The Marichal/Roseboro dual was pretty savage, too.

I was 9 this summer and really in to the Cardinals season as they came very close to winning the pennant instead of the Dodgers that year. My love of baseball card collection had already started and knew the names of the starting players of all the teams. I sure remember all these players well but even though I did not remember this game I recently read about it in a library book on the career of Warren Spahn. It's amazing how old was Warren Spahn in this game to pitch so well and of course young Juan Marichal really became a great pitcher as well. This was such an awesome game also considering how good were the hitters on their teams.

It was said that Warren hurt his shoulder in that game. Though he won 23 games that year, the next year he only won 6 games.

there is never going to be well pitched duel ever again. i wrote a book report about this game when in high school(1983) my teacher thought it was fictional and gave me an A

😂 I don’t blame her. This game was insane

Warren Spahn also gave up Willie Mays' first ever hit, which was also a home run

Sandy Koufax's perfect game vs the Cubs in 1965 is also up there. 1 total hit, 2 total baserunners between Koufax & Hendley

Second time this has been mentioned in the comments and I couldn’t agree more. Also Koufax had one of if not the best perfect game ever

This was still a great duel. Imagine being 23 years old, standing on the mound in extra innings & telling your manager "You're not pulling me out"

The greatest pitchers duel was when Koufax threw his perfect game, and the dodgers only got one hit in that same game.
@Sparkball2 жыл бұрын
Certainly a good candidate! Bob Hendley only allowed one unearned run in that game while allowing one hit and one walk with 3 strikeouts Sandy was just perfect with 14 Ks. That game was awesome

He also pitched a 3 hitter on the 7th game of the world series on 2 days rest. Harmon Killebrew said it was the greatest game he ever saw pitched

A few days after this game, I was a 12 year old baseball fanatic whose dream came true: I was at the All Star Game in Cleveland. Spahn and Marichal were on the NL squad, but neither of them pitched in the game. Willie Mays was the MVP of the game, won by the National League 5-3. I've read that some years after the Spahn-Marichal duel, Mays and Spahn met at some event. Mays asked if Spahn remembered that game. Spahn replied, "Yeah. You went 1 for 6".

@@Sparkball I did enjoy it a lot. Thank you for posting it. Spahn is my favorite left handed pitcher of all time (Bob Gibson is my favorite righty), and one of my prize possessions is a baseball autographed by Spahn.

At one point the Giant's manager went out to take Marichal out of the game, and Marichal refused saying if that 42 yr old can pitch, then so can I. I think Warren Spahn pitched 458 complete games !!!

Actually just looked it up -- 382 complete games, but Cy Young pitched 749 complete games

@@Sparkball Partly ... Koufax injured his left hand and elbow at some time before he became a dominant pitcher, and I think that contributed to his arthritis. I was a sophomore in high school when he retired. I nearly cried when I heard the news.

No way the greatest ever. Great, but the greatest occurred on May 1, 1920. Joe Oeschger of the Braves and Leon Cadore of the Dodgers both pitched complete games in a 1-1 tie...which lasted 26 Innings before being called for darkness! Spahn and Marichal weren't even close.
