The White Sharks of Guadalupe: Up to 7 metres of muscle and teeth, packed into an agile and streamlined body that can weigh in at 2250kg - this is the great white shark, one of the most infamous hunters on Earth. But the reality is that these sharks may disappear from our oceans altogether within the next 20 years. Their terrifying reputation is part myth, part reality, rooted in their instinct to hunt and kill whatever looks like a good prey animal … and that can include human beings. But how far is their killer-reputation justified? Are great white sharks really the blood-thirsty loners we imagine them to be?
Dr. Mauricio Hoyos is a scientist working on the behaviour and ecology of sharks. He wants to find out why they follow certain patterns of movements, including longdistance travels.
The usual methods of getting close to great whites to study them closely and form impressions of their population cross-section include caged dives and diving with airtanks. But these techniques are now known to affect the sharks’ behaviour: the predators’ extraordinary electrical sensory systems react to the galvanic properties of metal. In addition, the sharks are often lured closer with bloody bait, a technique that undoubtedly increases the animals’ aggression and prey drive, which makes them
uncomfortably dangerous diving partners. Furthermore, caged dives entirely rely on the animals coming to the researchers in order to take detailed notes on each individual, but the success of this depends on the sharks’ mood and willingness to approach the cage.
Frederic is able to approach the animals and is treated entirely differently by them compared to conventional divers. His very basic equipment means that there is less chance of it interfering with the sharks’ normal and natural behaviour, which allows him to get close to them without triggering aggression. He dives with the sharks without a cage, without any form of protection - just Frederic and two other freedivers versus the predators in the water. They watch each other’s backs, because the sharks are known to attack mostly from behind. But freediving is the very thing that makes Frederic’s diving encounter with the great whites a safer experience.
Frederic is likely to get much closer to the sharks than is normally possible, and in this way is able to assess the animals in more detail.
Frederic’s assignment also includes an assessment of the sharks’ behaviour. This is also extremely difficult under normal conditions, when diving equipment interferes with the sharks’ behaviour. As such very little is known about the great whites’
detailed behaviour, and Frederic’s dives with them is an unprecedented window into their lives. Since Christian is there to document Frederic’s finding, the scientist is able to try to assess and interpret the behaviour witnessed by the freedivers.
Since Great Whites have such a fearsome reputation, Frederic’s interactions with them in the water in itself provide the researchers with interesting insights into their interactions with humans. How and why does their behaviour differ towards a diver
with conventional equipment compared to a freediver like Frederic and his two friends: This is an experiment that has never been documented before.
To gain more insights into approaching fierce predators like the great white shark, Christian and Frederic have to be extremely well prepared. One thing is certain: with a predator like this, nothing can be left to chance. It is their success as a predator and their huge potential to inflict hideous damage that has made it so difficult to study them in detail and to assess their behaviour adequately from close quarters.

Humans kill enough fish and we could definitely make up for their absence. I dont want anything going extinct. When i think about it. I cant help but to realize that alot of predators of the wild sea and land have gone extinct. I dont believe they will go extinct though. They've been saying that for the past 20 years at least. If they could count every shark in the ocean. I might believe them. But they havent even fully explore the ocean. Use a little logic and you can see right through bs. Im not saying there isnt an issue. I just think its not as bad as they say. Less sharks. More fish for everyone else. Just saying. Use commonsense. If there was more sea lions then we would just start eating sea lions. Deer are an issue because they reproduce so much and they've been saying the same thing about deer. Yet less and less people hunt. And still no problem. You have to realize that humans can only see so much of the ocean at a time. It would be literally impossible to say there is a certain number of anything in the ocean. Like i said. Use commonsense. Listen to the holes in what these people say. Stop believing everything you hear. Just because its a narrator with a deep voce saying it on national geographic

It’s all bullshit. They were saying in the 80’s and 90’s and 00’s there’s wouldn’t be any great whites left by 2020. Well now there’s more than ever, more spotted, more attacks and more caught too. It’s just said so that people pour money into ‘ReSeArCh’ so these people can spend their days swimming with sharks and sitting in labs hypothesising over shark behaviour.

Justin Crimaldi well said, they have been saying for years that in ten more years there won’t be great whites and I heard one documentary say by 2020 up to 100 species of sharks will be extinct. Oh Please! It’s just to get those tasty research dollars. Same reason they try to make people believe that sharks don’t eat humans, don’t like the taste and only attack them ‘By MiStAkE’. What utter bullshit. There’s been cases of them attacking humans two at a time and fighting over the corpse in front of onlookers.

The footage of the sharks and portrayal of these amazing animals is fantastic! However, I was a bit disappointed at how dramatic and scary the Mexican Navy was portrayed by the narrator. We live on a sailboat in Mexico 9 months per year and have been boarded on various occasions and have found them to be nothing but extremely polite, kind and efficient. They have a job to do and I am grateful they are there to protect places like Guadalupe and animals like the Great White. To portray them as "appearing suddenly and armed to the teeth" is only furthering the misrepresentation of the US media that Mexico is unsafe. Not cool.

@Rocío Aguilera Orcas hunt sharks, they're smarter than sharks and they're bigger (average orca male ranges from 20-ft to 26-ft while male great white sharks range from on average 11-ft to 13-ft and female great white sharks range from on average 15-ft to 21-ft) Orca's hunt in pods and work together as a team, they are called apex predators because no animal hunts them (besides sea world executives) sharks are solo predators, they are not considered apex predators because orcas hunt them, along with other animals in the sea. Orcas are the number one predator in the ocean. change my mind.

@Rocío Aguilera oh fun facts about orcas. they're not whales, yes, they are called "killer whales" but they are not whales. they are actually kin to the dolphins and get their name because they hunt whales (grey whales mostly) their name should really be whale killers 😉

Love seeing the shots and live motion camera work they did. You would never catch me free diving with the sharks in the deep. Maybe in a reef where I am on the bottom. *shakes head* I think they must be a bit nuts to dive in the open tho. I respect all predators, but I would never fully trust them to leave my self open to how they attack. I would rather be a bit over safe then sorry if I did put my self in the bad spot. Even with snakes or other harmful animals under the wrong settings.

What a beautiful animal, I'd never want to get too close to one but what an amazing example of life and evolution. Despite its raw power, it really gives me a feeling of deadly but peaceful beauty. You can really see how intelligent they are by watching the body and eyes, in contrast to the dumb blood thirsty killer reputation often associated with them. Only thing I hate about this documentary is how there's too much emphasis on the people in it. I see and hear people all day every day, what I don't see are sharks. Less people; more sharks please.

That was a great documentary, with the exception of course of the fact that the GW is NOT the largest predator in the ocean as Killer Whales easily take them out and hunt in social packs which makes them even much more intelligent giving them an even greater predatory edge. But all that free diving and footage was exceptional but it really is a shame to see, after all that beautiful swimming and gaining the respect and confidence of the fish, they get harpooned in the back with a transmitter and one of those was really done in an ugly fashion. Other than that, sorry but that French accent really annoys me "pardon mois" but overall, I give it a B-.

It's unnecessary because human life is precious and you aren't seeing anything more by swimming unprotected than you are in the cage. You're simply playing Russian roulette with your life. Further, what can you learn doing so that has practical use? Great Whites ambush divers and swimmers and by proving under this circumstance is safe means nothing for other circumstances.

The main reason to get that close was for entertainment purposes I see that. But it was also a great help in getting the transmitters placed. Understanding the sharks better ultimately makes it easier to save them.

Sharks aren't predators we are in their turf. The ocean is theirs and humans aren't supposed to be in it but now we are and that's why attacks are occuring. No shark is out to kill a human but if you wave a steak in front of them don't blame the shark if they take a nibble to see what it tastes like. Unfortunately their nibble can take a limb or kill but it's not their fault.

this is why it upsets me when everybody saw Ocean Ramsey as a hero and deemed her "The Shark Whisperer" for riding the dorsal fins of great white sharks... but then you have these wonderful people who are doing things for extensive research on how sharks live and how we can understand them better in nature... they also know the risks of being in the water with a predator... but why is it when you get some "hot skinny model blonde" riding sharks for a simple campaign and at times touching the protected animals illegally in protected zones such as the Guadalupe Islands and then everybody pays attention and praises her like a god... but then you have more trained professionals with the permits to do so and who seem to have a little bit more of an understanding of these animals... and no one bats an eyelash to these heroic men who are doing the exact same thing... it's sort of raises a brow of question to me... I personally believe that the men of this world deserve way more credit than they're getting in this day and age

@bishpleeez
@bishpleeez 7 жыл бұрын
Haha^^ no sweetie, i'm not jealous, I just think that THESE guys deserve some more attention, that's all. What they do and mostly, HOW THEY DO IT, is just a big difference on how Miss Ramey approaches the Beast. And honestly, I don't need to be jealous because first off I'm not ugly or anything - is there such a thing as an ugly person? To me, there is not, because I value not the looks of a person, but the personality and the qualities. I am no shallow person honey ;) and I have qualities of my own which I enjoy and am very proud to have. Am I a troll? LOL no, certainly not. Okay, I like trolls. But you know, the funny-looking fantasy creatures that exist in computer games and stuff like that ;) I'm just curious why these guys didn't make the headline. Is it, because they're not blonde, hot and able to ride a great white shark? Of course Miss Ramsey contributes to protection of the Apex Predator in her own way (I started a small art project and you are welcome to check it out). BUT: I think these free divers should get as much credit - if not, even more - than her. See for yourself and google it. You won't find anything on the freedivers, but millions of stuff on Ocean Ramsey. Why is that I wonder? Hmm...

It's romanticism. The story of a single brave (foolhardy) sole facing a great beast is more captivating and sellable than three people doing the same as a group. I don't think gender is much of a factor in the difference of attention these people are getting.

Thanks for the film, bravery, and conservation efforts, I applaud them all. Every year when shark week returns I'm hoping for some Guadalupe Island action, I love watching Mauricio and ALL of the other men and women that bring this amazing footage and research to our eyes. All of the footage of the different groups of White sharks around the planet is fascinating to me! But something about these sharks at Guadalupe are my favorite to watch, especially after I saw that night time episode where they went to the oceans floor, Wow...that was insane!! Such aggression, and numbers of sharks, that was incredible footage to me. After seeing that episode the idea of free diving with these animals is something I'll never understand, nor have the education, skill set or bravery to do so, lol.
