This is such a wonderful series. As an information professional who works in an academic library I absolutely love your advocacy and use of public library resources! We don’t always have to buy every book we can if there is a more affordable option that we as a public already have access to through our public libraries. Add the fact that your are so open with sharing your exploration into literary and visual works published in book format is welcomed.

the excerpt was the most powerful moment in this video for me, being old and tuckered. i truly get what he's trying to get across

One of the main characteristics that draws the viewer in apart from the compositions is the time period that these amazing photos were captured. It will be interesting to see what stands the test of time in the next 30-40 years.

Henri Cartier-Bresson was masterful, that's for sure. I love looking at his photos, learning from them. Considering they are "only" 35mm negatives, in some of his books - like The Decisive Moment, the prints are very big showing just what 35mm negatives are capable of. For me though, there is another street photographer I cherish a bit more. Saul Leiter, who shot color slides as early as the 1940's and up until he went digital, I believe, resulting in an archive of about 40,000 slides. Books like the new one "The Unseen Saul Leiter", simply blow me away. He knew and understood conventional composition, but disregarded it completely in most of his street photography. His skills when it comes to layers and the use of reflections is outstanding - and he did it using color slide film(!)

The amazing thing is how accurate his compositions are, particularly how multiple things line up in shot. It's very easy to get parallax error with a rangefinder, yet he seems to nail it on the move quite often

You should take a look at The impassioned eye (2003), my all time favorite documentary about a photographer (Cartier-Bresson). And If you haven't seen it, "An inner silence - The portraits of Henri Cartier-Bresson", a magnificent photobook that really inspires you to take more portraits :)

Great video! I’m going to look for this book. As a side note for “completists”, Ansel Adams wrote a fourth book related to the Camera/Negative/Print series called “Polaroid Land Photography”. Not exactly part of the series, but the copy I have is formatted identically, so I consider it related. The subject matter is now obsolete, but it’s an interesting read nonetheless. Cheers!
