Those teacher's comments were horrible. As someone who has never even thought of teaching and ended up with a language school and 140 students, I always encourage the joy as I want my students to have a different experience to what I had at achool (it was exactly the one like yours) and here in France it is also the same to my comprehension when we talk to our students, very academic, rigid and critical. I had the best results for both English and French learning when moving abroad or when finding native speakers/private teachers to talk to. You crying breaks my heart. Don't let a harsh person to stop you from your passion for Japanese. Love. Katerina

thank you for your comment Katerina! I’m really glad to hear that people like you are teaching now and can treat students well. :) i have had lots of fun learning languages and won’t let it stop me carrying on in the future 💪 it is great getting to connect with people and learn so much more about the world by speaking more than one language :)

As you get older, things accumulate the longer you live at one location, so it is good to look at your things and reduce what you don't need. Part of it is making a box or two for memories and thinking about what is special enough to add to it. I am 41 years old living on my own in a condo and I like to organize things every month to remember what I have and to throw away/recycle/donate whatever is not practical for me. My dad is a hoarder and that has made me more aware of my environment and my need to be tidy where everything has its place. I do get clutter, but it's not too bad to deal with. I think you are doing a great job building a habit where your surroundings won't stress you out (especially if you have to move).

I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone put into words the difficulties of education I have experienced myself. I am currently wrapping up my masters degree and proof reading my dissertation after a big gap after my undergrad. I’m 28 and sobbing like a little girl because it’s been gruelling. I got good marks during my module work but felt really unsupported during disso. I’m not even sure I’m better at my career path after it all. I hate how education ruins the joy of learning. Give it another go if it’s something you’d want to try and find a tutor who is supportive :)

thank you for your comment and i’m sorry that you could relate! I really hate the way the education system is set up as it as you say really ruins the joy of learning. i can’t wait to be free of it again next year 🥲 i definitely would love to carry on learning (anything) tho after i graduate hopefully with evening classes or a tutor in something if i can afford to do so :) learning is such an amazing thing i just wish the education system didn’t literally destroy any interests we have as children 🥲 good luck with your dissertation !

I relate to everything u said with connecting ur selfworth to education/ marks u get. It was me for so long, now i enjoy learning and educating myself on tooics i enjoy with the pace that is functional with my life and days (how chaotic they are)

Sometimes the very best gift you can give to yourself is the freedom of letting go of those negative memories, such as from language learning. Those notes (if they were the ones in question ) might be “useful” if you were to pick it up again, but not if they remind you of embarrassment, shame, judgment, failure. Letting go of them and starting with a fresh slate, welcoming back your initial love, without the association to those comments and the academic pressure, is such a wonderful gift. It took me years to adjust to that mode of thinking, but it’s been hugely freeing. In fact, I’m still struggling… WAY too long after flunking my post secondary passion… to reconnect with that passion without those associated feelings. But ditching the physical symbols of that time was cathartic once I’d done it. Great job carving out a new and fresh path forward! (Btw, I had no idea that Layton book existed! I need to look into it!! Is it an art book?? 👀)

you’re so right! holding onto stuff that actually represents something really negative prevents us from moving forward or from starting fresh :) i definitely felt so much better and more inspired to learn again after getting rid of them! it was like they were telling me how much i “should” know or how much time i had “wasted” but now i feel so much freer from that negative way of thinking about it. and yes! it’s an art book called the world of professor layton, it’s also got lots of stuff like interviews, storyboards, concept art etc :) i was lucky enough that i bought it right when it came out but i think its pretty hard to come by these days but if u do end up looking for it i wish you luck! i do love the book :)

I feel you on the books part. It’s hard to part ways because you’re like ooo well if I had a personal library or want to make one later then keeping the books makes sense. It’s hard to know which ones to keep for now and the ones to let go of in the moment

What you discussed about your language learning really resonated with me. I also developed an interest in japanese /japan as a young teen and was so excited to finally have the chance to learn it whilst at uni, only to have my interest ruined by that. It was so difficult trying to learn it around uni and then even more exhausting trying to learn it around working full time with a long commute, and progress was so slow and so....futile? I didn't really have any chance to use it and i was too shy to anyway. And no matter how much i studied i couldnt understand the Japanese music i was listening to or anything, in fact it was worse and confusing only knowing random bits. I realised that i am terrible at languages , including my own native english and that it was making me deeply unhappy and stressed, but after having spent so much time and money and being so initially enthusiastic it was hard to finally quit. I have only recently been able to enjoy the japanese music etc i used to love so much, without that feeling of failure looming over me. So much time and money down the drain 😞

hi, thank you for your comment! i’m sorry to hear that your experience was so stressful/painful. it is one of the most difficult languages for english speakers to learn so getting anywhere with it at all is an achievement so well done :) language learning is a difficult process and not linear at all, but i think we have an idea of it just being, well the more i study i will just be better and better and suddenly i will understand and be understood. it definitely doesn’t work that way as i found out myself :) i hope you can let go of the feeling that you “gave up”. i thought of it as that way for a long time too but i don’t think that something has to be for your whole life for it to have been meaningful. it started off as something genuine and pure, an interest you had and wanted to explore it. just because you’re no longer doing it doesn’t mean we didn’t get anything out of it! also it takes strength to realise something isn’t working out for you and stop doing it, whether that’s stop it for good or to come back to it later in life. recently i’ve been exploring japanese again and trying to remember what i really loved about learning it and the songs i used to listen to now there is no pressure for me to learn it to pass a test or write an essay. it’s much more freeing but i may still not pick it back up “officially” as it were, or i may do. i don’t know yet :) i’m grateful for the time i did have learning and it definitely brought me so much enjoyment in life and was my first real passion, but now i’m trying to chill a bit and not see my life as a list of things i need to “achieve”. i’m good enough as i am and it’s okay to waste money and time, in fact it’s never a waste and always teaches me something ! take care :)

I often watch video like this one, because I need encouragment to do this often in my own place cause I have lots of things that I like to collect, but sometimes it's just too much! And I'm attached to material things but as the time passed I was capable to get rid off a lot of them, and I try to contiue doing that at least one or two times (or more if needed) in the year! It helps me a lot!

I can definitely relate to that, I wanted to part ways with so much of this stuff before this but I think I needed more time :) Time definitely heals a lot ! now i felt much more able to let go of them

@@ivanfurber Yes, with more time we can be more decisive with what we possess and with what object we don't feel like to use anymore. I often second guess my objects if I want to give them or not and it's not easy to be sure of that. For example, the creative objects pencils, books, etc... Sometimes I can't decide if I will still use them or not because I'm a lazy person and I rarely get motivated to do drawing, scrapbooking, etc, but at times I like to do it, even if it's not as much as before, I still enjoy it.

thank you for sharing, im sorry about your experience!! i hate how academia takes all the joy out of something that we really value and love and the time. you’re so right to take a big break from it, ive definitely done that with languages and now after a few years i feel like i can start coming back to it. i really hope you are able to enjoy reading again now :) 💖

Seeing your heartbreak over learning Japanese, I hope you are one day able to approach it again and keep going. There are many people who should never become educators or leaders; bullying and belittling anyone in the learning process is unacceptable , in my opinion. Those are the kind of people with a power complex. The way you were treated is not a reflection of your ability or self-worth, it is a reflection of that person’s own shortcomings and motivations. Educators should nurture and uplift their students, always. Anyone can learn anything they put their mind to. Curiosity is a gift. 🩷
