I always loved this scene. Ratigan always portrayed himself as a sophisticated, intelligent, calm villain, with the occasional outburst of anger, but now he’s had it. Gone full bestial. Definitely one of the underrated and under appreciated Disney movies. I know there’s be no point of a sequel without Ratigan, but I still would’ve loved to have seen one.

Something I like here is that Ratigon's goal has clearly changed from "use Olivia as a hostage to escape" to "Kill Basil at all costs", he shows no regard for his own life during this scene. When Ratigan and Basil are falling Basil tries to grab on to something while Ratigan drags him down, when they're falling together Ratigan looks at Basil and grabs him, even when he falls to his death he grabs Bails as a last effort to drag him down with him. Ratigan completely ignores the extremely dangerous situation he's in to just focus on Killing Basil, most villains would probably try to make a deal with Basil to get out of the situation alive and then try to kill him but not Ratigan. Ratigan is just out for blood in this scene.
@PixarShark4 ай бұрын
I love how they perfectly set up the danger for Basil in this scene. His strength has always been his intelligence. Ratigan has always tried to keep himself classy and meet him on that playing field, but here he snaps and you suddenly realize how PHYSICALLY outmatched Basil is in comparison to him. He’s so much smaller, Ratigan is on the no holds barred attack and you **know** he’s out to kill Basil. Basil’s smarts may not be enough to save him this time and you very much feel that throughout the scene.

I really like this climax as it honestly was a unique way they ended the battle. Even though Basil is pretty much helpless to stand a chance of fighting Ratigan it was really neat that the balloon didn't save him before the final wind up hit from Ratigan or catch him as he's falling like most Disney stories/other films would've done with the protagonist. This scene always stood out to me cause it was literally brains vs brawn and even while getting the shit beaten out of him and not getting saved by other characters he managed to hang onto the broken flying machine and win (which by the way I love how they paced the scene so it made it look like he was actually going to fall to his death). For me it's just a very smart and unique way they handled this scene and avoided cliches that most other films would've done.

This scene is one of those things why I love old Disney movies: save the villain moment for last. Those CGI was super new at the time. I can't help but laugh how Ratigan charged and dived straight at Basil like a hunting Eeveelution, on the edge! His scream, sounds like Ganondorf. But the shot of the part when the two fell or 1:59, look at the streets below. The real Big Ben (now called Elizabeth Tower) is only 315 ft high, but this made it look like its MILES high!
@Dragonrose363 жыл бұрын
Well, to a mouse, it is.

In proportion to the characters involved, it would be the equivalent of over a mile drop to a human. If we assume a height of 2 inches/5 cm for Basil, as opposed to a 5 foot/60 inch/150cm tall human, that would make the drop 30 times larger for him. 315 feet x 30 = 9,450 feet or approximately 1.79 miles/2.86 km!

We have domestic rats at home, and just to do them justice, they're the cutest things ever, cuddly and delicate, nothing to do with Ratigan! That being said, he's deliciously terrifying in this scene, just as are satisfying Basil's helpless expressions. The villain's shift from haughty and stylish to bestial and unleashed is striking at wish, but the passage for the hero from proud and defying to fearful and slumped in front of his enemy is also notably well done.
@zacariasdelalcazar88732 жыл бұрын
I've heard everyone who keeps domesticated rodents as pets say that they're nothing like feral rodents, which are hostile and disease-ridden. Throughout the movie, of course, they've made it clear that despite his façade, Ratigan is one of the latter, a SEWER RAT. The disparity is thus well-taken.

Something tells me this was the moment Disney’s fate was being determined. Basil of Baker Street would’ve been the last hero they’d have created, with Ratigan destroying him as an analogy for the studio sinking into despair given the failure of the Black Cauldron, following on from some financial shortcomings up to that point. They both fall to their doom, accounting for the darkness being overcome as Basil rises up and gives hope for the studio to push on, giving us the Renaissance that followed.

RIP to most of them. Barrie Ingham, Val Bettin, Candy Candido, Vincent Price and Alan Young who I just found out was the voice of Scrooge McDuck for a good while during the animated Disney era.

This Big Ben scene reminds one of the movie Spider Man (2014) where Peter Parker tries to save Gwen from the fall, after defeating the Green Goblin. Ratigan died similar to Gwen.

This scene to me always remained strongly in my mind as a child. It's sort of like we were seeing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Ratigan in the climax. I guess he finally lost it and was willing to do whatever it took to kill Basil.

2:08 Basil: [Visualizing his final fight with Ratigan; thinking] His advantage: My injury. My advantage: His rage [Ratigan attacks and grapple Basil, Basil breaks free, exchanging blows] Incoming assault feral... but experienced. Use his momentum to counter. [Basil starts to block and counter Ratigan punches and punches him in the face] Ratigan: [Visualizing the same fight with Basil; thinking] Come now, you really think you're the only one that can play this game? [Ratigan takes punch from Basil and locks his left arm while hitting Basil' injured right shoulder] Chop arm, target weakness. [Swings Basil into the opposite clock hand] Follow with haymaker. Basil: [Countering Ratigan's haymakers] Ah, there we find the boxing champion of Cambridge. [Punches Ratigan] Ratigan: Competent, but predictable. [Blocks and catches Basil's left arm] Now, allow me to reply [Blocks Basil's right punch and slashes his injured shoulder] Basil: Arsenal running dry, adjust strategy. [Basil tries to kick at Ratigan's feet, he counters, and starts to overpower Basil with fury claw slashes] Ratigan: [Uppercut slashes Basil closer to the clock hand edge] Wound taking its toll. [Slashes Basil arm and his back, unable to block Ratigan's assaults] Basil: As I feared. Injury makes defense untenable. [Basil attempts to block but fails] Prognosis: Increasingly negative [Ratigan sends a hook slash across Basil even closer, and uppercuts him over the edge. Basil grabs the edge of the clock hand dangling above Big Ben] Ratigan: Let's not waste anymore of one another's time. We both know how this ends. [Ratigan finishes Basil off with a downward slashes, causing Basil to fall to his doom] [Cuts back to Basil hiding at 2:08] Basil: Conclusion: Inevitable. Unless...[ Fight plays out as described up to Basil's final move at 3:02.]

This is one of my favorite animated Disney films and I still have this movie on both VHS and DVD too! I also like how Dawson still wore his Rat Trap outfit from when he and Basil were at that bar earlier in the movie since Dawson continued to wear it up until near the end of the movie once Ratigan was defeated and Olivia was saved even though he didn't have the hat and the eyepatch from earlier. In the next sequence when everyone was back at Basil's house on Baker Street, I noticed Dawson was back in his regular clothes by then.

This scene starts is when Basil puts Ratigan's cape in the gears which causes him to choke afterwards Ratigan kicks Olivia and landed on one of the gears and about to squash her but Basil saved her just in time and heads outside to help Dawson and Flaversham to reach her hand but Ratigan shows up and grabbed Basil but Olivia is recused by Mr. Flaversham

Disney was in a bad spot and they made this movie with great effort to get funding for The Little Mermaid, so thats probably why it's overshadowed because immediately afterwards, came the Disney Renaissance.
