In NZ we call this a "bush drive". Whole faces were felled this way in the early days. Quicker & safer than one at a time with axes & cross cut saws. Unsure why he left so much stump. Seems like a waste. Cool video, thanks.

I was an owner operater for 43 years in the ne,if he left a four foot i would have fired him.lots of bdft lost on the but end.foresters i worked for would measure height of stump,could not be over Four inches in height,especially in hardwood.Trimmed the bell after.

​@@scottbrown71260 I only logged for a few years, but it's my understanding that loggers in the Rockies and Western US traditionally left more stump than elsewhere because they were dropping really large trees in a specified direction, often on a slope exceeding 45 degrees, and using overhead cable logging to haul them up to the landing. In the flatlands of the Southeastern US, our grandpappy's used mules, steam winches, and tractors to haul out relatively smaller diameter trees, so they cut as close to the ground as practical. Traditions persist.

Fuck Osha ..if he was the owner he can do what he wants just like Me im a independent contractor with no other workers now im not saying to be a idiot or break rules that actually are there for a reason but if you follow every osha rules in the woods you put yourself into danger sometimes . Iv had to set up situations like a this not as long but loggers use trees to knock over other trees everyday its way safer your out of the danger zone an you a walk it over

Its was probably 7 or 8 yrs ago, but my cuttin partner and I sawed for 2 and a half hours one time, and finally got one to go, (had to beat er), we started running out of trees, lol, but I had a video at one time of it but I lost it.... it was one of the longest loudest drives I've ever seen..... the shovel operator had to watch cuz we were sawing, but nothing was going down.... loads and loads hit the dirt, it was awesome.....
