Interestingly enough, the year after "War of the Worlds" came out there was a magazine serial published in 1898 entitled "Edison's Conquest of Mars" in which the eponymous American inventor uses captured Martian technology (and some new inventions such as space suits) to carry the war to the Red Planet. This video very much follows in the same vein by substituting victory over Martians for the First World War (while making good use of WW 1 war footage). It was great (especially the end twist)!

This was actually very good. It was not a silly "Grade B" documentary but had the stamp of a professionally produced documentary with very believable "eye witnesses" and experts. I can imagine the fun they had making this. I bet there were lots of funny out-takes where they start laughing while trying to act serious. Do not misunderstand my last sentence. The trench warfare of WW1 was inhuman and horrible beyond all reason. It was like Evil itself was manifested and wreaking Hell on everyone. But even war can sometimes have its own weird sense of humor. This is how many soldiers of all branches were able to cope with the horrors of what can happen to the human body....gotta have a way to mentally cope and escape, if just for a very short time.

Wow. What a great idea this was. The War of the Worlds concept, interpreted as a world war all countries are allies in. Real good job using WW1 footage. Must have taken a long time to sync up ideas with footage to form a story. Then, to also tie in the Spanish Flu idea was genius. The actors were really good, in that they used the subtle nuances of behavior and appeared unprepared to make statements, just as real people are, in real documentaries. What WOULD the world do? The idea that a north american native would be witness to the destruction of society is so reflective of what happened to his people when Europeans came. The final, cryptic warning of technological change was excellant. Well done!!

There is a subtle brilliance in the storytelling when we learn about the alien dying from a virus. If you know War of the Worlds, you know what the twist ending is and how the aliens are defeated. All throughout this, we've been presented with the events as if they are fact. However, when we learn about the virus, that's the first real moment that we can say "I know how this ends", which, if you're watching a dramatization of a historical event, is most likely the goal. Plus, the way it morphs into the Spanish Flu after the war is a spectacular spin. Bravo for this piece. Even if it's fake, it's a gripping story. I love it, and got so invested in the "eye witnesses" and their stories.

Great grandad was a cameraman for Lumiere Brothers France, and was able to record some of the black and white silent footage you see here from hiding spots with a clunky crank driven camera. Brother was a box and bag carrier for Operation Plum Duff, the explosive mine digging and placement plan used against the Heron. Cousin lied about his age and enlisted, but was figured out and used as a field HQ orderly for the remainder of the war, though he also served as a stretcher carrier and later a lorrie driver. The Magazine Fantasy & Science Fiction had a anniversary issue commemorating the first publication of Wells novel. Modern writers contributed short stories. Each story in the style of a famous writer of the era. There was the Jack London version about Martians in the Alaskan wilderness, the Teddy Roosevelt version, with the Rough Riders stalking Martians with Winchester rifles in the Cuban Jungles. A Jules Verne version had the Martians reaching Paris in the springtime. The male Tripod operators fall in love with the Eifel Tower thinking it a Martian female. The most fun I've read in any magazine issue.

Well Done! Unique Docos like this are true gems that often get "lost" as the sheer volume of material being added to KZbin and other sites as time goes by leaves many things Forgotten because they weren't remembered to begin with because they aired , maybe once or twice and to a small audience, making videos like these the proverbial needle in the haystack...with hardly anyone even looking for this and other needles to begin with...Thank you!

i am really impressed with how perfectly this emulates a history channel documentary. everyone not being interviewed speaks in a tone suggesting what they are saying is the most important thing ever said by anyone. its clear that the "important revelation" from the journal was just some trivial bit of information played up for attention and that all other information is cursory research in universe. really nailed it.

Though he rarely spoke of it, my grandfather fought it that war, the only thing that he would say was that the death and destruction was terrible. The devastation and loss of life was so bad, that the world just wanted to completely erase it from memory. Now today, most people aren't even aware that the Great Martian War even happened, some even learn of it and are shown the evidence, yet still deny it happened.
