This is an excellent review. Having recently bought one, I agree with most of his opinions. It is a great car to drive. The best driving 40+ year old car I've ever had. It drives beautifully and does give so much pleasure to others that see it. All you need is the suspension bits replaced with new ones (which any older car should have anyways) and a good after-market exhaust. Unfortunately most people just repeat the bad information they have read and think they are horrible cars.

I was in High School and sat in a DMC12 on the showroom floor in 1981. In my opinion , It's the greatest design of any car. Thank you for taking us on a drive...so exciting!

When I was in my early 20's I was working at a fast food place in northern Michigan, and a Delorean came through the drive through. I was very excited to see it. At least now I can say I've seen one up close, in person. I wouldn't mind owning one some day. Thank you.

the biggest issue with this car was the expectations from the public. Because John built the GTO, people really seemed to think this car would be another one of those. These cars are sports cars, they are meant to just be fun to drive. The other big issue is most of them sit and don't get driven. The overall experience of driving one is a lot of fun. I'm over 6 foot tall, and about 290 lbs, and I can fit in and just enjoy. They really are a lot of fun. The nice thing about these cars is how easy you can still open the doors if someone parks really close to you. The only downside to one of these cars that really is hard to deal with..........if you drive a time machine one.....the time circuits switch get's in the way while shifting gears, along with the temporal time display. If you don't hold the gear shift correctly you can hurt your hand. Also, there is nowhere to rest your hand/arm while driving. That's about the worse, overall they really are fun, fun cars.

Glad to see people are valuing them nowadays. I worked as the auto body quality control guy in California and worked on hundreds of them. There were at least two pages of retrofits from the time the DMC12s left Dunmurray until they got to us. So the cars were from the beginning individual, at least mechanically, depending on who worked on them and what combination of retrofits got done or not done. Not surprising that no two are alike now. Your particular example looks pretty dialed in or sorted as you Brits quip.

Very interesting BUT, as you pointed out, this is now a modified and improved car. The cars reputation stems from contemporary road tests of the day. I especially recall reading that of CAR magazine from 1981 - which also contained the first impressions of the Lotus Esprit NA S3. Not to put too fine a point on it, the DeLorean was slower, didn't handle as well and (IIRC) was more expensive. I bought the Esprit and absolutely loved it. I kinda wish I'd never sold that car but that's another story... The Stainless Steel panels on the DMC-12 were/are a fingerprint magnet (for those with that particular OCD) and potential repairs could have been/be a bit of a challenge. Interior quality was probably par for the course for an early 80's car. My Esprit was cloth trimmed and I'd say 'different' rather than 'better'. 160 BHP was enough for a car to feel brisk even in the 90's. The Esprit was rated at 160BHP and it's handling meant that corner speeds could be maintained and ground covered very quickly. That DeLorean is probably similar. Fiesta STs & Hyundai i20Ns are similar weight to the DeLorean but have 200+ BHP - so you wouldn't buy one for ultimate performance. I think that DeLorean looks pretty cool and has obviously been well maintained/cared for. I'd love to try that one and see how I felt about it. Watching Pedestrian heads turn as you drove past shows what 'theatre' it creates on the road. Magic! The only thing I'd have to fix is the creaky clutch pedal/return spring - which would drive (no pun intended..) me nuts. Or was that just the Flux Capacitor engaging? Loved the Doug Demuro impression and very glad it wasn't him..
@RUNDMC13 ай бұрын
Yep the clutch pedal mechanism just needs a squirt of WD40! I’ve got so used to it in the car I don’t even notice it.
@petrolpoodle3 ай бұрын
Oh completely, I totally agree re: it's reputation being valid from its contemporary road tests. I just think it's interesting how *now* they're likely to have been improved simply by restoration with better parts over the 40 years, but we all assume they'll still drive like floppy, sloppy slow ones from the 80s. Love the flux capacitor comment too hahahaha!

Wonderful review. In my experience, and just as you said, most people cast it off based on what they heard. The amount of times people have come up to me and say it’s a shame how slow and heavy it is, and they certainly don’t like me correcting them. The Doug impression was hilarious!

The black plastic centre caps (with DMC logo) are in the wheels, but it might not be obvious in the video! I put the California licence plate in for the static shots as it looks better. You’ll notice the historic UK plate (silver on black) is back in for the driving shots (which matches the front). I’m not running a spare wheel at all - car didn’t come with one! So I just keep some tyre sealant on hand. The wheel well is very handy for tools… :) And yes - running the B28E ignition distributor advanced as far as possible (about 13 deg BTDC - normally would be 10, different from B28F unit). Means the pick up is super peppy (which Jimmy refers to in the video) but also means I have to use the highest octane! (99 here in the UK, equivalent to 95 in the states).

Finally a review of the DeLorean as an actual classic car and not a movie prop joke! The movie is certainly a major part of the DeLorean's identity now, but there is soo much more to appreciate about it. And yeah, late '70s/early '80s cars in general were a bit shit from a performance and quality perspective. But styling/design was pretty awesome! Anyway... It doesn't take all that much to address most of the issues the DeLorean suffered from and which led to its generally poor reputation, relatively speaking. And now that they're beginning to be worth some proper money, it's becoming more justifiable to invest in restoration and/or mild improvements like this one has had. It's great to see a DeLorean review with a properly sorted DeLorean 👍👍

The Lotus Esprit's American cousin. As mentioned in the video, the DMC-12 has a chassis based on the Esprit. The main difference is that the front is a Y shape that is the location for the fuel tank on the DeLorean, unlike the Esprit that has twin tanks either side of the front of the engine at the rear. The DMC-12 was developed at Hethel. The original concept was for a car with a composite chassis, but it was found that that wasn't going to work, so the car ended up with a backbone chassis derived from the Esprit.
