In my experience no. I tried a cheap no-name chinese distortion pedal on a solid state amp sound really bad. But when I tried it on a Fender tube amp sounds great. So I started watching the JHS videos about a year ago and by now, most I know about pedals, I learned here. Switched from a line6 board to all stompboxes since and I'm super happy although my wallet hates josh. Pretty much the first pedal I bought last year actually was a guyatone chorus, but the mc3 micro thingy, guess that's from a later series. Found it in a pawn shop in athens on vacation, then I found another pedalshop there and so in the end I went home broke but very happy. The guyatone remains on the board and I love it and I've been waiting on a guyatone episode. Normally I never comment on YT videos, but since I'm convinced I have always been in quarantine by now, why not. Love the content, cheers! Also sorry for rambling

I can't say it's my fave from '79 as I find it hard to choose, but "Three Imaginary Boys" which is the Cure's debut record is a classic to me. I read somewhere that the #SuperPhaseSonic Script was made before the Rolly Phase Box because it's the same as the Vox Phase 1900 (that was apparently made by Guyatone). It would be the only one of its kind (so no pre-series). The Super Phase Sonic differs from the Rolly Phase Sonic from its on-off knob that apparently reverses the phase… I have no idea if any of this is accurate, but the #JHS pedal police should investigate ASAP…

When I was 11 or 12, in 1991or 2, I had been listening to the requisite Pop of the day all throughout elementary school. My three tapes at that point were (in order) Michael Jackson-Thriller, Belinda Carlisle-Heaven Is A Place On Earth, and Paula Abdul-Forever Your Girl. (In hindsight I also had the "Cocktail" soundtrack) Then I found a basket of old cassettes dubbed from record that my Dad's buddy who had a great record collection made for him as payment for a poker debt. The first one I pulled out said only "The Wall." I popped it in (miraculously on side one), listened to the needle crackle for a few long seconds before the first chord hit, and INSTANTLY became a teenager. The solo in "Mother" is the sole reason I begged for an electric guitar that Christmas. I still haven't learned it.

In 1979 The Greg Kihn Band released In The Naked Eye, which may or may not have been the best record, but it marks the time that I discovered that a lot of lesser-known bands didn't have roadies. Growing up, the local heroes were Earthquake, and Yesterday And Today. Hollywood pirated one of Robbie Dunbar's tunes and that got them a few bucks to start Bezerkley Records. Checking out their roster I saw that several of my favorite bands were playing around and started going to live shows, which featured opening acts. (Funny how much The Squares were doing exactly what Joe Satriani does today, but could hardly get bookings.) Then I found out that many people, and guitarists in particular, were often willing to let some healthy young volunteer move their big tube combos and such and that I could avoid getting asked for ID, or even get an occasional free beer out of going in with the band. Not a lot of local rock scenes where I am now, I don't think a guy could make much of a living at it. The Rubinoos put a new album out recently and Chuck Prophet has one out this month, so all is not lost. 🎸

I like to emulate a guitar by running my MicroMoog through a multi-effects box (Boss SE50/SE70, Yamaha FX500). How about a video on some of the better multi-effect boxes for guitarists? Might be blasphemy to some, but having distortion, delay, modulation, etc. all in one box is useful when touring or in the studio. In 1987, I went into the local music store and spied a used Pearl DD-33 Analog Delay pedal in the display case. Two in one! So, of course, I bought it. Not sure if they were affiliated with the drum company or not. I loved that pedal. I spent hours just creating wild and weird sounds by manipulating the two different delay feedback knobs. Great fucking pedal. My bass player at the time asked if he could borrow it. Several weeks later he brings it back, in pieces. It never worked again, the imbecile damaged all the components. Its things like this that make most people hate most bass players. I think I paid $35 for it in '87. Right now on Reverb, they go for around $350-$500. :(
