Lake Missoula was a "lake"... many times over. And, of course, the water that filled the lake came from the north. This inflow of water reached a point where the ice wall collapsed, thus the floods were from lake Missoula. I find the questioning of whether it should be called a "lake" rather pedantic!

Glaciers - during the ice age much of the north of the globe's landmasses were covered in miles thick ice - assuming same would be true for the south (but I don't know as much about the south of the globe).
