looking at industrialization through a larger scale than just single cities, you can see that industry is destroying the entire Earth. Industrialization is currently tearing down the Amazon Rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest is one of the largest carbon sinks in the world, and if the rainforest continues to be destroyed, what is going to take its place in absorbing the carbon dioxide? Nothing will be able to take the Amazon’s place in protecting the Earth’s atmosphere, and if it becomes damaged enough, the health of Earth’s atmosphere will severely decline. I also agree with Berry that it is unfortunate that the economy and industry has such a control over people that it has influenced our way of life. It is hard to recognize because the industrialized lifestyle is something that I am so used to. Most of the time I don’t think about how each time I run errands, such as going to the grocery store, that I am buying into an unsustainable lifestyle. This makes me disappointed in myself and my society because being sustainable is something that I view with great importance, however I know that it is almost impossible to be a functioning member of society and be completely sustainable. I know many people try to care for the environment and put in their best efforts to be sustainable, and this is why I disagree with the way Berry relays some of his messages. The way Berry chooses to word his arguments comes off as harsh and disapproving towards the general public. I believe that if Berry were to direct his arguments towards people in positions of power in politics and industrialization his arguments would be much more effective. I believe this would be more effective because the people in power are the ones who can actually make changes to better our environment. Maybe then, when the general public read or hear of Berry’s arguments, they will take his ideas more seriously instead of writing them off because they wrongfully feel at blame.

And I argue with farmers claiming that they have a stake in this garbage. Regenerative agriculture is the only way forward.

If you're talking about regenerate animal agriculture, that uses even more land, more resources, and causes more emissions than any other form of agriculture.
@vivalaleta9 ай бұрын
@@deemstars No, I was debating grain growers. Anyway livestock has the advantage of eating cover crops in the winter which are primarily planted to nourish and protect the soil. Animals on the land leave urine and droppings which is a big bonus. What we're after is old fashioned farms growing both grain and livestock. The kind of meat you can get from an animal who has a varied diet and the run of the property (mob grazed) is top shelf.

@@vivalaleta That's just marketing from the animal ag industry. Not true at all.

@@deemstars What?? The ag industry does nothing of the sort. Listen, if you're vegan regenerative ag is still for you but it takes longer to see the result.

You're promoting an impossible dream. The only way for truly sustainable farming, is to abolish animal agriculture.

Sustainable farms steward animals to mimic natural ecosystem cycles. What sustainable ecosystem doesn’t have animals?
