I was there with my father, at the exit of the hairpin, under the trees on the hill. The hill became muddy quite fast and everyone was shoving their umbrellas into each other's face. Everyone was checking the weather on their smartphones, and quickly the rumor that the race couldn't possibly be restarted got around the general access areas. My father and I decided to go back home rather than risk being wet and miserable for nothing. When the red flag was called, we had enough time to take public transit back home before the race restarted.

Another great race of Button. I'm a huge fan of him and if there wasn't RedBull he'd surely gained more world driver titles. Shame that the McLaren started to suck from 2013 onwards and the start of the hybrid era so he didn't had anymore chance since his last win in Brazil 2012. He may "only" gained 8 wins for McLaren but it's overlooked how many podiums he reached from 2010-2012 and often was in the title hunt till the last 3 or 2 races

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is my favorite track hands down. I mean it helps Ive been there a few times and walked the track and everything and the island itself is a great experience even when nobodys racing or in winter. Its fast, its narrow, it has hard breaking points, multiple overtaking points for the brave, it flows and of course that famous wall to catch out anyone and everyone taking a snooze on the final straight. Simply an amazing track a stones throw away from old montreal. And when theres weather its even better to watch
@JasonAFlintham Жыл бұрын
If you want a example of how Jenson Button well and truly stood alone in these kinds of conditions, I strongly recommend you check out the Hungarian GP later that same year. On-and-off rain all day, the track seemingly bone dry one lap, then greasier than your average politician the next. Up and down the grid, drivers and engineers alike losing their heads over what tyres to be on at any moment. All except Button. He mastered the unpredictable conditions, kept his cool, and cruised through to take the second of his 3 wins in 2011, on his 200th GP start, at the circuit where he claimed his first ever win.

I was 52 at the time and, being a huge Jenson Button fan, I was completely out of my mind, jumping on the couch, yelling like a madman, when he took the lead of that unbelievable race. My kids, who were already in bed (it was around 10 PM in Belgium) jumped off their bed and came down with my wife, believing something terrible had happened... But at half-race, when Alonso and Jenson tangled and he exited the pits dead last, I was truly desperate. Then he appeared back in the points position and I thought "better than nothing". When he passed Webber and Schumacher to take 2nd position, I was like "take it easy, Jenson, it's already wonderful, don't ruin everything" but he turned a dead ear and went on to drive even faster, cutting Vettel's advance by 1-2 seconds a lap until he grew so big in the German's mirrors that he made a tiny mistake and Button breezed by, thank you very much! Certainly the best Canadian GP ever, arguably the best race of the 21st century, and probably in the top 5 of the greatest races ever.

For me, it was I think the second best race I've ever witnessed. It had everything, and so much tension for so long. Of course, the only race which I think beats it is the Brazilian GP in 2008, but while that wins for overall excitement, it was mostly crammed into just a few moments at the end, whereas the Canadian GP just ahd everything for hours. It even had a moment where David Coulthard, whilst commentating with Martin Brundle, described a bird as having red "shoulders" while he scratched around for something to talk about.

People forget how great of a driver he was overall. He won’t be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Vettel or Verstappen because he wasn’t fast-tracked into race-winning cars from an early age, and admittedly, he won’t be remembered as a driver who could drag a midfield car kicking and screaming into the sharp end of the grid like Schumacher or Alonso. To me, Button deserves to be mentioned alongside the likes of Hunt, Mansell, and Hill, as a driver who had to fight hard to get into F1, and fight even harder to stay there, and when the opportunity to win a title finally came along, grabbed it with both hands and didn’t let go.
