The current Styx lineup is not only musically phenomenal, but the camaraderie is so evident. DDY is a great musician, but if he stayed, STYX would have imploded. Gowens energy on stage is incredible.

Interesting. My sister saw them in Florida and before they went on Tommy was walking through the venue and took a french fry out of her cup , smiled, said thanks, and walked towards the stage. Just a fun guy who loves the fans and playing still. By the way Styx has an amazing drummer, Todd Sucherman, as good as they get in rock music imo, a rock.

Hard to replace DeYoung and his unmistakable voice, but they scored with Gowan. I had no problem seeing Lawrence show off his keyboard skills and he did quite well vocally...

John “J.C.” Curulewski was an American musician and one of the original members of the rock band Styx. He was born on October 3, 1950, and passed away on February 13, 1988. Early Career and Styx Curulewski joined the Chicago-based band TW4 in 1969, along with college friends Dennis DeYoung, Chuck Panozzo, and John Panozzo. The group evolved into Styx by 1972. During his time with Styx, Curulewski contributed to the band’s early success, including their debut album “Styx” in 1972. Departure from Styx In 1975, Curulewski left Styx, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. However, according to band members, his departure was also due to creative differences and a sense of inferiority. He was replaced by guitarist Tommy Shaw, who would go on to become a key member of the band. Legacy Despite his relatively short time with Styx, Curulewski’s contributions to the band’s early sound and success are undeniable. His guitar playing and songwriting skills helped shape the band’s style and direction during their formative years. Trivia Curulewski’s departure from Styx was a significant turning point for the band, leading to a period of creative renewal and a new direction with Tommy Shaw on board. Curulewski’s death in 1987 was a tragic loss for the music world, and he is still remembered by fans and fellow musicians as a talented and influential guitarist. Yeah, Styx had 4 triple platinum albums in a row - with Dennis DeYoung. I like and appreciate Gowan but cannot follow Styx any more.

There was something about DeYoung's voice/style that grated on me. But no denying his talent.

In the documentary they point out that Styx became a commercial band because local dj's agreed to play 'lady' a cheesy ballad, every day until it was a hit.

Seeing Styx without Dennis would be like buying a Hemi GTX with no Hemi but a 318 in it's place.

I've seen this "version" of Styx and the Dennis DeYoung version. If I have to choose, it would be the Dennis DeYoung version. I grew up listening to the original Styx, so my views are probably tainted.

Okay, I have nothing against Larry G. I am happy for him that he has the gig. However, it misrepresents the facts to infer that Styx was revitalized by him, at least by popularity. When Styx reunited in the late 1990s (which included Dennis), they were selling out large venues pretty much everywhere they played. It may have revitalized Tommy and JY personally when they booted Dennis out of the band because they discovered they could make enough money without Dennis. In my opinion, if the current Styx began to lose audience numbers and Tommy's and JY's income began to suffer, they would BEG Dennis to come back!

As the saying goes 'it is what it is". Criticizing somebody for not being somebody else seems like a bizarre way to spend time. I never cared for Styx, Gowan is just as good a songwriter, or was. Styx is just his backing band. Nothing stopping Dennis Deyoung from making more music. Do ANY of these people still make new music? But bite your tongue, "known professionally as Gowan". When of course he named an album "Call me Larry".

I really like Lawrence alot. I know some hardcore styx fans that still talk shit about him and you what, fu*k them. If you have to keep talking about we got to get Dennis back then as Billy Joel once said go ahead and cry in your coffee but don't come bitchin' to me. I love the way the band is now.

Styx would be doing horrible Broadway show tune covers if DDY was still with them. Thank *GAWD* Gowan came along to fill that role and help bring the band back to the rocking prog/pomp roots. The last two Styx albums ("The Mission" and "Crash of the Crown") are among the best in their catalogue, regardless of line-up. Period!

If you took a poll right now I’m pretty darn sure that DeYoung would beat Gowan as far as both vocal quality and popularity. If anyone “Brought Styx back “ if they left in the first place it would be Shaw and JY staying. When Gowan first came aboard he came up with the gimmick of the “spinning keyboard “ as a way of helping fans to forget Dennis. I personally thought it was silly. Either way Styx has survived. I had the pleasure of meeting Tommy when he left Styx. He was out in support of the “Girls With Guns” LP. He is a very nice person. I was born in 1957 so I like you experienced the best music there ever was. As always John keep up the great work. …Bob from Scranton Pa.

Tommy and JY walked away because Dennis almost killed the bad with Roboto and the little play he wrote for himself and got some of the band to play Characters. They felt like fools. Lost half of their fan base. When the tour ended Tommy walked away. It wasn't his sound anymore. The rest just followed because they couldn't work with Dennis. He wanted to make all the decisions be the band leader.

I have seen STYX more times than I could say. I know their manager Charlie Brusco and have been dubbed by him, a super fan. I sadly never met John, but have met all the other members. All of them are down to earth good people. There is no doubt that Tommy coming on was what made them the band they are today. Without Tommy they might have been a one hit wonder band!
