Again this is the best because Eric himself is smiling while playing. He is into this. But there are so many versions even by Eric to say which one is the absolute, because they have captivated me all the way back since he played with Duane. Royal Albert Hall was a great rendition. Let's just say that Eric Clapton is by far one of the best in rock and roll history. Top Shelf kind of musician!

Appreciation of music is subjective. I am a die-hard Clapton fan and one of the greatest privileges I've ever experienced was seeing Eric, Andy, Nathan, Steve and Dave perform in Toronto a few years ago. Unbelievable!!! That said it is unfair to expect everybody else to enjoy the same brand of music as me. I don't understand why somebody who dislikes a song would spend several minutes listening to it in the first place. If you don't like it, move on and let those who do share the beauty.

Derek and the Dominos... is hind-sight. EC was in England, he had just left Blind Faith in 1970 when Bobby, Carl and Jim from Delaney & Bonnie called him up... They form a band add in Duane go into the studio and produce this lp. They tour it just once - and had light reception - I think is because people expected blues jams rather than songs with a tight structure. Most of the material Clapton came up with on the lp was about Patty Boyd - Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad, I am yours... Bell Bottom Blues, lol was because Patty asked Eric to get her some bell-bottoms while he was in the states. So, Duane was asked to put in more effort in the band and he said he can't do it - stays with the Allmans. By '71 the band falls apart, Duane dies. the band splits... and Eric pretty much takes off for three years. In late '72 some college stations pick up the lp and start playing it... before you know it, it's played all over the place. The song Eric wrote, Duane came up with the intro and chorus riff and Jimmy with his girlfriend(Rita Coolidge) the end.
@geneobrien890710 жыл бұрын
One correction: it was the AM stations that picked up on the song 1-2 years after the album’s release. The college stations as well as the FM stations had been playing the album since it was first released. As with the Moody’s Nights In White Satin, Cream’s Sunshine Of Your Love and other album cuts from the late 60’s & early 70’s, they received AM airplay long after their respective album’s were issued. AM radio and the general population was way behind the curve.

If Duane had not gotten involved the LP may never have happened either!
@mattf4900610 жыл бұрын
correction...Duane asked if he could watch a session after Clapton saw the Allman Bros play a free concert in Miami in aug/1970...Clapton said only if you come and play.. invited him to jam and through that he helped add the intro to Layla....Greg Allman relates the events in his autobiography
@cravinbob10 жыл бұрын
Matt Foster On page 80 Guitar player magazine Duane is quoted as to how "Layla" album and his involvement came about. Clapton himself was interviewed at some point elsewhere and he also wrote about the sessions. He had stated they were not getting anything done and going nowhere. No motivation. Then they went to see the Allmans perform and that is when Eric jumped on the opportunity to have Duane sit in on a song or two. That is all Duane intended as well but Duane was there for most it. We all have to realize that our memories are not as accurate as we think. The closer to the event the better the memory but time changes things. Gregg remembers but although he was part of the history his recollections are, as anyone else's will be, influenced by attitude and opinion. It is normal and natural. An example that I was witness to was the final Hendrix Experience show. I saw what I saw and Noel Redding was there of course but his memory of the final song and stage exit was inaccurate. I was a few feet away but I was not busy playing bass and being miffed at Jimi for not telling me I was going to be fired! I can say that I do not remember what he was wearing until some photos surfaced recently but being there was huge moment for me. Bottom line is what we are told may have basis in truth but it is not always accurate. "Eyewitness news" is a phrase that makes me laugh to myself whenever I hear it!

Some people say that Jimmy Hendrix is the best player ever. Many of us claim that Eric Clapton is the best! They are both extremely talented artists and I for one don't want to compare apples to oranges. Both have unique styles and I prefer Eric Clapton's style. However I wound never give up an opportunity to go to the past and listen to the late/great Jimmy Hendrix.

its easy, Jimmy Page is the best ;)
@1984hereweare8 жыл бұрын
The HUGE difference is that Jimi Hendrix NEVER had a music lesson and played the guitar, upside down and backwards, for only 12 years. He had to take a year off while in Vietnam, so he was a musician for 13 years. I challenge anyone alive today to do that. So, while I agree that Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page are exceptional guitarists, and I love both of their music, I think that Jimi Hendrix truly had a gift from God and EXCEPTIONAL talent (so do Page and Clapton). I try to play the guitar to this day, and if I had started at age zero, with music lessons every day, I never would have anywhere near the talent that Hendrix possessed in his very short career, and I am guessing that no one else on this thread would either. I am 52 years old. What Jimi had truly was a gift from God. Too bad that God wanted him back so soon, if only for entertainment ;-) If you are only listening to the albums published while Jimi was alive (which are basically trash compared to his true talent), I strongly suggest that you look into the albums that recently (last 5 years or so ) have been published by the estate. Martin Scorsese also has published a great condensation of Jimi's real work; a great album that will make you truly appreciate this genius' work. He truly was a very gifted musician, even with no formal training. Something to look into.
@DavidSmith-ss1cg8 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that Hendrix was an exceptional talent, and musical contemporaries all agree Jimi was connected almost directly to God - he was endlessly inventive and resourceful - and, he worked hard at it. I must disagree with some of what you say; Hendrix never participated in America's adventure in Vietnam. It is also very wrong to call his recordings in his lifetime "basically trash" because much of the "buried treasure" output(found after his unfortunate demise) was nowhere near as good(there was flashes of brilliance, but none of the focus) and some was even remixed with other musicians added later.

I told you right?

The greatest Layla ever cannot possibly be one without a slide guitar, which is precisely what made the original so great.

I haven’t read all the comments, but I loved, loved, loved this! Made me tear up. While it is a slightly older version than the original, how beautiful. We get it a little more as we grow older, and I think that’s reflected in this video. Love it. Not reading any other posts.

Layla always sounds great. Especially the beginning, with the cool guitar riff. Im thinking what makes Clapton so good is his consistent quality. Always great!!

The song requires Duane Allman, without him it is something different. Derek and Dominoes version will always be the best.

UNBELIEVABLE THE GREATEST!! NOT ONLY THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYER WHAT A HUMAN BEING THIS MAN IS! THESE TREATMENT CENTERS THAT HE HAS OPENED UP FOR PEOPLE THAT STRUGGLE WITH SUBSTANCE ISSUES ALL PAID FOR BY HIM SO THESE PEOPLE CAN GET THEMSELVES RIGHT AT HIS EXPENSE PROBLEMS ALL THE CHARITIES REACHING OUT TO THE MUSIC COMMUNITY FOR HELP IN THESE CAUSES AND ALSO NOT HAVING SUCH A BIG HEAD YEAH THEY CALLED THEM GOD FOR A REASON BUT HE NEVER TOOK IT THAT WAY HAVING OTHER MUSICIANS AND VOCALISTS PLAY ALONG WITH HIM SO THEY COULD SHOW OFF THEIR TALENTS AND ALL OF IT IS SO PERFECTLY EXECUTED A TRUE PERFECTIONIST!! I JUST SAW A CONCERT THAT HE DID THIS LAST SEPTEMBER 17TH IN HOUSTON AT 77 YEARS OLD UNBELIEVABLE THIS GUY IS NEVER LOST ONE STEP HE LOVES HIS CRAFT HIS PASSION AND THOSE GUITARS AND THAT VOICE VERY POWERFUL VERY POWERFUL!!🎸🎶🎤🎸🎤🥁🎼🎇🎸🎸🎇

I'll never forget when I was a kid, maybe 14 or 15 watching the Johnny Cash show. I saw Duane Allman blow Eric off the stage and Eric blow Carl Perkins off the stage. As better that Eric was over Perkins, Allman was over Clapton. I didn't know anything about him until that night. I'll never forget it. And they were all great!!

Duane Allman never appeared on television with Eric Clapton - NEVER.

Great live version of this song. Clapton is probably the only artist that has many versions of the same song. Others play the same thing exactly each time.

This is a great song that was played to death in the 70's to the point where, at that time, I was going to vomit if I had to hear it one more time. Now, it brings back good memories and this is a good rendition of it. Glad to see that Clapton survived to have a long career. The man has been through a lot.

Liked this one well enough, hated the slower version he insisted on doing forever after, and still like the studio version of this one, the best. Just a personal preference.

Thanks for that. I saw him with Buddy Guy just walking onto stage in Chicago. It was almost better than Zeppelin in '76.
