The whole debate between Chainsaw Man and Dandadan anime adaptations never made sense to me because, at their core, these two shows are very different. Chainsaw Man is dark and gritty, which is why I prefer the approach the animation director took, though it can still have light hearted moments. On the other hand, Dandadan is more light hearted but can get dark through the way the backstories are presented, we’ll have to wait and see how that gets translated into the anime. Both shows have great adaptations, so wanting something different isn't necessarily a bad thing. But, it often comes across as ungrateful, especially considering there’s a world where Chainsaw Man could have received a poor adaptation

😞 Many People don’t like chainsawman just because of the animation. The direction is a big part of what made it so impressive. The Aki morning scene gets rightfully praised. It’s a look into how he operates, and his level of calm that is then distrupted by Denji and Powers presence. Something the manga didn’t manage to portray, but is vital to later developments he has with them. This is fantastic direction. And it was everywhere in the story. People complain about color but then conviniently leave out Denji vs eternity and it’s red hues, Aki approaching makima’s office with the dawn-lighting, Himeno and Denji in the bed with the vibrant blues, and much much more. And when it does come to the animation, it’s significantly better than “good”. It’s actual cinimatic quality almost constantly. The characters constantly have fluid realistic movements with impeccable lighting and I’ll be 100% with you, it looks MUCH better than what we’ve got with dadadan so far. Which has had good to average animation with a really iffy CG monster in episode 2. People don’t think those who complain about the CSM anime are just talking about animation. They think that they are nitpicking to death an adaptation that fired on all cylinders like almost no other. And then got the director fired for comments that weren’t even negative about anime. It’s actually mind boggling As you said, directing is more than just animation, and that’s why I don’t get the inability to appreciate all of CSM season 1’s incredible decisions, because it wasn’t over the top enough. When the manga puts heavy focus on the characters body language, a show-don’t-tell story style, and cinematic paneling. Something the anime captured perfectly. The events in CSM are batshit. It’s true. But they are often told in a very down to earth way. Sorry, this just annoys me to no end. Rant over

The only problem with that assessment is that DanDaDan takes heavy inspiration from “High Strangeness” and the communities that surround it as well so I think it’s intent already is to depict things that already have existed before. Honestly, people should look at animation as a medium more than looking at it simply as "TOP 10 MOST IMPRESSIVE MOMENTS IN ANIME". Animation as a medium has much more range than others do, and like other mediums, art direction can't really be compared because the art direction is in service to the story. I haven't watched all of the CSM anime, but there's obviously intent behind how they've adapted it, and I think it fits Fujimoto's storytelling very well.
@Infinite_Mortis

Damn people are actually complaining about quality being too good? Honestly, I think that the world of chainsaw Man in the anime did it perfectly because Fujimoto’s intention with this story was to create a world that was abysmal, and terrifying in the mundane. He took the trope of guns and gave us something to fear again with them. Other animes make guns seem so weak as shooters either miss the main character completely or just barely graze them. It helps to amplify those intimate moments and violent sections Plus, I just saw look back in theaters and absolutely loved the style choice in that film. It matches his artwork pretty damn closely. I think there is a beauty in his realistic approach with fantastical imagery.

The way I see it, Chainsaw's tone with the pacing, color palette, and the scenes they decided to focus on were not put to the best use for the story. Chainsaw Man starts out and is setup like a typical Shonen with a raunchy and crass edge. Denji's motivations are simple and direct. He fights so he can get the dream he wants, a simple life away from his past. The fights, the funny moments, the dialogue and character dynamics are important. This style lulls you into the dream that this is typical Shonen at its core. Then when the style starts to break, it hits that much harder. Power, Aki, Makima, Reze, All these moments happen later on and break the trajectory to tragedy. Chainsaw Man at the beginning isn't just dark and gritty, Denji's attitude puts a shine over it, an unstoppable pursuit for something to achieve, that's what makes it fun. Borderlands, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, These world are intensely sad and brutal to the common man but have a fun and colorful life when looking at it from our protagonist eyes, that is how I read Chainsawman. TLDR: CSM Anime was a good anime but a bad adaptation. The animation is good but the tone wasn't. Yes CSM is Gritty, No the film style wasn't a good choice because tragedy doesn't hit hard because you are expecting it from the tone they went with.

@@zaythalegend2997 yeah this guy was trying to claim that CSM should have been vibrant and happy because Denji had a positive attitude at the beginning or something, but that's totally delusional. After he gets picked up by Makima he's just following instructions until he settles on a new dream (trying to touch boobs). Saying the stuff about Denji needing to sell one of his nuts and being chopped up and thrown in a dumpster should be shown in a light/colorful way is totally nonsensical.

I believe you're right, as most of the tweets I seen lately think people are talking about the animation. In reality most of the criticism of the Chainsaw Man anime was rooted by Japanese audience during the airing, as they seemed to desire this more cartoony style like Bocchi or current example Dandadan and their extreme backlash led many to believe any criticism to be seen as ungrateful or unwarranted. Personally, before the studio was announced I was hoping for Trigger as I felt they could capture the vibes and wackiness of Chainsaw Man, but I was satisfied with season 1. I do think the color choice can be too mute at times and sometimes wish we got the more expressive ones like in the endings, but I respect the direction and the choice to pay homage to Fujimoto love of films. One thing I do feel is that the complete focus on the cinematic direction doesn't fully capture Chainsaw Man, but maybe I will be proven wrong once my favorite arc "Bomb Girl Arc" Movie releases.

idk, I really like how the current CSM is, it has so much realism in it's animations. There's not really much that we can stand to gain from it right now, but trust me, we will need it for the more serious and darker part of the story. Like the Makima and Reze mouse conversations or the snowball fight parts. It's my own opinion though, and they might screw the animation up in the future. In any case, it's a breath of fresh air to see animations like this instead of the usual cartoonish animations you can see in other animes. It really set them apart from the rest

The mute colors feel less like creative liberty and more like some sort of creative limitation. It reminds me of how weird Fairy Tail Season 2 was, although that was much more egregious with the dullness. I could understand the more slice-of-life, lo-fi, chill moments in CSM having the mute palette, but the action sequences definitely gotta have more bombastic colors to communicate the insanity more.

I adore the CSM adaptation, but I also love the manga and feel like the adaptation has a very different appeal in terms of visual aesthetic. I personally don't like that people shut down people's complaints about the show's adaptation decisions by saying "Fujimoto likes movies, so it's a perfect for the show to look like a movie." I completely agree with that phrase alone, but it implies that the "movie look" is a very specific form of cinematic realism, even though the show can look cinematic in many different ways. Just looking at the movies referenced in CSM's intro, and any other films that inspired Fujimoto can show you how diverse "cinematic" as an aesthetic could be, yet the show chooses to have clean character designs and a grounded, prestine visual quality. The environments may be dirty and highly detailed but the aesthetic is of a high quality modern drama, instead of the pulpy, grainy indie films that inspire Fujimoto's visuals and storytelling. Some people really out here thinking haters are mad because they only watch moe anime or something, but the people complaining are FANS of the MANGA. They just don't like how different the anime feels to reading the manga, and as someone who appreciates the differences but would ultimately prefer something more faithful, I can't blame them for they're disappointment. I ALSO hate how salty adaptation haters compare the CSM anime to every new show that comes out. I think it's fair for people to point out how other adaptations are more successful in adapting the appeal of their source material than CSM, but the phrase "tHiS iS wHaT cSm ShOuLd'Ve LoOkEd LiKe" is annoying. DanDaDan is what DanDaDan should've looked like. JJK S2 is what JJK S2 should've looked like. Bocchi The Rock is what Bocchi The Rock should've looked like. Just because CSM doesn't perfectly fit the manga's appeal doesn't mean it would be better for it to replicate the look of these other shows.

@@Xaellez @Xaellez He said that recreating the style he used for the manga would make a "wrong or uncool impression" on film. You're right that he said he wanted something completely different from the manga, but he didn't say there would "be no point" in being faithful in it's adaptation choices. He's just okay with the staff doing their own thing. Adapting something is always transformative, even if you try your best to be accurate to the original, so trying to adapt Chainsaw Man to reflect its influences would still be different from the manga while being faithful. And no two directors, even if they're taking the same approach, would do it the same since everyone has their differences. Fujimoto's manga are inspired by films, but the adaptation doesn't reflect the films the manga is inspired by, instead going for a palatable, ambitious cinematic quality, which disappointed fans.

What you're saying here doesn't really make any sense. I honestly don't get the hate for CSM s1. Fujimoto's paneling has such a filmic energy to it, especially the use of repeat frames and the subtle character moments it lingers on. His lineart aswell translates way more into a more rough feeling compared his cover art, and I honestly think having the openings and endings in those wacky artstyles and the show in this more grounded style is the most faithful translation of how reading CSM feels. Hearing people say it's unfaithful to the manga gives a bad taste in my mouth. There is some wackiness that's toned down in the anime, but translating that into the adaptation would lead to a show that loses out on the subtletly that I think is a quality more unique to CSM and Fujimoto. There's definetly stuff that can be improved upon for the next adaptations, but if they completely change course I think the show will be worse for it. The Power and Kobeni car scene just screams homage to Pulp fiction's car scene, and I think grouding the anime will actually accentuate the absurdity of it.

Ngl the cinematic look of chainsaw man's anime is one of the main things I love about the adaptation. Idk it just has a certain vibe that scratches an itch in my brain real good. And I love that the characters don't really feel like anime characters and more like real people if you get what I mean. Like the way they act and move. But that's just how I feel about it

The only thing I don’t like about the CSM adaptation is that they only made 12 episodes, which I think worked against it because, in my opinion, CSM starts to differ from a basic shonen manga at the beginning of the Reze arc, where it really sets up the true intrigue of Chainsaw Man. JJK, for example, couldnt be the hit that it was if they didnt adapted 24 episodes

i think it makes perfect sense to contrast the two shows because both manga have very detailed drawing and unconventional visual design but their respective adaptations take completely opposite approaches to translating that into animation. chainsaw man focuses on bringing that detailed drawing directly to the screen with very ambitious cinematic direction, but as a result a lot of the animation work came out looking rather stiff and unpolished (the aki morning scene is a great example of this, despite the detailed artwork and fluid movement the character acting is very floaty and robotic with little sense of weight or momentum to it) while dandadan simplifies its character artwork and mostly sticks to standard framerates (which drew a lot of ire from fans before the series started airing) in order to maintain more expressive and weighty character acting throughout each episode (or at least thats what weve seen so far, obviously were only a couple of episodes in). i think chainsaw mans approach is generally more appealing to the average viewer i.e. someone who knows that more detail and more movement generally means better animation but doesnt have enough technical knowledge to scrutinize it beyond that, while dandadans approach might alienate these same viewers despite seeming to appeal more to animation buffs and critics who have a more solid sense of what appeals to them. i definitely find myself in the latter camp despite being a huge chainsaw man fan and caring very little about dandadan so i think its fun to pick apart why exactly that is.

I think that the animation *direction* of Chainsaw man was chosen while thinking far into the future of the series. As you noted, Fujimoto tries to channel cinematic influences through his work, and the manga shows this by being a lot less cartoony than it's contemporaries. Especially later on in the series, it's supposed to be rather slower, bleak, and realistic, with many chapters just showing urban decay, Denji and Asa in an urban hellscape that's impossibly large and yet cannibalizing itself at the same time. I don't think that the style and colors should be turned up, its a very deliberate choice keeping in mind the later events of the series, which starts to lean more into horror and slower moments as it goes on. I genuinely can't think of another way that Fujimoto's inspirations and the story could be visually told than the realistic filmic style they went with.

CSM and Dandadan, just their manga, have totally different tones. CSM is super dark and gritty while Dandadan has a much more fun/wholesome vibe between the main characters. Dandadan's art-style changes depending on the tone in the panel (more cartoony in 'joke' panels, more 'badass' in 'fight' panels) The bright colors for CSM the volume covers doesn't mean the whole anime should be in pastels, the coloring inside the colored volumes was more muted, and anyway Fujimoto didn't do the coloring himself. There also WAS lots of use of color, so for example the cool blues in Himeno's apartment. CSM trying to be 'cinematic' was a tribute to Fumimoto's love of cinema, it wasn't just something they randomly decided to do to be cool. I feel like Japanese people just don't like the more realistic vibe, whereas people in the west mostly did like the realistic vibe.

@funsnake4705
@funsnake4705 3 ай бұрын
I really wanted it to be all animated too. Based on the date you commented, you must be on episode 3. I also agree that the first episode, with the serpos, will be better being animated (shouldn’t be too much of a hassle to draw by hand). For episode 2, I personally don’t like the alien being CGI, it kills my immersion. If you have watched episode 4 (if not please skip), the piggy back ride scene I also hoped to be animated (I have no problem with serpo but this scene I REALLY wanted for it to be animated) 😔 For turbo granny + bound spirit chase. I think the CGI is warranted, since animating trains are insanely difficult, and thus in turn making drawing the yokais with the right perspective to match the 3D rendition of the train near impossible (it’s just very time consuming) I actually hoped Dandadan got the CSM budget lowkey 😅 Animated monsters probably go so hard

The main difference is that in Chainsaw man Fujimoto leverages a more realistic style to create further contrast between the absurdity of everything going on and the seriousness of the underlying point. Just look at his character expressions. Yes, they are exaggerated, but only as much as they are required to be to communicate a point in a still image. The anime took the same approach in terms of cinematography, color, and character animation. (Note that Chainsaw does a lot to appear visually interesting without wacky colors through its use of lighting) Dandadan is just raw absurdist. The characters never stick on model and the designs are goofy. It is striving for contrast, so the anime logically ups the absurdity through methods such as color

It's frustrating because you can't even really compare them. Chainsaw Man is a brutalist eldritch horror story with striking imagery and strange concepts that are meant to produce a certain feeling in the reader rather than be comprehensible. Dandadan is way more grounded and character focused, with less of Chainsaw Man's thought-provoking story, but with far more fleshed out characters and a more light-hearted tone. It's impossible to argue which story is better because they are completely different, and which story is more appealing depends entirely on the reader.

I think that arguments are lame as heck, and I'm really glad I don't interact with the anime fandom online. Look, I can understand the nuances of a conversation about adaptation being interesting but social media arguments almost always go nowhere. Personally, DanDaDan appeals to me more as a series (after getting into the anime, I binged the manga and caught up in less than a day because I couldn't get enough of that wild ride of a series). That being said, I'm not one to trash on people for their tastes. Just because Chainsaw Man isn't really to my taste doesn't mean I can't appreciate what it does, you know?

I think that the anime of chainsaw man is a perfect adaptation, with the cinematic feel. But, who watch anime don't want that, they watch anime because they don't want that, they want something diferent. That's the reason why the chainsaw man anime doesn't attract the fan's eyes, neither those who aren't fans. And even for those who are cinema fans, I think the events in the work are too eccentric for them, so I feel like it pleases practically no one, besides the author himself, and people who like anime and cinema.

Chainsawman and DanDaDan, are completly diferent, in manga and in anime. Chainsawman was launched in Weekly Shonnen Jump, so he has certain characteristics (in part 1) that's tie with where they was launched. Dandadan, is launched digitally, so this already makes a great difference. When bring these 2, to anime, the themes and history of Chainsawman, ties with the type of animation, direction they did it, you could like it or not, but works. Dandadan by his nature, dosen't will tie with Chsinsawman stylle, but the style they aproach is better to it not too dense history (that already show thst isn't just funny jokes and 2 teenagers going around). So, is possible to compare these 2 animes, but, isn't make sense because they are too different of each other
