CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Chet (John Candy) gnaws and sweats his way through a 96-ounce steak.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In the John Hughes-scripted The Great Outdoors, John Candy stars as Chet Ripley, an oafish paterfamilias who takes his family on a vacation at a lakeside resort. Their enjoyment is seriously compromised when brother-in-law Roman Craig (Dan Aykroyd) shows up with his wife and kiddies. The rest of the film is an ongoing war between Ripley's carefree aggregation and Craig's obnoxiously prissy brood, and making things worse, a driving rainstorm forces both families to remain under one roof well-past their threshold of patience. Annette Bening makes her film debut as Aykroyd's ill-tempered wife.
CREDITS:
TM & © Universal (1988)

Director: Howard Deutch

@@TravelinBand747 He still did finish it because in the next scene (not shown here) as they were exiting the restaurant, he was wearing a sweatshirt saying "I Ate The Old 96er" which probably meant that he won the prize for finishing it. Also as they were leaving, one of the customers can be heard saying "History was made tonight" feeling that someone has ordered the Old 96er and finished it which could be another reason why all the customers, waiters, waitresses, the chef, and bartenders were watching him eat it.

John Candy is portraying the classic Fat Person Out to Dinner routine in the beginning of this scene. He's loving everything he sees on the menu, wishes he could have it all, makes his order, admires what someone else orders, and says he'll split their food with them, whether they want him to or not. 😆
