The point of no return was her running over Myrtle and I find it extremely odd they never show her child. Daisy really loved him, but was afraid he would not accept her child. She felt safer with Tom and believed his bullshit about his old safe money. Yes, Gatsby lost his cool but that was only trying to show how they all were slightly delusional; Running around living double lives. Tom was a complete narcissistic asshole. He knew he was wrong and wanted to destroy their relationship and did it anyway he could. Just my opinion.

I got the impression that the look, in the book, was more like “oh crap. He’s on to me,” and not so much “does he know who he’s messing with?” I think this is supported by the fact that right after this he starts denying all the accusations, including accusations that weren’t even made, to daisy. Then Tom looks down on Gatsby and is like “I think he’s sorry now. I think he knows he’s nothing compared to me. Drive my wife home, like the little lunch friend you are,” and then Gatsby and Daisy run out the room as if Tom might change his mind and get angry again.
@jackierosas95935 жыл бұрын
Notice what really sets Gatsby off is that Tom does not see him as an equal. He has just as much money, if not more, and worked at it (however illegal that "work" may be)but it's not the right kind of money. It's new. It took effort Tom does not understand and never will, but Gatsby so wants to be one of them, to be viewed as classy and elegant among the best, the dream. Sadly, he never got there. Also, the sound of the fans in the background as a sign of Jay's escalating anger is really brilliant and unnerving.

Tom and Gatsby aren't so different. Tom knows this. He knows hes a brutal man with flaws and that his house is because he loves the fckin house so he bought it. He is honest with himself. Gatsby is just like the American Dream, a grandiose façade of itself that turns into a tiny shard of transparent glass when held up to the light.

yeah hes spoiled but that doesn't mean he cant fight lol he's even described in the book as having a large menacingly powerful body that has crippled people in sport. Gatsby on the other hand was in ww1 but they didn't teach hand to hand combat and shit they gave people old ass rifles and said "go dig your trench and stay alive". idk wtf that has to do with my comment though. funny how all you can see of tom is a spoiled brat. the genius of fitzgerald is he can make even a spoiled brat have good points and bad points, and even Gatsby too.

Finally, I'm watching this movie. And my biggest problem to understand: how such a strong and magnificent character (Gatsby) manage to trip in his major life battle? Why did he lose his temper? His qualities served him well to get through the war, build the wealth, etc., all that for the love, his obsession. Why a fuck it was important for him, that Daisy loved him and only him all the time? She was ready to escape with him, but he refused. So, what was really important for him: love or something else?
@dianecrow68874 жыл бұрын
He wanted things to be a certain way, he wouldn't accept things for what they actually were. That is what brought him to his doom. He didn't want Daisy to be his first love, he wanted to be her ONLY love and didn't want her to really live life to the full and have a life without him in it. He was living life according to a fantasy. He had this grand fantasy that he was a blue-blood and was someone who was just as good as Daisy's old money family. He wanted Daisy to go back to her family and he wanted to court her and wanted to marry her out of her family home. He wanted to go back into the past with himself in the role of being a man of means and status, not just an anonymous soldier who couldn't give her the lifestyle that someone like Tom could. He wanted to be in the place of Tom. He wanted to be one of the elite in his own right, as if he were born to the blue blood circles.
