During the Great Depression Franklin County in Virginia gained a reputation as the illegal moonshine capital of the world. At its peak, it seemed that the entire county was engaged in the production, distribution, promotion, and protection of shine, with estimates of 90 out of every 100 Franklin County residents with some connection to illegal whiskey.
Through the efforts of a federal agent and World War I spy, the whole enterprise was dealt a serious blow in a 1935 trial involving moonshiners, scores of deputies and the sheriff and even a grand-nephew of Robert E. Lee, who was a Commonwealth's Attorney.
