Lance Grabow Very true. There is a minimum of logic that you cannot escape. Bungie jumping as an offensive tactic against millions of fast monster is ridiculous. Escorting prisoners using soldiers armed with long ass spears held upright is ridiculous. Keeping these prisoners on the wall right where the battle takes place is ridiculous when they claimed these prisoners were valuable (that's why they didn't execute them). And on and on and on. What a stupid movie. If I were 12 years old, I might have enjoyed it.

Zhang Yimou, the director who directed this film, isn't well known in America, and probably wholly unknown by Chris Stuckmann's audience. He's a legendary director who won acclaim in the 80s and 90s by making Chinese modern historical drama films that won numerous awards including top prizes at Cannes, Berlin, and Venice Film Festivals, a feat which few directors if any have been able to do. These Chinese period drama films are some of the greatest films ever made in my opinion. Oddly enough since the 2000s, he's been making a lot of commercial martial arts films, some of which have been pretty bad, and it seems this movie might be the worst. It's a real bummer that his legacy is getting tarnished by these recent films, but I would recommend viewing his earlier works, especially To Live among others, if you have the range to appreciate so-called "foreign films" LOL.. (I like Chris's channel, for his everyman and fanboy-like approach, but it's funny how Americans pretty much think Hollywood is the end all be all of cinema)
@morpheusdreamer8 жыл бұрын
Yea some of his earlier films like 'Raise the Red Lantern' and 'To Live' are fantastic! But now he seems to have been branded as China's premier director and since Hero makes increasingly commercial films. I think 'The Great Wall' comes off as really cynical and it won't attract people who like 'foreign films' and at the same time will put off a lot of general cinema-goers because it's a Chinese film. So it's kind of the worst of both. I wish he would return to doing the kind of Chinese period pieces he was known for but those won't be the kind of blockbusters that are increasingly expected in China these days.

As a Chinese North American (Chinese Canadian specifically) I have to disagree with you Chris. Damon is playing the saviour character in this movie, without his character the Chinese army would not have won the war. If it wasn't for the object that Damon brings the Chinese would not have figured out how to beat the monsters. Also Damon wipes out monsters all on his own or with Pedro Pascal's character while it takes so many Chinese soldiers to defeat one or several of them get eaten by the monsters. Meanwhile Damon wipes them out like it's no problem. Unfortunately, he does play the white saviour of this movie. While I agree with your other points and am aware this is primarily a Chinese movie, there's no getting around the fact that Damon played the saviour character. It is offensive I think for Chinese people because surely a Chinese army that has been training for at least 60 years would know how to beat the monsters better than the 'european' man who came to witness one battle.
@Akihito0078 жыл бұрын
Well since white people HAVE had to save the world multiple times and it was WHITE MEN who invented almost everything in the last 200 years and fought most to end worldwide slavery, you're welcome. China was a slave holding, brutal dictatorship through most of its history!
@thekingofkong2398 жыл бұрын
I think you've misunderstood me. I never stated that Damon's character was evil, nor did I make egregious general claims stating that all white people are evil. I simply said that his character is portrayed as the saviour character of the movie, which he is. its a problem in Hollywood because all the movies we ever get contain characters, much like Damon's character going around the world saving non-white people. the root problem I am stating is that asian-north americans want to be represented in film as heroes, not just as people who need to be saved. It's simply asking for equal representation, not that white people shouldn't be heroes because they are in many circumstances. But when a film is portraying a battle that is occurring in China, it would nice to see the hero character as a chinese person as it does take place in china prior to the arrival of any european settlers or colonizers As for the other comment, I would encourage you to study the history of people groups that do not have white skin. I think you'll be surprised to know that many modern day inventions and civil rights movements (such as the abolishment of slavery) began with people of colour. For instance, one area where abolishing slavery derived from is the Bible, which in and of itself is a middle eastern text written by middle eastern and jewish men. In fact, the abolishment of slavery could be traced back to began over 2000 years ago to around the beginning of the spread of Christianity. Actually most major religions teach and promote the equality of all people groups, including slaves and people of colour. As for your last comment that China was a slave holding, brutal dictatorship through most of history... if you look at any country's history most countries had laws permitting slave holding and permitted the brutal dictatorship of slave owners towards their slaves. Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Australia, etc. Civil rights movements to abolish slavery didn't begin in one country, they occurred around the world in most countries. It just happens to have gotten the most amount of attention in the United States because news in the United States is highly publicized internationally. Keep in mind, North American countries are relatively young in comparison to our European, Asian, Australian and African counterparts. Many inventions that you are claiming have been made in the last 200 years by only white men I can almost guarantee were already by others around the world, of every ethnic background including white

The film's largest investor, the Wanda Group (owner of Legendary Pictures) has good relationships with the Chinese government and the Communist Party of China. In December 2016, users of film review website Douban rated The Great Wall 5.4 out of 10, which is considered very low. On Maoyan, another movie review aggregator, the 'professional score' is only 4.9 out of 10.[37][38] On December 28, the Communist Party's official media outlet People's Daily published an article on its website severely criticizing Douban and Maoyan for doing harm to the Chinese movie industry with their bad reviews.[39] On the same day, Maoyan took down its 'professional score' for The Great Wall.[37] Fuck you China

Clara Mølgaard I found it to be a good movie obviously but no where near to be a masterpiece in my opinion , I felt like a story like that was already made before , except this movie has a little different concept it still felt like a movie that was done before. But overall I would give it a B .

Saw this back in December. I have to say that I disagree with your assessment that it wasn't a "white savior" movie. As an Asian man, I thought that the film was also very problematic in its portrayal of Asian men in the grand scheme of things. **spoilers** As much as he is portrayed as a team player and someone who learns from the Chinese, in the end, Matt Damon is the guy who does the single heroic act of killing the monsters and saving all of China. On the other hand, 90% of the Asian men who had a talking role--most of whom could have just as, if not more, likely be in the position to defeat the monsters--die or sacrifice themselves just so they could help Matt Damon reach this point and fulfill his white hero role. Asian men are therefore seen as disposable, while the only white man in all of China just happens to save the day, and *surprise* wins the affection of the Asian woman while doing so. On a unrelated note, it felt like half the dialogue was somebody saying something in Chinese, somebody translating the exact same thing in English to Matt Damon, and vice versa. Had me laughing out loud.

Joe This comment is going to have spoilers for the movie for anyone who cares. Damon wasn't the only one killing the monsters in the film, and he wasn't the one to get the killing blow on the Queen either. Though I can agree that it seemed like the Chinese men were only there to die. Jing Tian's character is the one to get the final blow on the Queen after Damon's arrows are continually knocked away. Granted he does throw the magnet, but I'm pretty sure she threw the spear. I could be remembering that wrong though.
@Drownedinblood8 жыл бұрын
It's hinted but there is no kiss or sex scene. She just looks fondly at him a lot, and talks about how much they are the same etc.
@chickenmcdickin8 жыл бұрын
I mostly disagree.... he didn't get the single kill blow to *save* all of China if it's been emphasized that he's a team player. I didn't see him regarded as the hero in the end that single-handedly saves all of China. It was all players working together, and I hope I don't come off as rude but your comment about him winning the affection of the "asian woman" in a way is kind of racist, isn't it? Taking from East Asia's xenophobic past (and present).

So why are we focusing on Matt Damon if he's a non essential part of this massive Chinese army ?
@fridaa87718 жыл бұрын
Because he introduces us to the Chinese army, problems and their ways. We get to follow his progress getting to know the wall. It's a little bit like Harry Potter not being from the wizarding world because then you can learn and understand with him what's going on instead of just being thrown into it.
@spencerr19837 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I found him to be pretty high up there in white savior status. He rides in with the crucial element needed to stop the monsters, is an unstoppable bad ass, saves the lives of incompetent young foot solider several times, comes up with the idea to trap the monster and test the magnet, and is crucial to killing the queen in the final act of the movie. I'm not one to focus on race but hes not just a rank and file soldier that the review makes him out to be,
@kocashima5 жыл бұрын
@@spencerr1983 he has the macguffin which his idea only comes from hearing what the Generals are saying. It shows a mixing of ideas. The premise of capturing it to test is a simple idea for a European who brings up catching whales. However the Chinese folk bring the rest of the plan together. Matt also was not that essential in the final act as General Lin made the final blow, and needed someone to use the macguffin to land the hit.

It has a weird vibe overall but I agree that the backlash is completely unwarranted. Damon's character is supposed to be a foreigner, and he seems like one all of the movie. Visually amazing, a great movie for casual viewing!
@ap25828 жыл бұрын
if Matt Damon's character doesn't bring that much to the role then why cast such a high-profile actor in the first place? why not get a high-profile Asian actor to take his lead and make the film exclusively that and take out any controversy that goes with casting a foreign actor in the lead role. what's the point?

I find it hypocritical that he went easy on this movie, but ripped Gods of Egypt a new one, despite the fact that both had the same problems. Gods of Egypt was not a good movie, but it's definitely not one of the worst movies in recent years.

EndCreditReviews There's a difference between having a single white guy and having a country of people having the wrong skin color.
@Catubrannos7 жыл бұрын
+Mrbluefire95 Gods of Egypt was about the gods, not the people. Aside from that the original population of North Africa was caucasian. The majority of people who live in that part of the world today are still caucasian, though mostly darker skinned compared to those in Europe. The ancient Libyans, neighbours of the Egyptians, were not just caucasian, they were white. Egyptian paintings from the time show them with fair skin and brown hair. Ancient Egyptians looked like modern Egyptians.

Did Stuckman watched the same movie as me? Damon was obviously portrayed as the hero. Who else would it be? He brought the secret weapon for beating the monsters, kills more monsters than anyone else on screen, learns to be honorable, and saves the day at the end along with the Girl. The only difference from normal conventions is that he didn't kiss the Girl at the end, though some feelings were sort of implied.
@bluessax50898 жыл бұрын
If Matt Damon is not the "Great White hope" it would be nice for a Black or Hispanic actor not be the "Great Brown hope". The people who made that movie pretty much sold out in my opinion because they did make Matt Damon the great white hope for marketing reasons. I though "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was a marvelous movie and done with an all Asian cast! Didn't is win the oscar?

Who knows, but Matt Damon is presented as the Great White Hope as he is used to make the movie more marketable in America. I think we all agree that is a fact. I like this channel and I like Matt Damon, but in this situation I'm right. Otherwise, they would've used Denzel. I am Really glad that Donnie Yen is breaking into American movies!!! Donnie Yen is the Man!!!

Oh MrKockNoker, I guess your either very ignorant or very racist. I guess you forgot that Egypt is part of Africa and was once of the most advanced civilizations ever. Fortunately, I believe that racists ideologies will soon be a thing of the past and we will all judge each other not by the color of their skin but the content of their character.
@bluessax50898 жыл бұрын
Seems you believe in "Alternative facts". I don't believe that any race is better than any other and I appreciate the contributions of every race, sex and religion that exists on this planet. Many of the ancient Egyptians had pitch black skin, everyone knows that as Jesus had skin like "Burned Brass". I respect all people and it's a pity that Trump is giving so many people the excuse to be more outwardly racist. We can only move forward together and if your not about that then you'll just be left behind. Back to my original statement, Matt Damon was obviously used as the great white hope in order to make the movie more marketable. That's just my opinion.

I didn't know about the movie until one week before its release, I went in without prejudice, no whitewash bullshit in my mind. Shit I didn't even know it was a full chinese movie!!... I liked almost every aspect of it. The only thing I didn't like was the monsters. I didn't know it was a monster movie either so when they showed the monsters I got more excited so I expected more variety, bigger monsters or an entire hierarchy of monsters, you know, the usual stuff when you set up a monster race. But nah they didn't go deeper in that. For me it's a B, just for the lack of more monsters.

With the Taotie released, Lin, William and Wang climb a tower to shoot a black powder rocket to detonate the explosives. Wang is killed while moving to the upper floors. Two of William's arrows are deflected by the Taoties, but Lin's spear breaches the defenses after William throws the magnet into the horde. The Queen is destroyed, and the rest of the horde is frozen solid. With the horde destroyed, William is given an offer, during which he forgoes the powder and instead frees Tovar, much to Tovar's annoyance. The two, guided by cavalry, begin their journey back to Europe as Lin, now the General, watches over them from the wall.
