Easily your most complex main character I've encountered to date. I have no idea if he is ultimately evil or good. There's zero black and white thinking in his actions. While people tend to cling to black and white, it's simply not reality and Auto is an excellent example of that understanding. Your skill at writing is a direct reflection of Auto's own rapid progress from abused boy to master wizard. You never fail to impress me with each story. I had thought children of the void was your best work and said as much. I was so very wrong and I'm happy to be so. keep doing what you do my friend. It is making a lot of people's lives much less boring and expanding perspectives. Bravo!!!👏👏👏👏

Otto is ambitious and amoral. Likely due to his horrible childhood, in which he was humiliated and beaten and told he would amount to nothing by all the male members of his family, especially his even more amoral father. He does seem to care about the poor, and children, and of course those with magic powers. He is an anti-hero, and I am curious to see if his ambition will push him to be more villainous over time.

Just got done with a 9 hour binge of book one, the way you lead people through the emotions is brilliant writing (the wife). And at the same time I'm constantly asking, "should I be rooting for this guy" amazing how you write him clearly flawed and kind of dark, but you justify it with his family and upbringing in a subtle way.

Haha! "While he was no longer sickened by it, Otto still didn't have a taste for torture, and was happy to leave before matters got too unpleasant". Hmmm? A few pages back I seem to recall him PHYSICALLY RIPPING THE SOULS from 50-people in a conveyor-belt fashion. I know I know, he did clarify it was out of necessity and took no joy in it. I think this is what's most important, otherwise I might start thinking he lacked a rock-solid, well-adjusted psyche! -for the record this was not to criticize but to say I was cracking-up. Enjoying your work, thank you.

Kelton reminds me of a Paladin from Dungeons and Dragons. That is to say, he embodies the "lawful stupid" paradigm. He sees someone has done an injustice and demands punishment even if it would doom the entire kingdom around him. Perhaps he would pat himself on the back even as enemy forces were marching on the capital and nobles the kingdom over were in the process of cutting deals of betrayal in order to save their own hides.

Dear James, holy crap! What started out "a bit sinister" in book one developed into something really nasty (which means, great story) and I am absolutely hooked. Trying to avoid spoilers for anyone who reads this, I can only use hints: once the guard loyal to the old king found out the truth, I admit it staggered me. I was not sure whether to keep supporting the new king and his advisor or the guard, purely for moral reasons. That thought has been lingering in the memory ever since. Very interesting :) And now I'm going to start with book three, can't wait :) Excellent story arc so far, great developments, and very entertaining. Thank you so much for sharing and all the best to you.

@@JamesEWisherbooks it also always puts a smile on my face reading your replies - I thoroughly enjoy this interaction. When I was a kid, before the internet was known to the public, I thought how wonderful it would be to read books by authors still living (as opposed to, say, Shakespeare and the likes) and once I actually got my hands on books by living authors, I thought how wonderful it would be to let them know my appreciation. And now you are actually the first author whose books I've been enjoying who even responds to me. Heaven :) I'm not far from completing the third book and I will let you know what I think. Until then, take good care of yourself, all the best and have a wonderful day.

I was just trying to bridge the time until the third book of "The King Killer Chronicles" came out and was told to read the Abercrombie trilogy, which took about a week because I couldn't put it away. So, I took to browsing youtube for audiobooks for the first time in ages and stumbled on this series three days ago. First of all, thanks for putting this up on YT for free and for reading it yourself. Second , the storytelling is amazing. I always find that predictable characters are a sign of depth and realism - you understand the characters motivations and know to some degree how they will react to something. When it comes to the story, however, it's the opposite - a predictable story makes a boring book. I have to say you've hit both nails right on the head - characters I can understand and the story - I can't tell where it's going. My adhd brain won't let me listen at anything but 1.75x speed so sadly I'll be done with the series by the end of next week... lucky for me you have quiet the library amassed. Funny enough I find some of the aspects I enjoyed the most about the king killer and abercrombie series reflected in your work. The depth of the characters, the ruthlessness born out of habit, the intricate magical systems, the endless scheming of politicians.... Chapeau to you, sir!

Just starting this second book after finishing the first … these books are so great! It’d be awesome to one day get a tv show or movie series following the story EDIT also as a side note it’s a nice change having Otto not being the classic infallible main character… it’s nice seeing he’s not perfect as it makes him seem like a real person.

I fell in love with this series. Thank you so much! For me, a story stands and falls with its characters. Usually, I don't really like the main character in stories. They all tend to be the same good-hearted hero stuff and personally, I find that really bland and boring. But this, this is brilliant. Otto might be my favorite main character of all times! And there is no annoying love interest, at least not so far. This story really is the jackpot for me. I can't thank you enough for your work and your free uploads here on YT.
