Personally I fallow different canon on this subject. Asia as far as I recall is fan design. Though it could be seen as fallow up to Baton Rouge class, what probably was Kalvin era version of Ceres class (SS Bonaventure). What in fact has tendency of missing due to time travel tendencies of Archer Drive. Which is why Jonathan Archer caned it. Asia theoretically can be later variant. Though at the time Starfleet get far larger in scope due to universal adaptation by Federation. And even Conie quite fast become too small. There is also a Loknar (NX) Derivative known simply as "Class J cruiser" (term "class J" as reference to old freighter is Trek equivalent of word "junk"). One famous for being involved in incident with Pike. But that is clearly larger ship, of which Conie was direct fallow UP. Technically Decatur class was direct replacement for Conie, solving one of major design flaws of this class. Shangri-la could be a variant. But this class was at the time already dead. As side note. In context of Strange New World. Excelsior was replacement for Sombra class. Not the original Constitution.

I like you using the TIE Fighter analogy - I've always thought the Fighter Mafia's 'Blitzfighter' concept was basically a TIE in real life, and the whole idea was them basically j*^*ing themselves off over what awesome manly pilots they imagined themselves to be (or in the case of Sprey wished they were). An Admiral promoting the Vesper-class as a fantasy to let him relieve his imagined glory days (of a successful raid where he got lucky against incompetent opposition, a la Battle of Lissa), is a good parallel for Star Trek.

TIE fighters drive me nutes because they just don't make sense in setting, there are never enough to fully swarm an opponent, I cannot believe that maintaining an over sized training and manufacturing pipeline is cheaper than just bolting a shield generator on and it with leave you front line warships either tied to logistics bases as they swing back to resupply with TIE's every engagment or dangerously lacking on fighter cover. Then in every bit of media they try and solve a problem they made (since shielded starfighters were the norm in the clone wars) with a bunch of heavier, upgunned and shielded TIE variants when anyone whose ever played X-Wing Balance of power can tell you the solution was to bolt a shield generator onto a TIE interceptor which instantly made it the most dangerous fighter in spade. @@venomgeekmedia9886 Don't really think in this case as the Conni III is essentially the Shangra La class just bigger and meaner, Think what happened is someone knew the Conni-Mafia was likely going to push eventually another attempt of shoving that pathetic design again and basically got to starfleet first proposing a updated version of the Shangra-La class bigger meaner, and capable, then slapped Conni III title on it to basically humiliate the Conni-Mafia. At least in Picards timeline its the case. In STO that little gremlin did make it into service only cause the Federation was in a conflict with the Klingons and everything else that happened prior to that, that the conni-mafia got what they wanted and had the vespa built and in numbers too. The only saving grace is that by the time your character enters the game and goes up rank these embarrassments apparently were at the cusp of being phased out as the Federation started introducing newer ship designs. I have a headcanon that the Constitution class was accompanied by a massive infrastructure build out, and that everything was designed around a certain maximum size. The Excelsiors would be the maximum. Eventually the Federation would leap past that, and with ships like the Galaxy providing their own maintenance the need for "drydocks" was lessened. But every so often they'd make a smaller ship, something like Constitution, Excelsior, or Intrepid, that was meant for short durations and maxed out those old facilities. And I think the Vesper fits that idea perfectly. Also, maybe the Vesper was meant for export to Federation allies. No sensitive technologies, but still a big stick should the Klingons/Romulans try something sneaky.

Lasers as well as phasers. Think about it. You can easily see ships through their shields which means light easily passes into and out of shields. A good high powered laser (which is only light) could be used to damage a ships shield grid and then follow up with phasers (which are charged nadion particles) through the weakened or eliminated shield area to start carving up the hull of the enemy ship.

A ship of that type could have useful compliment to Excelsior, in the presence mission and numbers also called the high low mix like the F15 and F16 in the US Air Force. Wouldn't the Shangri La class be more comparable to the Andor class than Connie?
