Harvey Haddix pitched a perfect game for 12 innings against the Braves who had the best offense in the major leagues at the time. The heart of the order for Milwaukee Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, and Joe Adcock had more than 1600 career home runs between them and they couldn't get a base runner for 12 innings despite the fact that the Braves bullpen was stealing signs. Haddix ultimately lost the game, but when you listen to what other players said about his performance that night to me that ranks as one of the single greatest pitched games ever.

@@ottismymann It was the greatest game ever pitched. A 12 inning perfect game! In the 13th, Adcock hit a home run with two out and 2 on (by an error, then an intentional walk). But Aaron (on first base) thought the ball was caught, and ran off the field, causing Adcock to be called out when he passed up Aaron - 3 outs. The next day, the commissioner called Adcock's home run a ground rule double. This allowed the runner from second base to score and win the game.
@dgchristensen771 Жыл бұрын
The box score reads 12 2/3 because Adcock was the 2nd out. It went Matilla on by Hoak's error, Mathews sacrifices him to 2nd, they intentionally walk Aaron to set up the force and possible DP. Adcock homered, Aaron touched 2nd and left the field because Mantilla had scored. Adcock is called out for passing Aaron on the bases, somewhere between 2nd and 3rd. But think about that game, 4 times through the 1959 Braves lineup perfectly. Certainly more impressive than a lot of strkeouts while giving up hits and runs. BTW, the winning pitcher also threw a complete game, which reminds me of the 16 inning 1-0 game between Spahn and Marichal, that may also deserve this list.

There are actually many instances of pitchers throwing fewer pitches in a complete game than Maddux. Red Barrett (1944) threw a 2-hit shutout in 58 pitches against the Reds, which is the Major League record. If you want post-2000 examples for more reliable pitch-count data, Carlos Silva (2005) and Aaron Cook (2007) both had 74-pitch complete games. Maddux's is just more famous because he's Maddux (and because he did it against his former Cubs)... he gave up 5 hits and a run that game, though, so it wasn't exactly pure domination like all the others in this video.
