An incredible interesting life! He deserves a series of his own, but a historical one telling us the real life of the Vikings, how they interacted and commerced through the lands of Ukraine and their important role in Constantinople, the war against the Saracens in the Mediterranean, the Crusaders, the alliance between the Bizantine Empire with the Normans in Sicily and their feud, etc. Some series to educate us in an entertaining way, to leave a footprint in the history of television. Hardrada was a ruthless man in a ruthless time.

The 'Hard-ruler', 'Thunderbolt of the North', 'Bulgar Burner' was true warrior-king. He was nearly unstoppable and if he would not have been caught off guard at Stamford Bridge, could have installed his bloodline as rulers of the North Sea Empire and changed history forever. In the story about Olaf, Harald and his brothers, the first said they would want great corn fields. How is this possible when corn wasn't introduced to Europe until around 1500 when Harald was alive almost 500 years earlier? Maybe I either missed something or misunderstood what was said.

the norse "viking" influence on the British islands did not really end until after the truce between Scotland and Norway in 1266. And before this Magnus Barelegs, who was Harald's grandchild, had all of the islands in the Irish sea, including, The Hebrides, the Isle of Mon and the Isle of Man under his control - and also the kingdom of Dublin. In 1103 he was killed in an ambush in Downpatrick by his son's father in law.

It's the easiest and least expensive way to have the poor fight to increase the wealth and lands of the elite. Once Constantine succeeded using this tactic the scale changed everything going forward. Ultimately it never is about religion but rather resources, power and legacy. Devolving into groups killing each other over the way in which they choose to worship the same God. It becomes rather ridiculous when you think about it. The problem isn't religion but rather mankind itself.

Religion is really only a pretty superficial aspect of all these conflicts - of course it mattered but I like to look western Europe in the early and high middle ages when the population was 100% Catholic and there was just as much bloodshed if not more between the different Catholic European polities -they fought over trade, land, resources and demarcation lines and also over which dynasties should rule. I have studied Italian medieval history in some depth and it was constant warfare between neighboring cities -all the same religion -and it was all about control of land, trade and resources. I'm talking about cities a few kilometers from each other like Florence and Siena, Venice and Milan not to mention Pisa and Genoa. It was the same everywhere else as in Germany and the Netherlands. Go to the Islamic world and things are exactly the same -different Islamic dynasties all vying for control and fighting each other -the Ummayads fighting the Abbasids etc etc etc

@@vonderloo3184 This extract is from Harald Hardrada’s Saga, written in about 1220 by the Icelandic historian and poet Snorri Sturluson. Three brothers - Guttorm, Halfdan and Harald - were playing in a puddle with model boats. King Olaf and the boys’ mother sat watching. King Olaf called Guttorm and Halfdan to him, and he asked Guttorm: ‘What do you want most?’ Guttorm said: ‘A cornfield! The whole field over there, jutting out into the lake.’ ‘There would be a lot of corn there!’ said the king. Then the king asked Halfdan: ‘And what would you most like to have?’ He said: ‘Cows! So many, that when they go down to drink, they’ll stand all round the lake, side by side.’ ‘That would be a very big farm,’ said the king. Then the king said to Harald: ‘And what do you want most of all?’ ‘Soldiers!’ said Harald. ‘So many that they will eat all Halfdan’s cows at one meal!’ The king laughed and said: ‘You are bringing up a king here, mother!’ .

Vikings Valhalla is so bad. Not even close to being historically accurate. Almost as bad as Ivar dying in vitserks arms crying as battle surrounds them people fighting for their lives Alfred says “ stop fighting “ and everyone as far as the eye can see all stop immediately!? Dumbest ending to an epic show!? But even that wasn’t as bad as season 3 or Valhalla
@historyprofiles
@historyprofiles 4 ай бұрын
Both the Vikings shows changed history a lot. Yeah the way ivar died wasn’t good considering he died in Ireland, ubba died in England and never went to Vinland, but hvitserk did become the king of York but I didn’t like his addict arc. Valhalla did alot wrong too, and was arguably worse as the sons of Ragnar are based on legend with their tales being almost mythical, so the writers had a lot to play around with, but the Jomsvikings they completely ruined it so many historical in accuracies, women wenrnt even allowed in their castle and they were a Viking mercenary order. Edmund Ironside who in real life was an epic warrior king, one of the greatest according to the Anglo Saxon chronicle, you don’t get the nickname Ironside unless your one of the greatest warriors ever seen. @@TOliver-kf4jx of course it’s embellished, most of the information is taken from sagas and songs. Try and find 100% accurate tales from 1000 years ago, oh wait there all tales and stories

No he was not. Far from it. Sven Forkbeard and his son Cnut The Great was far better. Cnut was king of England, Norway and Denmark. Harald Hardrada aint shit my dude

@@DANEonDOPE you don’t think I know that? I did a one hour video on Canute. Lol it’s perspective if you think that great. Other people think harald the man than saw all of the world with his own eyes, was in way more battles than Canute and arguably Sweyn, not inheriting his position but taking it. Canute turned down single combat with Edmund, he didn’t want it….. could argue this pointless argument all day it’s subjective, but the king of England Denmark and Norway dosnt make you the greatest simply the most powerful.
