The Rzhev Episode may be the hardest to watch . I wrenches at your heart and touches your soul. This is when the Red Army and the Soviets bore the full burnt of fighting the Nazis and entire Europe behind the Nazis as there was no 2nd front and Germans were able to bring in well trained refreshed troops at will from Western Europe to counter the Red Army offensives. Even then the Nazis finally failed totally at Stalingrad and also at Rzhev despite the heavy Red Army costs before the Soviet resolve and determination to destroy the invader. Justice would have been served full if the Nazi war criminal General W Model was hanging by a wire from a pole after the Nuremberg trials.

People talk about this documentary being biased, but showing Rzhev like this...This was on the operational/tactical level the worst defeat in Soviet history. It was really bad for the Germans as well, that is why no one talks about it because both sides lost and failed. This documentary shows this. The documentary also shows that operational success or faliure sometimes does not matter, as strategically, the Rzhev battles and Operation Mars maybe failed with its operational objectives, it managed to lock down the German front and enabling the success of Operation Uranus in Stalingrad.

This Episode by far,in my think, has the largest comments discrepency between E-Version. The comment of 1942 summer compaign is completely opposite, and, Zhukov's achievement. Is it shame to describe casualties/failure? No one would look down the contribution of Russian. Be honst to history( Operation Mars is still un-disclosed) is the only way out.

Imagine fighting in a war with no mercy not only with the enemy in front of you but also with your government being only a little less brutal. The words Little Mother Russia won the war because that’s what these heroes died for not the party. God bless and help rest their souls.

People do not win the war on their own - their actions, the actions of the army, the party, the economy are always controlled by the government, the leader of which is Stalin. Western propaganda always speaks of Stalin’s mistakes, but never wants to acknowledge his achievements and therefore propaganda is trying to make the Soviet victory not the result of government policy, but a random event achieved by people living in a vacum without government and ideology.

John Lansing Those who did not live in the USSR will never understand one very simple idea. The Soviets didn't need to be told what they were fighting for. It is as if your father had to explain to you that your private home must be protected from bandits who broke into it. Most of the Soviet people built the country with their own hands from scratch after the civil war. And this was both a plus and a minus for the red army. Plus, the soldiers are highly motivated. The downside is poor preparation. If instead of building factories, people would be prepared for war, the losses would probably be much less. But then there would not be such a powerful economy in a country capable of providing such a huge army with everything necessary. I apologize for my English.

Егор Стрельцов Stalin was a very terrible person but when the war was going badly he was smart enough to stop saying fight for communism BUT said save LITTLE MOTHER RUSSIA then every person became a avenging child of the soil. John Lansing You simply repeat what your books tell you about soviet story, but you need to study the real story. In real history, Soviet people voluntarily joined the Communist Party during the war. They defended their social system and the achievements of the October Revolution, and not the abstract national Russia.
