Robinhood was a victim, and now they're the scapegoat. According to the CEO of Webull during his interviews, it was not really the clearing houses fault for the large fees. The clearing house talks to the DTCC (something like 90% of trades on the market go through them, according to Anthony Denier), and they were the ones who raised the fee. If you're a clearing house trading with DTCC, in order to trade, you have to put up some percentage of the stock cost as collateral. This is usually something like 3%. However, for the meme stocks, they raised this requirement to 100%. Meaning the clearing houses had to pay the ENTIRE stock cost if you traded one of those securities. Of course, this caused them liquidity problems which made them reach out to the brokers they work with, either raising fees (like with Robinhood, apparently) or telling them to limit trading (like with Webull). I haven't done much more research on it, but it seems the DTCC is the cause for what happened that day. It is beyond me if their 100% collateral requirement was justified or manipulation. However, that part of the story has gone completely under the radar for most, even though it could be the most important part.
@Kai_soze3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, RH simply did not have the liquidity to sell unlimited amounts of the meme stocks.
@chongjunxiang30023 жыл бұрын
The moment RH admit they don't have money is too late lol
@memphis66943 жыл бұрын
You are right. The problem with RH, regarding this situation is that the CEO did not instill confidence with RH users. When your requirements rises from 3% to 100% it is understandable that you do not have the liquidity to cover. As a leader, own that, explain the consequences if you continued to allow account owners to trade and did not meet your fiduciary requirements, take charge and speak confidently. He did not do that. A large amount of account owners are average individuals who may have very limited to no knowledge of trading, they seen an opportunity to possibly make some extra money. When they tried to purchase the security, they were unable too, anger and manipulation comes to mind. Understanding people’s emotional state is necessary in order to build trust in RH again and coming off confident and taking ownership is the way to do that. RH CEO did the exact opposite.

They basically proved the stock market is a sham to the entire world. Which is quite dangerous to them and potentially, well, worse then simple bankruptcy in all honesty. Law and order is slowly dissolving on all levels of society as the belief and faith in law erodes, some actions may be taken that are upreferable to those who blatantly disregarded the law and proper and simple humane practice before. What a shame to see an empire collapse out of a few random actions here and there.

A free market without government does not exist. @@VeryProPlayerYesSir1122 That’s not true. The government also needs to decide: 1, how long a patent applies for. 2, what happens when a company if person goes bankrupt. 3, deciding what can be owned - for example whether slaves, or information such as the human genome, can be bought. 4, how much market power is acceptable, in order to prevent monopolies and encourage competition - the basis for any effective consumer-driven economy.
