A few words and correction by Fabio Camorani on the tapes:
When we got the tapes we investigated a bit. The tapes have splices like session tapes. And Naxos confirmed they are the only ones, no one else have ever seen anything different. We then asked Plamcrantz (directly), confirming he never saw anything else, no memory of this. But he also cheked personally the 4 tapes and said that the 4 tapes are a safety copy of the session tapes done in 1986, without any editing, as is. The session tapes are lost and were done in Dolby A. We then got also JATP 2 and the remaining small 7" reels and they all are A. So these are the ONLY "masters" available and they are a 1:1 safety copy of the session tapes, done just reading A and recording SR. Palmcrantz confirmed and any other info is lost with Boethius. The tapes too, probably (this is not the only case...).
...and on his team:
There is a point that I want to highlight here, because it is not very clear in the video. AudioNautes Recordings (and any other brand) is made of people. ANR is a TEAM, it's not me. The Team is mentioned in all booklets and also somewhere else.
Fabio Fornari, owner of a vineyard in Italy and owner also of a great pair of ears, helping the team hear deep detail in recordings, with his monitor type system.
Pietro Benini, owner of one of the leading studios in Italy and the person responsible for the tape transfers. He owns several high-quality Otari MTR-15 reel-to-reel tape decks; his collections also includes a Studer 820, 812 and 807 among a host of other machines.
Roberto Mengozzi, whose company does high level electronic assembly (included among his projects have also been communication systems for Formula 1 racing cars). His company also assembled our electronics. Roberto is working on this project simply for the fun of it. And he is also the owner of one of those relatively rare and highly desirable Otari MTR-15 reel-to-reel tape decks.
Stefanno Ercolani, working on all artworks.
And must also mention Scott and Miles, who cut all vinyls for us, following our guidelines for "the last mile" (or the last 5%...).
I hope this clarifies who is working in ANR.

As soon as the tape started playing, even from my TV speakers on KZbin, - you instantly recognize that this is special 😯 That Studer looks gorgeous, watching you insert the tape and all the mechanics working is just a sight to behold! this is true audiophilia! I have the DSD 11.2 mhz jazz at pawnshop, but I stopped listening to digital a few years ago.. Went all-in on expensive turntable, pick-up and RIAA - best decision of my life. Reel-to-reel is where the rabbit hole ends I guess😅

@@anadialog i had just visited the legend Troels Gravesen, an affiliate of Scanspeak - he's the man who builds the speakers and crossovers and represents Scanspeak at the Hifi convention in Munich. - At this convention Troels speaker-designs (housing scanspeak drivers) are demoed in the Scanspeak showroom. I was purchasing a pair of Scanspeak speakers personally build by Troels, and he gave me a demonstration in his living room (he is a vinyl only guy) What I heard in his living room from his Ortofon Anna diamond pickup, his two monster E.A.R tube-amps running bridged, EAR RIAA, EAR Preamp. And an 80 kg turntable! Everything modded with the most exotic capacitors obtainable - and ALL internal wiring, re-point to point wired using audiophile grade cabling by the man himself. I heard something in that living room that I will take with me to my grave, completely unforgettable. Long story short, I bought the speakers, and soon after I went analogue and tube amps myself. Digital is a joke, an imposter! Why listen to a digital simulation, when you can have an actual acoustic event (the stylus in the groove) an simply amplify it directly? The simple fact that vinyl is a true acoustic event being amplified, makes it plain to understand why it sounds so much more real and authentic. This was never about THD, wow and flutter, and all the nonsensical mathematical jargon. Is it a real acoustic phenomena or not? And only vinyl can claim that feat! - You can literally hear the music from the stylus itself completely acoustically, even if you have no amp or speakers! That's as real as me strumming a guitar in my living room.

I have a lot of jazz recordings, mostly on CD. I’ve read books on jazz but somehow I missed ever hearing about this recording. I just listened to an XR CD of it on KZbin and was blown away. I don’t care if I’ve never heard of the musicians. Yes, the recording is fantastic even through KZbin but more than anything else the musicianship is top-notch and that is the magical quality that comes through on this recording. What a great interview, Guido. I thought Fabio was superb. I have a small number of UHQCDs that I bought from Japan and from the moment I played the first disc (Genesis "Foxtrot") I was smitten. The clarity, spaciousness and depth were outstanding, Peter Gabriel was singing in the room with you and the sound of the drums was extraordinarily realistic. I can't think of one UHQCD that I'm disappointed with, whether they be rock, jazz or classical - and I have a small number of each type. What does surprise me, however, is that there don't appear to be any UHQSACDs. I would love to hear them, if they exist. I'll visit Fabio's website and check out what he has to offer.

I have the Fim 32 bit set of Jazz at the pawn shop among a large collection of Jazz titles it’s certainly not my favourite however its sits in the top 10% of exceptional live recordings. I purchased this new cd release just for the heck of it , comparing them there are some obscured details on the FIM release that are much more evident on the AudioNautes release including being able to hear deeper into the venue itself . Job well done AudioNautes you surpassed the FIM issue on transparency and sound quality.

There was a company doing a similar thing in America called The Tape Project. They would make reel to reel copies of Master Tapes of famous artists. Their titles ranged from The Sidewinder by Lee Morgan to Linda Ronstadt. I think it was preferable to join the club, and at certain intervals they released more titles made available. I think there was a costly membership fee, and if you were a member you could get the tapes for I think about $400. The company stopped doing this a long while back, but the last I heard they were making the only reel to reel deck still being made; the United Home Audio tape deck which cost many tens of thousands of dollars. When your sax sound on your stereo, sounds as squeaky clean as the guy playing on the street corner, you know you got something there.

@@anadialog I'm glad you clarified. After my post I visited their website. The Tape Project appears to be shipping again. But I was on their website yesterday and it was difficult to find titles I would have wanted that were not sold out. Hard to say what did this recording so unique. Palmcrantz himself was very surprised by the success. He found some magic balance, by talent and luck (he did not have time to test anything - one of the still unpublished 7" reels has inside some trials while the group was playing...). But also the 4+1 players had some super evenings, full of fun and pathos. Some aspects went perfect all together...

I got the JATP and Cantate Domino tapes. Super sound. Definitely not cheap, even for tape. I understand that the license was much more expensive than typical. BTW, Tape Project still exists. They still are selling tapes, but haven't released a new tape in several years. United Home Audio is a separate company that makes their own tape recorders. When I started as a charter subscriber to Tape Project close to 15 years ago, the first ten albums 2 reels each were around $1200. Today they cost about $450 per 2 reel album, same price as most of Acoustic Sounds 2 reel releases.

Thanks for your very interesting and informative videos. I was just wondering in regards to the photograph of the Jazz at the Pawn Shop session tapes I noticed that they are labeled Dolby SR. From what information I’ve read online it is commonly stated that Dolby SR was introduced in 1986 for professional recordings, are the tapes photographed masters made from the original session tapes?
@anadialog
@anadialog Жыл бұрын
Good point. We know that the original session tapes were small 7" reels recorded with a Dolby A 361 system. Maybe instead of combining them they copied them on 10" reels with Dolby SR in a second moment? I will ask Fabio and hopefully we will have a reply from Naxos.
@anadialog
@anadialog Жыл бұрын
I have discussed with Fabio who at the time also spoke to Naxos. Yes, these are the original session tapes put together in 4 10" reels (1 per side of the double vinyl edition). They are filled with splicing. In some forums you may see other small Agfa 7" reels, that Fabio also has, and those belong to the so-called Late Night Jazz at the Pawnshop. There isn't a simple explanation to the presence of a Dolby SR writing and sticker. The only explanation, they told me, is that Dolby A and SR can both be used in specific cases, they are interchangeable for playback. So at a certain point they must have gotten a DOLBY SR system at Proprius and hence they marked the boxes with that name in order to play the back with that technology. Obviously we cannot be 100% certain since not even at Naxos (who now has all Proprius tapes) they know the whole story. In any case, one thig is certain, all high quality editions (FIM, 2xHD, etc etc.) are all using THOSE 4 master/session tapes. There isn't anything else.
@fabiocamorani8359
@fabiocamorani8359 Жыл бұрын
When we got the tapes we investigated a bit. The tapes have slices like session tapes. The tapes too, probably (this is not the only case...).

aside from some tape hiss, this is sterling sound, A1 all the way from stem to stern. if i had that much moolah and the king's own playback equipment, i'd get these tapes as they are precious, i hope the master tape is locked away safe in an underground vault somewhere, it needs to survive for the ages of man and whoever comes up after man along with the machinery to play it on. i would LOVE to hear the cantate domino version of these tapes. i have the original proprius CD of that and would like to hear a truer take on the original revox A77 deck which recorded it.

Proprius is very focused in perfect safe way to stock their precious masters. BIS too. I can't say the same for other labels... I found terrible conditions in the past. I always do a safety copy, the labels ask me to do it before anything else (another cost to add...). But it is also very important the type of tape. Some tapes are very very reliable, others are not, and they have drops. Not because of bad storage. I started a project from a tape done 1961. It was impossible to work on it. Its 1981 copy was by far BETTER. Some loss in some aspects, but great from all other point of view: we decided to work on this tape. In 2023 you'll see the title published.

It should be mentioned that in the US, many machines used NAB equalization instead of CCIR which were shown on the new tapes box label. Some machines such as some Revox had both choices. The playback machine must have matching EQ, or the care he takes on the tapes would not show with played with the wrong EQ.

There are many hi-fi recordings that sounds just as good as this one. By the way, I've listened to the samples at the end of this video and noticed a problem with stereo base. That is, a possible phase problem. It's either wrongly placed overheads or it's the phases of in-place mics are conflicting with the phase of overheads, or both. Anyway, the stereo image is somewhat corrupted and is sticked to the speakers. My system is Telefunken 7550 and Telefunken V-101, a good one I think.

Hi, I have the 2016 reissue version from Prophone/Proprius (PROP 7778-79) that I had paid 50€. The sound is fantastic as well as the music itself although I prefer "Masterpieces by Ellington" from ANALOGUE PRODUCTIONS (APJ 4418-45) and "WE GET REQUESTS - OSCAR PETERSON" also from ANALOGUE PRODUCTIONS (AP-8606). Unfortunately I don't have a reel to reel master tape recorder such as the Studer A820, so, I am forced to buy the vinyl from 2xHD (acousticsounds shop). The sound will probably be better than the version I have now. What do you think about it? Will we hear the difference? They deliver to France but the shipping costs $58.05 !!! You said that streaming sucks. Could it possibly have something to do with Flac or Alac? I remember a guy saying he thought Alac sounded worse than AIFF. But that Alac sounded better if he first unzipped it before playing it than if it was unzipped while playing the file. He thought that it was probably the Unpacking during listening that worsened the sound quality. maybe it's the same with Flac. Then you can make a difference between streaming or downloading from a service where you can buy music downloads. And which offers uncompressed file formats such as wav and AIFF. Then there are those that also have DSD files as downloads. But I think you should probably not use Wi-Fi but a regular decent network cable. Then it is reportedly the case that Tidal and Qobuz have significantly higher stream speeds than Amazon music. NOTE: it was about the unpacked Alac file sounding better than an unpacked Alac file. So I didn't mean that Alac would sound better than an AIFF file

Sorry, but there is no degradation when sending files online. Yes, there can be noise when playing from a PC to a DAC that you might have to take care of, even jitter (in my case from the video card drivers ) but files from one PC to another are exactly the same, be it on a HDD that you fly to Japan, on Wetransfer or sent directly peer to peer. Think about programs and games: if a small part of a file is corrupted, the whole program collapses.

They will be laughing on you if you show them sound carts from otari or studer. The second penny is lack of full bass on the recording of jazz at pawnshop. Hello It must be difficult to access the session tapes of a renowned record production, so it is debatable if the music is good or bad. The important thing is the technical aspects, that is not debatable if you have an understanding of what you are talking about and it is honest. Any DDP file for a CD contains a checksum. It is impossible that it can be corrupted by sending it by wetransfer for example. All irregularities inherent to reproduction, jitter, etc., are not applicable to the DDP. The reality is that no CDA is going to be the same as its DDP master in all ways of playback.

The sound recording really is terrific but the "jazz" mmm is just too much on the corny side for me. It begs the question am I listening to and appreciating the MUSIC or am I listening to the RECORDING? That is the pitfall many find themselves falling into- which is most important to each of us? It is of course all down to personal choice. I do know there are a number of artists and recordings I have a far greater opinion of and appreciation of as a result of hearing a superior audiophile sound recoding of a particular track or album- I haven't suddenly fallen in love with them but I have been "enlightened" Back to Jazz at the Pawnshop- YES IT IS a top class audiophile recording but is it the best? In my opinion no- I've heard at least 6 that blow it out of the water. This is a great video and a wonderful interview. So good to see someone who has such passion for the music and the quality of sound reproduction. The forensic care and highest standards of production AudioNautes apply to their releases is just mind blowing. I wish other labels paid half as much attention to quality.

When humanity’s dead and gone, our musical legacy will be those pieces, the 0.01% of any given generation, that made it into modern day repertoire. The rest of it will be forgotten. The 0.01% will deserve to be remembered not because they were the best of their day, but because they reached in and touched the humanity in our souls in a timeless fashion (as all good music does regardless of genre). They are the pieces that inspire future generations to play with their own unique take on them. For example, “In My Life” by The Beatles - listen to the version by Veronica Mortensen…it’s wildly different and that’s the essence of what makes Jazz in the Pawnshop so good a different take on classic 1930s/40s records. It’s not just about the pieces the band are playing, but also their amazing performances, because the band members are so in-sync with each other - they’re not playing a score, they’re improvising by playing off each other….that’s the essence of live jazz even to this very day with contemporary jazz and when it’s done supremely well you feel it in your bones. So you might consider asking yourself: Why has some of the best music written by humanity to date not touch you? What is stopping you growing in your musical journey? What is limiting you to a narrow perspective of what constitutes good and relevant music worth listening to? My advice is don’t follow the herd, because 99.99% of music today is made for the herd and most of it will be forgotten in the decades/centuries to come. Start by dropping your biases. Start by being inquisitive. Seek the best and try and understand why history as put it on a pedestal; let it rub off on you.

Regarding HiFi equipment, you’re absolutely wrong… If all you want to do is listen to music, then you can do that with a pocket radio or earbuds on your smartphone. What high quality audiophile equipment allows is the possibility of replaying the world’s greatest live acoustic performances in a way that transports you back to that venue in that time. Therefore, audiophile gear is a means to a very specific end goal, but it starts with high quality recordings that are distinctly lacking in most contemporary music. If you listen to the first 38 seconds (the intro) of Jazz at the Pawnshop vol.1, you’ll hear the ambience of the jazz club and on good equipment it’s like you’re in audience in 1976. Then the last 20% of Limehouse Blues you’ll hear the band improvising off each other and the reaction of the audience loving it…superb!

@@GodfreyMann Thanks for the highly patronizing and presumptive response. I am a huge fan of many genres of music, but to me, JATP is popular with audiophiles for one reason only, its recording quality. That's why I asked if you owned any other Arne Domnerus records. If this is such great music making, surely you would want to explore some of his other work. JATP is the ultimate example of Holt's Law, first coined by Stereophile founder J Gordon Holt. He said that there is an inverse relationship between the quality of a performance, and the quality of the recording. This is it, an amazing recording of a pedestrian performance at best. If you're a huge fan of Limehouse Blues as a composition, how about this recording, with Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane both on fire trading amazing solos. I'm sorry to tell you, but Domnerus and Lars Erstrand, fine as they are, just don't function on this level. Surely, if it's "all about the music", this is a preferable version to listen to. Unfortunately, too many audiophiles are more interested in hearing how far behind their speakers the ca-ching of the cash register sounds, and the tinkling of the cocktail glasses, than in the actual music being played. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpLUZniMnaqApKc

Sorry to say that I tried many times and I heard differences. Believe me that I would prefer to avoid to send an HDD to Japan several times a year. However, everytime I send files I risk some mod. Why call it a mistake? Maybe its your lack of knowledge. Always ask why something is so. Let's stop carrying on common misconceptions and old prejudice and understand the problem before jumping to conclusions. I am not saying I am always write but I do ask people to stop reiterating other's preconceived ideas. Digital comes along several errors which are immediately compensated, that makes you think that the file is identical, but it isn't it's like interpolation in CD reading. We must drop the idea of digital is perfection, just 1s and 0s. It isn't like that. Any engineer can tell you that. There is a wealth of filtering, noise shaping, dithering, antialiasing, interpolation, jitter and dozens of other things that occur. Internet is extremely polluted making clean trasfers more difficult. The problem is that digital selfs-correct and you cannot see where this is happening and the result is that the sound slightly changes. Subtle things of course, but those details make the recording faithful. It comes as no surprise that high end streaming systems have special modem/routers, all cabled, no wifi. This is in fact reason why almost any CD will sound better than streaming. This is part of the digital disease processing I was talking about here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qX6piJ-sl7eMmqM

no question it's an amazing recording; but the fact still remains: the music itself is average AT BEST! The problem some audiophiles have sometimes is that they listen to music for the recording quality FIRST and the musical quality second.

We may agree or disagree on the quality of the music. And not all musicians are Coltrane. But also sometimes audiophile has test discs. And if super well recorded and ok enough, why not? I always enjoy this disc, since 80s. The feeling I get from this disc of beyond its quality. My very personal opinion.

Very interesting but c'mon shipping the hard drive is absolutely overkilling. You can just compute an md5 checksum for the original file and do the same for the transferred copy and compare them. If they're both equal then both files are deterministically identical. I can buy the thing about jitter, clocks, compression, time domain, etc, but this asynchronous transfer is basic digital stuff. This is the kind of thing that objetivists use for calling us "audiofools".

Well, I just tried. And the result is sometimes very different. That "sometimes" is making it out of control. I do not know why but this is what I found. I can't base the result on being lucky. So I invite you all to try. The UHQCD plant is also suggesting the HDD as best way and for best sound. They also tried. You know, it's not about theory but about practice. Maybe I can't see why, but trying I discovered this. So I do this way. Simply.

@@fabiocamorani8359 Maybe you were not doing this md5 checksum in every transfer. I can assure you that if you apply this verification methodically, both at origin and at destination, you will be sure that you are working exactly with the same bytes, i.e. with an identical file. Please, don't get me wrong. I know that in audio not everything is what it seems and sometimes the best tool for the job is your own ears. But not in this particular case when it comes to file transfering and checksum based verification. On the other hand, I personally own some of your works, for example La Spagna , and they are amazing!. Congrats for your hard work!.

I wish it was so simple. Digital comes along several errors which are immediately compensated, that makes uou think that the file is identical, but it isn't it's like interpolation. So you can still hear the track but something has changed. Subtle thinks of course, but those details make the recording faithful. It comes as no surprise that high end streaming systems have special modrm/routers, all cabled, no wifi. This is in fact reason why almost any CD will sound better than streaming.

@@anadialog Guido, with all respect, that can be true during reproduction taking into consideration that it is a dynamic process. Yes, sure, errors can happen as it occurs on CD reading but we are not talking about reproduction here. We are talking about file transfering. Networks are not perfect and some packets can be lost but these lost packets can be retrieved using retries. You cannot do that during playback but you can when copying a file over a network. As I said, the md5 checksum of the file is absolutely deterministic and if this code is the same, both files are identical. Period. If this wasn't like that, encryption protocols wouldn't work and internet transactions would be completely unsecure. Please focus on what really matters, from recording to mastering, not in these minor things that make objetivists laugh about we audiophiles.

Yes please do! I agree! BUT BUT take notes on how to do it and with what. 99% of modern recordings can only dream of what engineers were doing in the 50's and 60's, and some recordings in the 70's like this one.

Jeff Beck and now David Crosby. I think the equipment is available and I think there are a lot of great musician who would love to be recorded in pure analog. I think a top notch producer with some great analog equipment could talk a lot of great acts into recording live fir short-run releases. Do you think someone like Neal Young might do a live greatest hits acoustic set, maybe. Stop looking for the dead and start recording the living.

@@paulinboston if everyone had your attitude then there’d be no point in recording the living, because once they’re dead then no one will listen to the recordings…kind of a waste of time recording them in the first place, no? Agreed Jazz in the Pawnshop isn’t an important recording like “Kind of Blue”, but most people don’t listen to a recording just because it’s important. It’s not like any of the live concerts being played everyday are important, but people still pay top dollar to go. May be listening music is about enjoyment than importance?

@@GodfreyMann I think by the word "Important"he might have meant and better used the phrases: music that stands out from the crowd, music that doesn't sound like a thousand other things, music that explores new ground and will carve out a memorable notch in history because of it. I am not saying those things, because I have never heard Jazz At The Pawnshop. Being so biased and a fan of great sound; I'd probably love it, if the music and playing is good. The recordings that impress me the most are ones with layering and the audiophile process unravels the orchestral fabric like my first moving coil cartridge did. Or unravels the layering on rock productions or Jazz, especially Big Band.

The Proprius tapes are well-known for their high audio quality. I use them as reference recordings because you know how they should sound. I don't listen to them for the music because the styles of performance are dated and the musicianship wasn't always great. These luxury edirions are probably aimed at people who already paid hundreds of thousands for their systems. Fancy packaging and laser etching clearly does not affect the sound quality.
