You guys need to try a German Pink, it's less acidic and a little sweet, but has loads of flavor. It's indeterminate and will produce until late fall. Does well in our southern heat, they are an heirloom variety and are massive fruits. A slice completely covers a slice of bread.

Great show, as always, guys! I ain't getting blindfolded around you, Travis! Glad to hear you guys are going to start carrying silage tarps! Sand bags too, I'm sure! I feel a show coming on! I'm sure you'll bring this up and it will be in the product description, but folks can cut these tarps to size without any problem. They will not fray like woven fabrics, such as landscape fabric etc. Enjoyed the taste test!

Great Show Guys!! A couple of shows back Travis mentioned his frustration with BER Blossom End Rot and I think I heard him say that plant would be OK after the initial BER episode. I understand that BER primarily results from lack of calcium. Explain how and when to apply calcium and what form after transplanting with calcium under transplant. Greg has expressed issues with calcium availability to the plant.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 жыл бұрын
It's not necessarily a lack of calcium, although it can be, but more the uptake of calcium. In some cases you can have plenty of calcium in the soil, but the plant can't uptake it.

What external or environmental factors influence tomato flavors? It seems some years certain tomato plants taste better than others and others taste better other years. Is there an explanation for this?

@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 жыл бұрын
We had some ants in our hills too. Ants don't like heavy traffic areas, so if you keep hilling and cultivating between rows, that will keep them at a minimum. Spinosad will also take care of them. We try to harvest the potatoes before the ants get too bad.

I grew mortgage lifter last year and wasn't impressed with the flavor. You got ther order a bit mixed. Lol! Greg rated Sun Gold 4.5, Cherokee Purple 4.1, Jubilee 3.8, Amish Paste 3.2, then Mortgage Lifter @ 2.9. I really enjoyed watching this video. 😁 I have yet to try the Jubilee, but out of the other 4, my favorite is Cherokee Purple, then Sun Gold, followed Amish paste, & Mortgage Lifter. What's your opinion between Brickyard & Bella Rosa? I'm thinking about trying one of those for next fall. I already have this year's fall tomatoes started. They'll be going in the ground the first couple of weeks in July, depending on my work schedule. When do you start your fall garden? I'll be deciding what to plant & when this week. I'm gearing up a little early this year because it always sneaks up on me.

Sungold cherry tomato is a hybrid. Heirlooms are open pollinated enabling you to keep seed and it will breed true as long as bees don't cross pollinate them. If you save the seed from a hybrid, you will get a crap shoot of all the different parents of the hybrid. I had some volunteer Sungolds one year that were more of a yellow color. I spit out the fruit as it was terrible. One of it parents must have had some disease resistance or something but was inedible, yuck. There is an heirloom on the internet called Big Sungold. Is that what you grew ?
