Hi Ken, What an excellent film of this fantastic cable operated street tramway set in such a beautiful part of North Wales. You have filmed some wonderful shots of the trams with the mountains in the background and then looking out to sea. I also really enjoyed your commentary. Thanks so much for producing these wonderful videos. We all really enjoy following your travels around the UK.

Great video! I like how you mixed in the trackside video clips when you passed that location on the video of the ride.

Wonderful video! Cable railways are very interesting things- I am very curious why the cars appear to have trolley poles fitted to their roofs, if the entire route is run by cable, and no overhead is present.

Leverettrailfan , I believe they used to be used for communication at one time.

In this case it was communication, however overhead catenary is often used to power lighting in cable trams.

What purpose do the apparently redundant trolley poles serve? Looks like there's an electric wire strung on the blue lineside poles too?

Very good coverage - even showing how the cable is attached. I hadn't heard of this tramway. I'm assuming no cars are allowed on the bottom of the street section!

Interesting track on the lower half. Looks like the middle rail is shared by both directions.

6:45, just past the midway station, between the engine house but before the shed, there may be evidence of disused track. It is not visible here as it is long gone. You get a better view of its position at 14:37 where the current route curves right going down and the old track went straight ahead. However, in youtube video kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3PYfopqf7F6icU from 1955, at 1:51, it is clearly visible and is overgrown. Logically it can't have been a siding as the both cars are permanently tied to one single cable and have to do things equidistantly and symmetrically. There are rails but no cable and no rollers. The cameraman is between it on his right and the track in use on the left and the tram passes on his left. Does anyone know what this was? I'm guessing they moved the station a few yards to one side, but why?

QUESTIONS: 1-when one car requests slow does the other car ascending/descending also go to slow? 2-how does the attendant select which cable to use since the car does not turn around. Is there a grip device that can be moved from one cable to the next? 3-Can the car be emergency stopped by removing the grip on the cable and with onboard brakes? 4-How is communication accomplished? Is it wireless or by a track cable transmitter? Thanks in advance to anyone who knows the answers. BTW-beautiful area and a peaceful ride. Wouldn't mind moving or visiting there.

Since my last question I've learned some of the answers. 1-communication is by a trackside wire which acts as an antenna for a short range radio and runs the length of the track. Many railroads use the same method. 2-the wheel is to tighten a grip on the moving tram cable or to loosen and allow the cable to slip through thus stopping the tram. The wheel is called a "Grip". I hope that this helps to answer your question.

@@GVMGVM-dl1iu The wheel is only a supplementary brake wheel, the trams cannot be disconnected from the cable, they communicate with the winding house by some form of radio, used to communicate with the trolley arms and overhead wires but technology has made these redundant.

This seems to differ from the cable hauled street railway in San Fransisco America in that over there, the cable always runs at a constant pace and the tram operator grips and releases the cable to control the car, so I don't believe they actually communicate with the winding house as they drive.

Niels Petersen , I think the method of communication has changed over the years which could explain the overhead wires which are not used now, they may well still be useable on standby, I would recommend consulting their website, my commentary is based on a brochure I purchased during the day.
