Yes Shane winning would probably would have happened anyway but at the end specifically Shane was on new tires at the end. People in the front like haley had 50 laps or so on there tires. I don’t know if wear effected performance much but I just kept that as a note because no doubt was Shane the best but the gap was most likely more around 3 to 5 tenths faster against the leaders during the weekend. I’m not discrediting SVG but at the end he was the candidate to win because how he knew to pass fast. If everyone was on new tires SVG would have totally gotten held up the entire time by people defending.

@@bahookygeggie3704 I did disclose that he is fast at passing due to his experience on this type of street course racing. Yes he did take a hit on track position but his vast experience and fast pace on courses like these were helped by his newer tires. I’m sure it was hard to pass all the cars but was helped by newer tires. His pure talent on these types of tracks and knowledge led him to win. The consequences for him were balanced out by his newer tires but mostly his talent on these tracks.

SVG has won 81 times in 508 Supecars races (which means SVG has more experience now as a relatively young driver than Ambrose had when he *retired* from racing). SVG isn't going to follow in Ambrose's footsteps. 2015 when Ambrose returned to Supercars and everyone thought he'd do well, given he was racing for Penske (who, once they got a good driver, won plenty of championships in the same car)... but the field was so competitive in 2015 Ambrose could barely make it into the mid pack and retired after three races. My dad worked NASCAR pit crew for 25 years. this was the first raced we watched together since my very early childhood. We were rooting hard for christopher bell, but in the long run this was the most exciting race i’ve watched in my life, it’s the first time i’ve watched a race with my father fully probably ever. We were so excited to watch the end even tho Bell got f**d by the change in laps. Then watching SVG dominate the final laps was a treat. This is what NASCAR needs. My dad helped Gordon win his first Winston cup in 1995, watching him be excited about a race along side of my 25 year old ass that grew up in the infield daycares made me realize that regardless of the result, this is NASCAR. and it needs more of this.

@moose5724 @alexfire53-ze7px Interesting conversation going on here. Personally, my feeling about NASCAR are mixed: on one hand, they have an exciting new generation of drivers, a car that (if you solve the safety issues) is amazing, a calendar that improves year after year and teams such as 23XI and specially Trackhouse changing the sport for the better. But on the other hand, the playoff system is a joke that pretty much only takes one stat into account and thus tarnishes the season and has things such as the guy in P5 in the standings being eliminated from contending for a top 16 spot in the final standings cause the guy in 19th got a win in a shitshow of a race and the guy in P3 only getting in cause someone with a race win had a career ending accident. Not only that, but the stage system absurdly divides races into three parts (thankfully, they got rid of stage cautions at road courses) and the charter system has only made costs higher and made things harder for a team to enter a car, while also making teams such as RWR qualify for the 500 just cause they have cash and charters. Which is a shame, cause without this things (and some actions done behind the scenes in recent years), you could argue NASCAR's the most exciting racing series out there, but their almost exclusive focus on being the WWE of motorsports hurts the true spirit of what should be the top motorsport in the US (alongside IndyCar). Cause even without playoffs, we would've had some legendary title battles in the past decade or so, including this year. Also, some NASCAR content creators making a sport out of attacking F1 and its fans for no reason whatsoever doesn't help.

I don't think there was a single person in my section that wasn't rooting for SVG towards the end. Every time he made a pass there were huge cheers from the crowd. Also called the perfect strategy so that he was on attack towards the end while everyone around was on old tires. He didn’t take a pole position for any of them, on a weekend where even a wildcard driver managed to achieve the feat, but Shane still swept the three races. He managed his tyres and pace way better than everyone in the first two dry races, but it started to rain in the third race and Shane completely dominated in the last race. I got the chance to shout out to him after the podium for that third race and he gave me a thumbs up. His 2023 season in Supercars might not be as hot; but the man is a fucking machine. I think this is just the start of his win tally over in NASCAR.

15:25 I’d argue that there’s two more reasons for SVG’s win. The first one being luck. Sure, he did pass 17 cars in 25 laps, but 12 of them did kind of beach it in the tire barriers. The second, and most important I’d say, was his tires. It wasn’t mentioned much in the video, but SVG’s tires were over 20 laps newer than Haley’s and Elliott’s. Both Haley and Elliott are not locked into the NASCAR playoffs, and they both needed a win to make it in, leading to this desperation call to not pit for tires. Haley and Elliott tried their best, but their nearly 40 lap old tires weren’t going to do much to help them hold off SVG.

SVG is an amazingly talented driver who is used to these stock cars that are more about being able to send it into the corner and manage weight. People sleep on the storylines the series holds like watermelon farmer Ross Chastain, oyster fisherman Martin Truex Jr and even now Josh Berry who went from being a mechanic for Dale Earnhardt Jr to now being a cup series driver. SVG added his storyline at Chicago and can’t wait to see him onto the next chapter of his story after his amazing stint in Supercars

SVG is one of motorsport's brightest ever talents. It's almost criminal that he wasn't progressed into a top-tier single seater series or even F1 in his youth, he would be highly, highly competitive, despite his physical size.
@andrewesau51
@andrewesau51 Жыл бұрын
Nah nah screw that. F1 is a waste of a talent like that. F1 it doesn't matter how great you are if you're not in the best car you're screwed. Lando Norris for example no way he's winning a championship. Not because he's trash but because McLaren is a not a top 3 team. Even if it was it can't compete with Red Bull rn or Mercedes in the past. I'm tired of people saying F1 is the pinnacle of motorsports. For the cars yes it is but for the drivers really not. SVG is way better off coming to NASCAR or racing WEC or IMSA. And let's not discredit V8 Supercars the man is a 3 time champion of the Supercars his talent is being shown the best way it can. If SVG comes to NASCAR full time and makes a competitive career even if he doesn't win a championship. If he wins races and is inside the top 15 week in and week out and gets many top 5s and top 10s. I think that shows his talent for racing way more than riding around a mid pack team in F1. And his Supercars championships already proved that too. Unless F1 was your childhood dream I don't think any great drivers should bother wasting their time in that money pit.

The real test will be his NASCAR Truck Series debut at IRP this weekend on an oval, but he will see how good the Cup drivers really are this Sunday at Indianapolis. The Cup drivers are experienced there. There’s also no wet weather in the forecast. It’s going to be a tough fight against Chase Elliott, AJ Allmendinger, Chase Briscoe, and Tyler Reddick (if his pit crew doesn’t f*** up). Those drivers are quite good on road courses. I expect SVG to run well, but I don’t think it will be easy.

Not only have I been waiting for a video like this for NASCAR (and one for Supercars, c'mon Josh, I wanna see another Supercars video) but the fact that you've got all your facts right about drivers and teams and events and your story telling abilities made this a million times better! SVG winning this race was and will be the highlight of NASCAR this year. As a diehard Cup fan, this was super fun to watch and meant a lot to the fan base. Heck, I spent a lot of time in the last year keeping up with Supercars, so having so much knowledge of Supercars and SVG prior to this event made it even more surreal. Indy this weekend will be interesting to see with SVG, Kosteki, Kobayashi, Button, and the rest of the Cup field, but the SVG effect is definitely here in NASCAR for the better.

Fun Fact: Noah Gragson (the one in the 42 that went into the tire barriers multiple times at Chicago), recently got indefinitely suspended in NASCAR because he liked an offensive meme. He also had one of the worst rookie seasons I have ever seen, at least for NASCAR standards. It's currently rumored that his team, Legacy Motorclub (in which both NASCAR legends Jimmie Johnson and a slowly-letting-go-of-ownership Richard Petty co-own the team along with another team that merged called GMS), looked for an excuse to get rid of Gragson (hence being suspended indefinitely first by the team and then NASCAR itself). So Gragson is probably not coming back anytime soon. Edit: I think Black Flags Matter covers his downfall (the one video that Josh credited at 8:34).

If there was any regular NASCAR driver who had a similar reputation for qualifying down the order, but more than make up for it the races, it would be the final Winston Cup champion, 2003 Cup Series Champion, Matt Kenseth. Personality wise, he was kind of like Kimi Raikkonen at a Grand Prix, didn't say much in public, but he did his talking on the race track. Although there are those who are unhappy (to this day) about the way he won the Cup Series title in 2003 (his stats being 1 win, 11 top 5's, 25 top 10's and an average finish of 10.3, secured with a race to spare), he's one of the best race drivers NASCAR has ever seen

Being there and seeing it live, especially after thinking it was all going to be a wash, was absolutely incredible. We were in T11, and, being a huge SVG fan from watching the V8s for the past few years, I was getting everyone in my row hyped up every time he was another position or two further up each time he came by. I was like "we are going to see something special here" and, sure enough, he put some epic passes on in a short span of laps, before taking the lead with one of the greatest passes in nascar history. I still get chills watching the highlights. Greatest sporting event I've seen live, over playoff hockey games and F1 races.

For those that don’t follow NASCAR and now believe Noah Gragson is a talentless hack, he raced in the Xfinity Series (second best series, kind of like F2 for NASCAR) and won 4 races in a row last year, and was a serious title threat. He has had insanely awful luck this year, with a team that’s in a lame duck season before changing manufactures from Chevy to Toyota. A lot of rookie mistakes yes, but to solely blame him for an awful rookie season would be wrong.
