When I got serious about photography when I was 16 my dad bought me the Nikon N50 from our local camera store. I pretty much paid for it taking pics at horse shows the first summer I had it. It served me well through art school too. I absolute love the little N50. I pulled it out the other day and as soon as I get a battery I’m gonna take it for a spin.

The F90x (N90s for you US guys) are a classic. A beast of a camera that takes a beating, pops up like Oliver Twist, and asks for more. Yeah, the F4 may let you use it as a weapon if you need to defend your self, but for the price you can't beat the F90x. Have used it for years and it's still my favourite analog Nikon.

NY NY An F100 is just sitting here, since being used 2x after I got it used in 2019. Wonderful condition and I even got the stickiness off the grip. I can get processing, hi res negative scans etc. here in NY, but have no need for the physical media or prints. Trade it back in? I have DX,, FX and a pile of lenses (AIS, D, G, and 3rd party) instead. Never had a 35mm point and shoot, but had a basic Minolta rangefinder from 1973-1991 for college and pics of friends. Most of the 90s were missing years, photographically.

I haven't used mine in years, but an 8008s shooter here, back when I was doing travel journalism in the 90s. Great camera. At the time I got it, it was the little sibling to the great F4. Subsequently, the N90 came along and filled that role. I've kept my 8008s anyway, cause why sell it for only 30 or 40 bucks? Ironic, isn't it, that the cost of a 36 ex roll of film plus processing is gonna cost more than the camera itself. A few years ago a friend offered me an F4 for free, but I passed. I didn't want to take it and not use it.

The N80 is the answer if performance vs price is the question. This is true now and was true when it was first released. It is the best consumer AF film camera Nikon ever made. About $135 in like new condition now. A like-new F100 is about $450. If a few hundred bucks difference is no big deal then the answer is F100.

Here's a plug for the N75/F75. Yes, the build quality is 'plastic fantastic' but it's cheaper than dirt. And the best thing is that the vr works for vr lenses. True, if you leave it on the ground and step on it, it's going to break. But, hey, they are the disposable razors of cameras. Now, I have much nicer Nikon 35mm cameras, like the F100 and F4. But if I'm going to hike up mount Tahoma to comet falls, I don't want to carry heavy gear. That's the time to break out the N75. I agree about the F6 being a kin's ransom. The problem with some cameras is that they become collectors items. Then they get a collector price instead of a tool price.

The best 35mm film camera of your group is the Nikon f801s here in the UK (N8008s). Reasons- ive never had a bad one they all ways seem to work and i had one from new my first semi pro camera. With spot metering and fast frames per seconds, wonderfully clear viewfinder. Now on my 3rd or 4th one i still use today 25 years later occasionally, never had one brake down on me.. just a change of sercomstance. My last film camera before moving over to a Nikon D70s digital camera the first reasonable price digital much in the vein of the 801s interesting isn't it..😮. I consider myself a Nikon collector like your self, and a Nikon historian. The reason for all these cheap but good 35mm film camera's like f601,f600m,f65,f50,f70 and so on is because it was at a time of transition to digital cameras both compact and slr. Nikom themselves made hundreds of different Coolpix cameras at that time. Anything from 1.5 mp upto 12 mp, a transition of around 5 years. Sorry for long reply but find this time so fascinating. Great video by the way. 😊

The trouble with the F100 bodies is, unfortunately, the materials quality. The black paint peels off, the battery holder deteriorates and crumbles, the rubber grips fall off, the autofocus setting knob cracks, the film door breaks, etc. I've had three F100s over the past few years and they always end up being parts donations to the next F100 body I pick up.
@robbellphoto
@robbellphoto 9 ай бұрын
Lots of those issues can be overcome for sure ! But I’ve noticed that clearly the camera loses its value once these things happen. Worse for me is the freaking door :-( ! The battery holder blows but they’re cheap enough to replace ! Honestly, the ones I buy are broken and I fix them
@lanatrzczka
@lanatrzczka 9 ай бұрын
@@robbellphoto Because I work in automotive, some collogues and I decided to "fix" my first F100 when some of the paint started peeling off. We came up with an idea to tape-off everything and use a controlled spray to fix the peeled sections. Well, that didn't work because the very light adhesive used on the (quite thin) masking strips actually pulled off the rest of the paint. And that was my first of three F100 cameras before I finally gave up. I know some web sites hail the F100 as an F6 alternative, but it isn't true. The F100 peels, cracks, and breaks so often as it ages that it's just an unusable body. I had to do it on a payment plan, but the F6 destroys the F100 by still being "as new" even after 10 years of usage.

All these cameras were great in the 1990s but they're very old now. Not old like the F, F2 or F3 etc which can, in most cases be brought back to life because they're mechanical, but old as regards to their electronics and cheap plastic bodies which, when they inevitably fail, are not worth repairing. They're cheap for a reason.

I like the N90s. So much cheaper than the F100 (which is obviously great). The 2003 N75 would be my favorite (even over the F100) if it metered with manual focus lenses. It's the very last Nikon film SLR, save for the F6. Much, much smaller and lighter than the 80 and obviously smaller than the 90 or the 100, plus it has flash. It's the perfect autofocus compact travel camera, rivaling the 2004 Canon Rebel T2. My vote for best/cheapest. So, N90s for manual focus lenses around home. N75 for autofocus travel. Lol I got talked into one of those N70's, too. Ridiculous. I understand that Nikon is pronounced differently in different countries. But why would the "i" be pronounced the same in Nikon as it is in Nikkor and Nikkormat? Seems like the double k is the hint to pronounce it with a short i and the single k is the hint to pronounce it with a long i. How do you pronounce "biking" and "hiking"? Of course Nikon has said that all three pronunciations are acceptable. The Japanese pronunciation is "nee-kon". Go Buckeyes!

Hey @RhettAnderson, I concur about the Nikon F75. It is such a feature packed camera in a very small, compact body, takes a host of available Nikon lenses and performs amazingly to create some awesome pictures. It has got all the bells and whistles you'll ever need to create great pictures, so to say. I found mine last December on Christmas day in an almost brand new condition with a 28-100mm G kit lens in what is called juna bazaar (old market) in India in my city for peanuts. I immediately found a mint 50 mm f1.8D within the same week at half the market price and shortly afterwards an absolute mint AF-D 60 mm f/2.8D micro Nikkor. This is truly a lens worth every penny. I have clicked some of my best pictures with this kit. And to top it all, I bought an AF Nikkor 80-200 D ED lens this weekend which I am yet to test. I did let go of a like new F80 with battery grip and a 70-300 mm Sigma zoom lens in favor of this lens even though I was severely tempted to buy this kit as well. Gotta curb the G.A.S.😅 Cheers!

In Japanese, double consonants indicate a glottal stop, it doesn’t affect a vowel’s pronunciation, and the second consonant is not spoken. Vowels are always pronounced the same way. An i is always pronounced as an ‘ee’ sound A = ah E = eh I = ee O = oh U = a short, straight lipped oo sound

What is the best/cheapest 35mm camera contains two criterion: best (there can be only one) and cheapest (likewise). We aren't going very far with these and, after all the verbage we didn't. I would suppose that there are more than a few of cameras that many folks consider near the apex of execution. I respect opinion, but this media format creates an urge to over dramatize, and after a lifetime of overdramatization we will become insensitive to every claim.

Great comment! Thanks so much !! It is, for me at least, difficult to not be dramatic about a subject I am quite passionate about ;-) I suppose, by highlighting options, we enable those who may not have the means to invest in the higher end and coveted camera bodies, to be less self conscious about the choices available to us. You sound like a person that may have a meaningful insight into the topic. Thanks again for your thought sir
@kbarrett1844

Great comment. I truly get your point. However, I look at the 'overdramatization' as enthusiasm for a craft where the barrier of entry is getting higher and higher (film costs, vintage bodies etc.). Robert is emphasizing that we at least have reasonably cost options available (from the 90's, 2000's) that deliver more than adequate results without breaking the bank. The greatest AUTOMATIC 35mm ever made is NOW super accessible and what you make of it. That's Robert's point.
